Christmas is celebrated every year on 25th December. It is mainly the festival of Christians. But in today’s time, the festival of Christmas has surpassed the religious boundaries and become a symbol of the holistic culture. The winters in December carry a festive feeling.

When was Jesus Christ Born?
Today, we celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December every year. However, nobody knows the exact date when Jesus was born. No historical evidence exists nor was it explicitly mentioned in the Bible. So, how did people come about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ on the 25th of December?
Christmas Date and Its Origin
Many believe that the birth of Christ did not happen on Year 1, but somewhere between 2 BC and 7 BC. The first-ever recorded evidence of Christmas celebrations can be traced all the way to 336 AD, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Constantine was the very first Roman Emperor to adopt Christianity, and hence, celebrated the birth of Christ on December 25th. However, there are more theories that explain why we celebrate Christmas on 25th.
An ancient Christian tradition marked March 25th as the day when Mary was told that she would give birth to a very special baby, this event was called the Annunciation in Christian literature. Nine months after March 25th was December 25th, which is when Jesus would have been born.
How “Old Christmas” is Celebrated?
Today, the world follows the Gregorian Calendar, which was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Prior to this, the Roman Calendar was used. However, the Roman calendar had more days in a year than the Gregorian Calendar. Hence, when the world switched to the Gregorian Calendar, almost 10 days were lost. Hence, the day that followed October 4th, 1582 was October 15th, 1582. Similarly, when the UK adopted the Gregorian Calendar in 1752, the day that followed September 2nd, 1752, the day which followed was September 14th, 1752.
Some Orthodox Churches still use the Roman Calendar, hence, they would celebrate Christmas on January 6th, which is where December 25th would have been on the Gregorian Calendar. In some parts of the world, January 6th is called Old Christmas, due to the fact that this would have been the day Christmas would have been celebrated if the calendar switch was never made.

As Christmas arrives, instead of just opening presents, my family celebrates it by throwing a fun and exciting party. The events we plan are way to thrilling than any ordinary Christmas celebration because it’s our family’s tradition. For example, each year we make American style food and Vietnamese food, open presents under the Christmas tree, eat at the dining table, and sing! Most of my family members could not control their excitement and have broken one of the family’s traditions of opening presents by age.
While we do celebrate Christmas like any other family does, we tend to celebrate it differently each year to change it up.
Opening presents under the Christmas tree first, helps organize everything from causing chaos. Most of the time it’s our last event because it’s worth the wait, but most of us can’t help and take a peek at ours first. My family open presents uniquely different than other families because we wait for our turns.

Our family has a tradition of opening of opening presents from youngest to oldest. We have been following this tradition for as long as I can remember. While, waiting, it’s hard for me to watch because I get extremely impatient, I’m always at the couch watching TV.
Next, we heard over to the mall Christmas tree and take a Chinese red envelope filled with money. The envelope contains bills that vary from $1,$5,$10,$20 and $50. This is the most exciting part after opening presents because who wouldn’t want to test out their luck? I have the worst luck when it comes to picking an envelope off the tree.

Every year, I always get $1 bills or $5 bills! This changed last year, when I hit the jackpot and won $50! Overall everyone not only receive presents, but goes home with money in their pockets. After opening presents and selecting our red envelopes off the tree, we take family pictures.
The first picture is always serious because it has to be perfect. My cousin Michael, and I try our best to hold in our laugher, but we never successfully do. If the first shot isn’t perfect or if we joke around, then we all have to stand there until a perfect picture has been taken. After that we change into our Christmas sweaters and take silly photos. Nobody ever wants to see just serious Christmas photos in the family scrapbook! We take silly pictures to make it a fun and funny experience. Next we head over to the dining table to eat as much food as our hearts desire!
Last, we brace ourselves again, for the serious karaoke competition! This is my favorite part of the day because it’s always funny to watch people mess up the lyrics. Each year, the competition gets more and more competitive; people take it way too seriously! My aunt thinks she is better than everyone else, but to our ears, that isn’t true. My aunts and uncles always fight over to see whose turn it is to go next because they love to have fun and show off their skills. When it’s my turn to sing, I remain calm and try my best to get a good score. Singing in chorus in high school for two years really pays off!
Anyway, we all compare our scores at the end of the competition to see who wins a gift card to any store of their choice. The thing is, not everyone goes home empty – handed. Everyone wins a gift card too, but those don’t hold as much money as the grand prize. My family’s Christmas celebrations are the best! It’s great to see everyone having fun for once, rather than arguing about problems! I love the aura that everyone gives off with the smiles and laughter in the atmosphere! It’s the only time of the year where everyone can relax without causing any uproar. Overall, my Christmas celebrations are fun moments that I look forward to each year.

Margaret Laurence does an exceptional job with her diction throughout her writing she uses very complex words and lots of descriptions to give the reader a better feel and understanding of what's going on. After reading her piece "Where the World Began" I wanted to incorporate some literary devices into my own writing because I realized using literary devices in writing makes your writing much more interesting to the reader and also gives it a better standard, however sometimes it can be extremely difficult to include these devices in your writing so you have to figure out a balance between using the right amount of literary devices and in the appropriate places in order to make an emphasis to your writing and to give the reader a better understanding as well. Also sometimes using literary devices can make it easier for the reader to connect with the author or the story so they feel as if the writing is more applicable to them. The things which I chose to mimic from Margaret Laurence include diction, metaphor, setting, imagery, allusion, sentence variety and hyperbole. Diction was mimicked throughout the whole piece by using complex words in order to give the reader a deeper understanding of the context. In the beginning, of the third paragraph diction is used to give a very detailed understanding of the cold winter. Next literary device I mimicked was the metaphor, this was used on multiple occasions one of them being where the snowball is compared to a grenade. The setting in her piece is the same prairie setting as my essay so some of her settings were used to make a connection. Imagery is used throughout the essay again on multiple occasions Margaret did this through using really descriptive words so the reader can imagine the surrounding I included this in my writing where I described the day in

The history of Christmas is dated to be very old. Records have shown that it was celebrated as early as 1700 years ago. People celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ as they believe that Jesus is the son of god the Messiah sent from heaven to save the world from sin. People get a small vacation for the Christmas celebrations. Christmas is a festival that requires a lot of preparation too and involves a lot of activities. People shop for Christmas decorations, foods and gifts for family and friends, and Christmas themed outfits. Shopping malls or shops are seen busy with people shopping for Christmas. People share the best Christmas wishes with friends, family, and relatives. The main event of Christmas is the Christmas trees. Christmas is also celebrated in public places such as Churches, Schools, Shops, etc. The Radios all over play Christmas songs, Christmas trees are found decorated in Public places and people come together and mingle around. Christmas reminds us of the importance of giving and sharing with friends and family. It is the essence of this festival that unites people together.
