Choosing a course is really a hard decision to make. Your future depends on it and the decision you will make would determine what life you will have in the future. This is the first step in your life as an independent person and this is the first step for your success.

At the present day, the educational system of upper secondary school resembles major parts of the already established system. The system compels students to study subjects considered important by the government. I highly disagree with the current school-system because of several reasons. I support the vision of students having themselves to choose their own courses.

First of all, I believe the working climate in general will be remarkably better as a result of the fact that the students most likely choose subjects they are really interested in. Thanks to that, the students will be more active and focused during lectures. They will work harder and be more prone to do their homework.They will study adequately and they will acquire knowledge more easily and knowledge will persist longer. Furthermore, when the students learn to appreciate studying, they will put more effort into studies which will result in preferable possibilities of achieving favored marks, which is satisfactory toward the students likewise their teachers. With own experience on hand, if a student is constrained to study plenty of subjects, which he or she is not even interested in, it will just make him/her feel tired and stressed. In many cases this leads to avoiding certain courses the students have no interest in, sometimes even giving up on school.

Secondly, since it is only the students who know what they are really good at, it seems fair that they should be given more freedom to choose their own courses. In fact it is very important for the students to choose their own subjects without reserve because they are the only ones who know what they are interested in, what they prefer and what they need. That is the main reason why they will pay more attention to the subjects which they are concerned about, they will work more by themselves and search for necessary information that relates to the course and potential future job.

On the other hand, I understand that some people believe schools should push the students to study for all-round development. The students can discover their interest through different subjects and also realise their full capabilities in areas they would never even come to think of. Of course, there would still be some negative side-effects of selecting courses freely, like in cases when teachers are known to give good grades for less challenging courses. On the contrary, there is always a different side and I find it essential for the school to guide the students among the most fundamental subjects.

In conclusion, I find it important that students in upper secondary school should have the opportunity to choose their own courses. The students are sufficiently mature to know what is best for themselves, if they obtain a limited assistance with selecting subjects and planning, they will have only good in return. Teachers should of course be strict and put some pressure on the students so they eventually start studying when they are supposed to. Obviously it is important to be all-round tutored for the future but I would say that it is better to concern about things that is going to be really useful in the future instead of learning about useless subjects. The question is: Would it not be better if all students in upper secondary school and above had the complete freedom to choose their own subjects?

The most basic consideration in the choice of a college major or college course is, of course, what you want. Is there something that you’ve always wanted to get into, something that resonates within the very fiber of your being? If so, that may be where you’re meant to go. The more interested you are in a subject, the more likely you are to study it and achieve a strong result. This is particularly important at college when you are responsible for your own study. List the fields of study that interest you, and come up with a list of courses you would consider studying based on these interests.

Add the topics that you were most interested in during school as well as jobs that you envied others for. At some point, many students try to fit in a course or two based purely on personal interest. While their majors may reflect their primary interest, most people are interested in more than one intellectual pursuit, so a biology major who has a passion for movies might take a film course. This is not necessarily what are you good at, but what do you love doing? You might be great at math, but you spend your weekends fixing up bits of old computers. So don’t study math, focus on IT or computer engineering instead. Specialize in your passion.

Final Reflective Essay

At the beginning of the course, I was new to college writing. My writing skills were not bad, but they needed some fine tuning. A lot of the skills I have translated over easily from high school, but some did not. I was always good at getting information and laying down a foundation. Alongside that, I’ve always found writing easy once I have that base. Filling out the main ideas were simple. However, once I arrived in college it was apparent to myself that I needed more detail, and that it was something I lacked. It needed improving, but it was not a hard fix. Sometimes it is hard for me to understand why some writing needs more detail but others do not. This class has helped me fix that issue a bit, while also strengthening my proficiency in other areas. Throughout the semester, I have completed assignments that have increased my skills, and broadened my sense as a writer in different areas. By taking this class, I have been able to develop rhetorical knowledge, develop critical thinking, reading, and information literacy, develop effective strategies for drafting texts, and develop knowledge of conventions.

This class has helped me develop rhetorical knowledge by analyzing and composing multiple forms of writing to understand how genre conventions shape readers’ and writers’ practices and purposes. This means that I have been able to analyze different types of writing in order to understand how a genre affects how an author writes, and how the reader reads. One assignment that comes to mind that helped me achieve this outcome was our advertisement analysis assignments. In class, we spent time looking at different advertisements, and how they appealed to certain audiences. We all had to bring an advertisement to class, and analyze it ourselves, pointing out what techniques the ads were using, if they were effective or not, and who were they targeting. This assignment helps develop rhetoric as it allowed me to understand how the category of advertisement writing can differ from not only other genres, but other ads as well.

Rhetoric knowledge was also developed by practicing purposeful shifts in structure, content, diction, tone, formality, design, and/or medium in accordance with the rhetorical situation, which means to be able to change your writing to reflect the rhetorical situation at hand. This was not the result of one assignment, but many. During the course we were asked to write different essays that reflected different styles of writing. From storytelling and analyzation, to infographics and research assignments, I have been able to change how I write in order to meet the requirements. For example, in the literacy narrative, I had to write to convey a story. This means using traditional elements of a story, such as a beginning, middle, climax, and resolution, along with elements such as foreshadowing. This style of writing is different from an image analysis essay, where the purpose is mostly informative rather than anecdotal. In this case, elements such as facts, context, and comparison are common, and story like elements would not be appropriate here. I display that I have met this outcome by understanding how to write in those genres and how to keep it appropriate.

Another outcome this class has helped me meet is developing critical thinking, reading, and information literacy by composing and reading for inquiry, learning, critical thinking, and communicating. One such way I have met this outcome is by writing journals almost every class about different things. Every so often we had to write a journal about our thoughts about either our writing skills, how we defined different terms, and our reflections on our assignments. By completing these journals, I was able to look back on certain assignments, and learn how I was able to accomplish what I did. This style of writing is helpful because of its creative nature, and allows myself to become better as a writer.

Two more ways I was able to develop my critical thinking, reading, and information literacy skills was by using outside materials in their own writing through techniques such as interpretation, synthesis, response, critique, and design/redesign, and incorporating outside materials through quotations, paraphrase, and summary. By completing the image analysis essay, I was able to meet the outcome about using outside materials in your own writing. I used two advertisements in the essay, and analyzed how they were done, and who they targeted, in order to compare and contrast them at the end. I appropriately commented on their effectiveness, and how they could have improved. Speaking of using outside materials, my research essay demonstrated the outcome related to using paraphrase due to the nature of the assignment. By using outside sources, I was able to make my argument stronger, and I was able to improve as a writer because my skill to read and take information away improved.

The third outcome this class helped me to achieve was to develop effective strategies for drafting texts by working through multiple drafts of a project and recognizing the role of reflecting, revising, and editing in the process, engaging in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes, such as learning to give and to act on productive feedback to works in progress, both by and with peers and in one-on-one instructor conferences, and critically reflecting on how they may further develop and apply writing skills in the future. The first outcome was reached simply through the rough drafts of each project. I usually had to brainstorm first, but afterwards, I was able to just write in order to get the information down. It had quite a few flaws to begin with, but during editing, most of them were ironed out easily. The second outcome was achieved through peer review. This was something I had always struggled with because I did not know how to do it. After learning, I saw how important it was. It allowed me to see mistakes my brain would have never saw, and let me see what my most common mistake were, which then allowed me to know what to avoid when writing. By reviewing other’s works, I was able to see common writing errors in general, and thus gave me information about what to avoid. The last outcome was achieved through peer review reflection. This is self-explanatory, but being able to reflect on the advice given is helpful. Mostly because it allows you to take a step back, and go over everything. You can see what you did well, and what you need to avoid in the future. This way, in future endeavors, the same mistakes will hopefully not be made.

The last outcome this class helped me to achieve was to develop knowledge of conventions by demonstrating competence in grammar, punctuation, and spelling, practicing genre conventions for structure, paragraphing, tone and mechanics, and understanding the concepts of intellectual property that motivate documentation conventions through application of recognized citation styles. The first two outcomes are rather similar, in the regard that most of the assignments help reach this outcome. Grammar will never change in writing, so it is important to get it write initially. The only assignment that really tested this was peer review. Being able to recognize sentences that do not make sense is helpful, and will help a writer catch confusing or contradicting statements. As for practicing genre conventions, almost every project helped display that. Writing paragraphs and formatting them correctly is easy, so there is not reason to drag on about this point. Lastly, the assignment that helped reach the outcome about citing intellectual property was the research assignment. It is important to cite your sources so that you do not plagiarize someone’s work, and jeopardize your own academic career. The research assignment helped because you had to find sources for you argument, and as a result, citations would follow.

During the course, I was faced with a few assignments where I had to write day by day, and not just in one day. Writing is not something to do, but rather a process that you have to follow in order to succeed. Many of the different assignments helped improve my skills in rhetoric, critical thinking, drafting, and conventions. While some did not improve much, others did exponentially. The work is not perfect, but for a beginner in college, it shows that I am willing to put in the time and effort to become more than just a beginner. As I progress through school, I hope to not only maintain these skills, but improve them also. Writing is not something that you leave behind after leaving school, so it is important that I take these skills not only with me for the next four years, but for the rest of my life. If I succeed in doing that, then I will always be prepared for any assignment that my field of interest throws at me.

People of all sorts from teenagers to adults are still trying to find themselves today. They don’t exactly know whom they are, what they want to do with their lives or what they were meant to do. It is important that when the opportunity presents itself, you take advantage of it and start exploring the possibilities and discover what is out there for you. The majority of the time your college years are the first steps in choosing a major and career path that will carry you on for the rest of your life. My name is Peter LoDuca and I am a freshman attending Gallaudet University. Born and raised on Long Island, I am a hearing impaired student – athlete that attended the Village School in Great Neck, NY. Growing up as a hard of hearing student and mainstreamed into public school I always had difficulties hearing and capturing what was going on in class. However, I maintained a high academic average throughout my years in middle and high school, but I was never able to really enjoy my time at school because of the struggle that I had to endure everyday. As I began to start thinking about my future I questioned myself and tried to figure out how I was going to set a plan that would work out and be the best for me. Once I heard about Gallaudet University, I knew better things were going to be coming my way. After visiting the campus, touring and sitting in on some classes I decided at that very moment, the university was the place for me. Ever since I was a young child, I always relied on my visual rather than on my hearing. If anybody asked me what kind of learner I would consider myself, it would be visual. In matter of fact, according to the VAK Learning Styles website, the survey I took classified me as a visual learner. The website talks about how visual learners absorb information and the way they think amongst themselves. Visual learners rely on diagrams, charts, instructional videos and pictures to gain knowledge on different kind of subjects. Here at Gallaudet, the whole campus including faculty members, staff, teachers and students rely on sign language to communicate with each other and learn. My academic as well as my social life was the perfect fit for this school, which would allow me to do the things I do by minimizing the stress. Another reference that assessed my skills and classified me into specific groups was the MBTI. The survey asked questions based on learning skills, preferences and our comfort zones. After the completing the survey, I was classified as an extrovert, sensing, thinking and perceiving student. These different learning styles are a part of who I am and how I go about doing things. My learning styles allow me to create goals, meet my standards and to strive to continue raising my own bar. At the age of 5 years old, I already knew what I wanted to become and do for a living once I got older. I wanted to be a professional baseball player. Every night I would dream the life of a big league ball player, how much fun the game is and the luxury of being able to play the game for a living. Growing up as a kid I always admired and looked up to Derek Jeter as a role model. He sets an example for his team, on and off the field. Jeter is a leader in the business industry and supports himself with income from different sources besides baseball. The way he has established himself as a baseball player and a man is indescribable. There was a point in my life though, where I realized that you couldn’t play the game forever. Eventually a playing career comes to an end as your body starts to age. I gave myself a reality check and started to prepare a back up plan. Besides baseball, my passion is politics and government. This means, many college students will excel I their studies. Thy will put a lot of effort in their studies and get best results because, they are comfortable with the course. Students need a chance to choose what courses to take, and as the result, they will get better marks, which is satisfactory both for them as well as for their teachers. Students know what they are good at, so they should be given an opportunity to do what they are good. This can only be done by allowing them to choose courses they are good at, and are interested in. Essentially, it is vital that college students should be allowed to choose their courses because; only they know what they are interested in and what they need. Majority of students pay more attention to the subjects they are interested in and this is the reason why, when joining college, they will want to pursue a course in the subjects.

So you’re telling me you didn’t cure cancer or go through a seriously traumatic event? Neither did I, and I got into every school I applied to! Real talk: Your achievements and challenges do not define you. Everyone has a story to tell, no matter how big or how small. Sometimes, the most meaningful essays come from the smallest moments. You could make your whole essay about a trip to the grocery store! (And yes, someone has successfully done that.)

When you engage in deep self-reflection and use the right strategy, you can turn any story into a compelling college essay., sorry to break it to you, but while gpa can get you in the door, it won’t set you apart . there will be students with the same scores & activities as you... but no one has your story. most colleges in the u.s. use a process called “ holistic review ”. they take several factors into consideration to gain a full picture of who you are. we’re talking empirical data like gpa, scores, and achievements, but also personal qualities like leadership, intellectual vitality, and emotional intelligence. you are literally given a “personal rating” in admissions (say what) numerous schools across the u.s. (especially the more competitive ones) classify your “ character/personal qualities ” as “ very important ” or “ important ” in their admissions statistics. (trust me, i dug through tons of common data sets to prove it.) and what’s the number 1 driver of your personal rating you guessed it, college essays ., tldr: many students underestimate the importance of the personal rating, but every year it’s becoming increasingly important – especially with test-optional policies..
