Everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable

#InvestInOurPlanet

The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “Invest in Our Planet.” Earth Day 2022 is focused on accelerating solutions to combat our greatest threat, climate change, and to activate everyone – governments, citizens, and businesses – to do their part. Everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable.

Invest in Our Planet is focused on engaging the more than 1 billion people, governments, institutions, and businesses who participate in Earth Day to recognize our collective responsibility and to help accelerate the transition to an equitable, prosperous green economy for all. The goal of EDO’s campaign is to push aside the barriers erected by the ancient, dirty fossil fuel economy and their co-conspirators – old technologies of centuries past – and redirect attention to creating a 21st century economy that brings back the health of our planet, protects our species, and provides opportunities for all. EARTHDAY.ORG’s campaign is focused on reframing the conversation, accelerating action, and bringing us together to understand that this is within our reach if we work together.

Individuals:.

As Individual citizens, – voters, as watchdogs, and as consumers – we have the simple yet effective power to make our voices heard. What each of us does, and how we do it, has a huge ripple effect on our ecosystems, and on the pace of corporate and government action. We are responsible for holding business, governments, and others accountable and to support their efforts when they get it right. How can we do that?

Governments:

National and local government officials can open new doors by incentivizing their citizens, businesses, and institutions to create and innovate. They can create a fair global economic system to implement these innovations and changes without giving up their role to advance and protect the public’s interests in this transition.

Business and Investors:

Like other economic revolutions, inventors, innovators, businesses, and investors are the most likely to drive significant change. It is time for these change agents to step it up. It is also up to us to require that they create value both for themselves and for society as they drive green innovation.

Smart companies are discovering that it is no longer a choice between going green and growing long-term profits — sustainability is the path to prosperity. So for both humanitarian and business reasons, it is imperative that companies of all sizes take action and embrace the benefits of a green economy. Tell business leaders to get on board with a sustainable future or get out of the way.

Unless governments, institutions, businesses, and individuals act now, climate change will continue to deeply damage economies, increase scarcity, drain profits and job prospects, and impact us all.

When it comes to climate change, money talks. Through regulations, incentives, and public/private partnerships, governments can transform and build the green economy. Learn more: [ https://bit.ly/3neB4pN ]

Everything You Need To Know About Earth Day 2022

By Emily Chan

Earth Day environment sustainability climate crisis save the planet Harley Weir

As the climate crisis becomes ever more serious, each Earth Day that comes along takes on extra significance. Established in 1970 in the US, the annual event brings together millions of people from around the world in support of the environment, highlighting the urgent action we need to take to save our planet.

Earth Day 2022 comes after a report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published in August 2021 was described as a “code red for humanity”, with scientists warning that temperatures are set to rise beyond 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels this century (a scenario that would have catastrophic effects worldwide). Meanwhile, there was huge disappointment around the agreement signed at Cop26 in November 2021, showing the magnitude of the challenge we face.

“The origins and history of Earth Day [were] about motivating people to motivate their governments to take action,” Kathleen Rogers, president of Earthday.org , tells Vogue . “Fast forward to 2022 and we have a climate agreement that’s not doing its job and governments back-pedalling on their climate commitments. [Earth Day] is our opportunity to once again put pressure on governments to do something about climate.”

When is Earth Day 2022?

Earth Day takes place on 22 April every year but the entire month of April (sometimes called Earth Month) – and especially the week running up to Earth Day (sometimes called Earth Week) – is a time when environmental issues take centre stage.

What is Earth Day about?

Marked by millions around the world, Earth Day is an annual event designed to shine a light on the serious environmental problems we’re facing, from the climate crisis to air pollution and deforestation.

What is the history of Earth Day?

The first Earth Day was the brainchild of US senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson and took place in 1970 to highlight the importance of clean air and water, following a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California . The event saw an astonishing 20 million people across the US taking to the streets – around 10 per cent of the country’s population at the time.

Earth Day later became an international campaign in 1990, when environmental activists asked one of the original organisers, Denis Hayes , to help create another event to spotlight the ecological challenges facing our planet.

Activists gather on Madison Avenue to celebrate the first Earth Day, New York, 22 April 1970.

What is this year’s theme?

The theme for Earth Day 2022 is Invest In Our Planet – a call for governments, businesses and individuals to invest in a better future for the planet. “Governments can pass regulations, they can promote [a] green economy. We need to invest in innovators and innovation, but we need to do it the right way,” Rogers says. “[For] individuals it’s about investing your personal time, your political vote, investing in your community, investing your money into going green.”

This year, there is also a particular focus on sustainable fashion , with Earthday.org launching a petition calling for change within the industry – as well as legislation to accelerate the action that needs to take place.

What is happening this Earth Day?

There are also thousands of events taking place around the world – find out what’s happening near you via this map , from tree-planting to clean-up activities. Earth Day organisers have suggested a number of ideas for celebrating Earth Day via its handy toolkit , including supporting its campaigns for a global plastics treaty and to stop deforestation .

Meanwhile, Earth Day Initiative held a virtual event on 21 April to mark Earth Day, featuring speakers such as Robert Downey Jr, former Irish president Mary Robinson, and Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org. You can watch it back here .

What else can you do to help the planet?

Of course, at Vogue we believe that every day should be Earth Day, so it’s vital that we continue to take action throughout the whole year. If you want to find out more about the challenges we’re facing, here are the books to read , the documentaries to watch and the activists to follow .

Beyond that, here are some other ways you can live more sustainably , including making more sustainable fashion choices, switching to renewable energy, flying less and eating less meat, fish and dairy. You can also join a local campaign group, write to your politicians and donate to environmental charities such as Greenpeace , 350.org and Rainforest Alliance.

Earth Day will be celebrated by millions in the US, Canada, and around the world on Saturday, April 22, 2023 - marking the 53rd anniversary of the very first Earth Day celebrated in 1970.

Earth Day 2023

The theme for Earth Day 2023 is "INVEST IN OUR PLANET", continuing last year's theme that focused on the effects of climate change on the planet that we all share and what efforts are being made in the real world to mitigate it.

In keeping with the theme, Earth Day 2023 will center on “accelerating solutions to combat our greatest threat, climate change, and to activate everyone — governments, citizens, and businesses — to do their part" announced the organization.

This year, US communities coast-to-coast will mark the day with free events and volunteer opportunities for a full-scale Earth Day Weekend 2023.

Just up ahead, check out other ideas for your own personal projects for observing Earth Day 2023:

Earth Day activity ideas

This year, Earth Day 2023 calls on everyone to divest from  unsustainable investments , and support eco-conscious brands and products to help send a clear message to corporate America that consumers mean business.

While companies are coming to terms with sustainable living, check out other ways to protect the environment at home, on the rooftops, or your own backyard using the concepts of "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle":

• Take a weekend morning to scour the neighborhood for discarded plastics, cans, and bottles for a personal cleanup project that will help the entire community. If you live in a coastal area, this is especially important in helping to protect ocean wildlife.

earth day calls to action

• Perform a household energy audit. Focus on electronic devices like laptops that are left on 24/7 (which accounts for 5-10% of residential energy use per year!) Turn these devices off when not in use and you can save an average $100 on your electric bill annually. Around the house, replace old bulbs with longer-lasting, more energy-efficient ones. • Haven't take the plunge into solar energy just yet? Begin with solar-powered porch or entryway lights you can easily install yourself. For even more energy savings, look for solar-powered motion-sensor lights that are only activated when you approach an entryway.

• In the backyard, choose a good location (away from the growing area) for a compost pile. Start recycling coffee grounds, egg shells, and scraps of food to decompose and to ultimately enrich your garden for the upcoming growing season.

• Enlist the kids to help build a bird feeder for the backyard or patio -- by using a plastic bottle and filling it with bird feed. NOTE: You can also make a nature-made feed bowl out of half an orange peel. Fill it with seed and place on an outdoor table or windowsill.

DID YOU KNOW? Earth Day fun facts

• Exceeding all expectations, 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day observance in 1970. Celebrations effectively stopped traffic in New York City when 20,000 people packed Union Square to see Hollywood actor Paul Newman and hear a speech by New York City Mayor John Lindsay, who arrived on an electric bus.

• John McConnell was the creator of the first Earth Day Flag . His design was inspired when he saw the first picture of the Earth, later dubbed " The Blue Marble ", printed in Life magazine.

• Throughout the 1970's, Earth Day observances eventually led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts .

• Today, Earth Day is the largest secular holiday in the world, with more than 500 million people taking part in 174 countries around the world.

• Google has celebrated Earth day with animated doodles on its home page since 2001.

Quotes for Earth Day

"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." -- Native American Proverb "What is the use of a house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on? -- Henry David Thoreau

"Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them." — Bill Vaughan "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtfully committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." -- Margaret Mead

"Until a man duplicates a blade of grass, Nature can laugh at his so-called scientific knowledge. Remedies from chemicals will never stand in favorable comparison with the products of Nature." -- Thomas Alva Edison

All about Earth Day

The idea behind the Earth Day originated with the early 1960's hippie era. That's when Earth Day bloomed into a grass roots movement that resulted in the first official U.S. observance of Earth Day celebrated in 1970.

Today, many cities extend Earth Day celebrations for an entire week to increase awareness of recycling and better energy efficient communities.

Come April, major cities in the US and Canada honor Earth Day from coast to coast by hosting civic ceremonies and interactive programs to get everyone involved.

Earth Day – April 22, 2023

For the past 50 years, Earth Day has been celebrated by billions of people around the globe, annually every April 22, to join together in promoting awareness for the health of our environment. Why should we continue to celebrate this holiday? Some people may view it as just another holiday, or an excuse to wear green and a flower crown, similar to St. Patrick’s Day, but with serious concerns about our changing environment being studied and addressed today by prominent scientists, politicians, and young climate change activists alike, some people are adapting to more environmentally friendly ways of living — every day, not just on April 22 every year. Cue the composting, recycling, repurposing, carpooling, thrifting, and metal straws to save the turtles.

History of Earth Day

The idea for Earth Day was originally born in 1969, when a US Senator named Gaylord Nelson, witnessed the effects of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA. He called to action all Americans to take a stand for the environment in 1970, and thousands of colleges and universities across the United States organized protests for a healthy, sustainable Earth. This included air pollution from factories and freeways, as well as the loss of habitats for animals and animal extinction. Because of these national rallies, the first Earth Day helped create the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts into law.

Today, we have similar concerns, and unfortunately they are even messier than that original oil spill. Increasing natural disasters, extreme weather, and rising global temperatures may seem impossible for one human, let alone millions or even billions of humans, to slow down, or stop. It has been reported that coral reefs are dying, we see pictures of animals on land and in the ocean with trash in their bellies or around their body, and corporate factories and large companies around the world continue to pollute our air and our living spaces. But a small action, like picking up litter on the sidewalk that may have otherwise ended up around the neck of an animal or in the ocean, still makes an impact — a step in the right direction, and an important change.

Earth Day timeline

20 million Americans protest in the streets for more environmental protections.

200 million people are now organizing and united, fighting for climate protections across 141 countries.

Young people begin to strike for climate change, led by Greta Thunberg in Sweden, with around 2,200 strikes organized in 125 countries from 2018 - 2019.

A “Green New Deal” Resolution is presented to the United States Congress for 100% renewable, zero-emission energy sources.

Earth Day FAQ s

What is the theme for earth day 2020.

The theme highlights a new challenge every year, and the theme for this year is ‘Climate Change’, according to Earth Day Network.

What should I do for Earth Day?

If you’re looking for an event, like a group cleanup project, or climate strike rally to join, visit the global interactive map on Earth Day Networks’ website. There are many things to do to support our planet, and multiple ways to get connected locally to your community on Earth Day.

Should I wear green on Earth Day?

Though supporting the holiday through apparel is encouraged in order to promote awareness, the most important thing is not what you wear on this day, but what you do.

Earth Day Activities

Reduce your carbon footprint.

Get creative with new ways to switch up your commute, or a part of your daily routine. Instead of driving to your destination, carpool with friends, take public transportation, walk, skate, scooter, or ride a bike. Depending on the weather, you may enjoy this new form of travel even more than sitting in traffic.

Reuse, and recycle your wardrobe

Though it may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, your closet and your shopping habits can actually have a negative effect on our environment. By buying thrifted or gently used outfits online, new resources aren’t used to make more clothes that will eventually end up being repurposed, reused, or in a landfill. Some studies have shown that online shopping is better for the environment because it takes about 30% less resources to sell items online. Fire up your Amazon Prime app!

Switch up your diet

Most people may know that food production accounts for one-quarter to one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, and the majority of the blame falls on the meat industry. The BBC recently reported that if the entire world became vegetarian and ate no red meat by 2050, food-related emissions would decrease by about 60%. If the world went vegan instead, emissions would decrease around 70%. It may be time to try out the new ‘Beyond Meat’ burgers.

5 Facts About Earth Day That Will Blow Your Mind

Record high carbon dioxide.

According to the National Geographic society, the carbon dioxide in our atmosphere has never been higher, in part potentially due to nature, and in part due to the advances we as humans have made in industrialization across the globe, since the 1700’s.

Less food waste means less greenhouse gas

Many people may not know this, but the more food we waste and do not consume, the more greenhouse gasses are emitted to transport and biodegrade the waste.

Climate change effects temperatures and weather

According to the U.S. Global Change Research Program, the temperature in the U.S. has increased by 2 degrees in the last 50 years and precipitation has increased by 5%. More extreme weather phenomenons have been occuring in the past 50 years -- Extreme weather in 2019 broke over 120,000 records in the US.

It’s a politically debated topic

Even though 97 percent or more of climate scientists agree that climate change is likely due to human activity (according to the Earth Day Network), and nearly 200 scientific organizations globally have issued statements that agree with this view, it’s still a widely debated topic in 2020.

The top emitter of carbon dioxide

China, with their human population of 1.4 Billion, is currently the top emitter of carbon dioxide, accounting for 30% of global carbon emissions, according to Earth Day Network. However, the United States, with a population around 328 Million, comes in second under China as a top emitter, at 15% of carbon emissions worldwide.

Why We Love Earth Day

Everyone can participate.

The idea behind continuing to celebrate Earth Day, and why we love it, is because it is based on people working together in unity to achieve a better future for everyone. Connecting with people around the world is important to continue to appreciate and respect people from different countries, and other differences in opinion. No one is left out or left behind, everyone can do something small to make an impact on our planet.

Small acts matter

You don’t have to plant a forest to enjoy Earth Day. Even if you feel like reusing your metal water bottle instead of buying a plastic bottle or a styrofoam coffee cup doesn’t make much of a difference, your small acts can change and improve the world we live in. Now that you have awareness that climate change is affecting all of us, do your part to make positive changes wherever you go, no matter how small, they are significant, and this is your chance to improve our world.

We only have one Earth

Earth Day serves as a conscious reminder of how fragile our ecosystem can be, and how our actions can have positive or negative consequences on the world we live in. This holiday serves to ground us in what we need to do to protect our home, and what we can do now, in light of all the damage we have already done to our world. Not everyone has to go out in the streets and protest, but we all need to be reminded to stay in the right mindset -- Not to live in constant fear of the world burning down and flooding, but not to live in ignorance, either.

What is Earth Day? Everything to know about the holiday, its history and this year's theme

earth day topic 2022

Friday marks Earth's very own holiday, and this year's theme is "Invest In Our Planet."

Kathleen Rogers, president of Earth Day's global organizer  EarthDay.org , wants this year's message to give people around the world hope.

"I think people can't operate in fear... So we looked for messaging [that] might inspire people to look to the future in a way that engages them and allows them to think positively about what they could do to change it," Rogers told USA TODAY, adding that "Invest In Our Planet" brings three parties to the table: government, businesses and citizens. "We all need to work together."

Here's what you should know about Earth Day and how to take action for our planet in 2022.

Pollution impact: US air quality remains 'very unhealthy' and 'hazardous' for millions of Americans, new report says

Where your recycling actually goes – and what you can do about it this Earth Day

Is Earth Day a holiday? Why do we celebrate it?

Earth Day, which falls on April 22 every year, is the most widely observed secular holiday around the globe. It's not recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, but Americans across the country have observed it for 52 years.

While EarthDay.org underlines that we should invest in our planet every day of the year, Earth Day is seen as a prominent day of action. More than 1 billion people worldwide mark the holiday by working to both instigate climate policy change and shift everyday human behavior for the betterment of our world.

When did Earth Day start?

The history of Earth Day dates back to 1970. U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson joined forces with Sen. Pete McCloskey and environmental advocate Denis Hayes, then a young activist, to organize teach-ins at college campuses and promote events nationwide.

According to EarthDay.org , the group chose April 22 in hopes of maximizing student participation since it was a weekday falling between spring break and final exams. The first "Earth Day inspired more than 20 million Americans to demonstrate against the harmful impacts of industrial development on both the planet and human health, including thousands of university protests and city rallies from coast-to-coast.

By the end of 1970, Earth Day's momentum led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of multiple environmental laws, such as the National Environmental Education Act and the Clean Air Act.

Earth Day became a global event in 1990 – with 200 million people in 141 countries coming together to spotlight environmental issues internationally. Observance has grown since.

What's different about Earth Day 2022?

Amid the growing climate crisis, environmental advocacy and action are critical, further underlining the need to "Invest In Our Planet."

Earlier this month, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published a report warning of the dangers of rising global warming levels – noting that limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius could be "beyond reach" if significant emission reductions across all sectors are not taken immediately.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said the IPCC report showed "a litany of broken climate promises” by governments and corporations worldwide. “It is a file of shame, cataloging the empty pledges that put us firmly on track toward an unlivable world,” Guterres said.

In the 2015 Paris accord, governments agreed to keep global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius. Temperatures have increased by more than 1.1 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times.

More: Microplastics have been found in air, water, food and now ... human blood

What do people do for Earth Day?

As a day of action, people observe Earth Day in various different ways.

In the U.S., rallies and protests are expected this weekend from Chicago  to Oklahoma City . Along with its partners, EarthDay.org will present a livestream of the Earth Day Climate Action Summit on Friday . Nonprofits nationwide are also organizing volunteer community cleanups, local "fun runs" and more.

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 that celebrates the planet Earth and raises public awareness about environmental issues. The day is observed worldwide with rallies, conferences, school projects and other activities.

Sen. Gaylord Nelson started Earth Day in 1970. The event helped increase public support for the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to address environmental issues. Earth Day has since contributed to the passage of many environmental laws in the U.S.

Earth Day reminds people to think about humanity's values, the threats the planet faces and ways to help protect the environment, Susan Clayton, a professor of psychology and environmental studies at The College of Wooster in Ohio, previously told Live Science.

"Thinking about the history of environmental activism and the way individuals have worked together to change policy can make us more optimistic about the ability to make positive changes in the future," Clayton said.

When is Earth Day 2022?

Earth Day 2022 will take place on Friday, April 22. It will be the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day and marked by various events around the world.

According to EARTHDAY.ORG (opens in new tab) , a nonprofit that coordinates these events, the theme of Earth Day 2022 is "Invest In Our Planet." This theme is meant to encourage businesses, governments and citizens to act now on climate change and other issues for a sustainable future.

Despite there having been more than 50 Earth Days, climate change and other environmental issues still threaten the health of the planet. Michael Mann, a distinguished professor of atmospheric science at Penn State and author of "The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back Our Planet" (PublicAffairs, 2021), notes Earth Day is an opportunity to take stock of where we stand in the battle to live sustainably on this planet.

"We are not yet on the path toward stabilizing the warming of our planet below dangerous levels," Mann told Live Science in an email. "Earth Day is an opportunity to have a conversation about what we need to do. Truth be told, every day should be Earth Day. Without a livable planet, we have nothing."

When did Earth Day begin?

Nelson started Earth Day after seeing the environmental damage of an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. Inspired by student anti-Vietnam War protests, he organized a national "teach-in" on college campuses that focused on educating the public about the environment, according to EARTHDAY.ORG (opens in new tab) .

Nelson persuaded Rep. Pete McCloskey of California to be co-chairman and recruited political activist Denis Hayes as national coordinator. With a staff of 85 built by Hayes, they were able to rally 20 million people across the U.S. on April 22, 1970, according to a 2012 blog post on the United Nations Foundation (opens in new tab) website by John Maleri, then associate director of Earth Day.

The team chose April 22, a Wednesday, because they thought a weekday falling between Spring break and students' exam finals would encourage the highest number of students to participate, according to EARTHDAY.ORG. On that day, thousands of colleges and universities held protests against environmental destruction. But it wasn't just students who participated, the event gained national media attention and many people gathered in public areas to talk about the environment and find ways to defend the planet. In total, about 10% of the entire U.S. population participated.

"It was on that day that Americans made it clear that they understood and were deeply concerned over the deterioration of our environment and the mindless dissipation of our resources," Nelson wrote in the EPA Journal (opens in new tab) in 1980.

The annual event grew in size and popularity after 1970. In 1990, Earth Day went global, with 200 million people in 141 countries participating in the event, according to EARTHDAY.ORG.

Why do we celebrate Earth Day?

Earth Day is celebrated to raise public awareness about the environment and mark the annual anniversary of the first Earth Day. Decades later, environmental issues continue. EARTHDAY.ORG notes the fight for a clean environment is becoming more urgent to address environmental issues, especially climate change.

Climate change is caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, which emit heat-trapping carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere that raise global temperatures and disrupt weather patterns. The impacts of climate change around the world include extreme weather events such as massive floods and intense wildfires . In 2021, thousands of scientists warned that ignoring climate change will yield " untold suffering " for humanity.

"We need to fight climate change harder, to keep our planet habitable and flourishing," Jonathan Overpeck, dean of the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan, previously told Live Science in 2020, as Earth Day celebrated its 50th anniversary.

What has been the impact of Earth Day?

The first Earth Day helped put environmental issues on the national agenda in the U.S. The event also inspired various environmental legislation in the 1970s, including the Clean Water Act (1972) and the Toxic Substances Control Act (1976), according to Columbia University's State of the Planet (opens in new tab) news website.

And the impact of Earth Day has gone far beyond the U.S. For example, the United Nations General Assembly formally recognized April 22 as International Mother Earth Day in 2009, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (opens in new tab) . On Earth Day 2016, the United Nations adopted the Paris Climate Agreement (opens in new tab) , which saw nations around the world aim to keep global warming preferably below 1.5 Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) and well below 2 C (3.6 F) compared to pre-industrial levels.

However, despite Earth Day moments such as the Paris Climate Agreement pledges, climate change is far from resolved. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at the Economist Sustainability Summit (opens in new tab) in 2022 that the 1.5-degree goal is on "life support," and with emissions continuing to increase, "we are sleepwalking to climate catastrophe."

How is Earth Day celebrated?

Each year, organizations and individuals engage in Earth Day activities, projects, and campaigns to promote, protect or restore the environment. Earth Day quizzes are one popular activity, and organizations such as NASA (opens in new tab) , Conservation International (opens in new tab) and EARTHDAY.ORG have online quizzes for people to test their environmental knowledge. Children in the U.S. often celebrate by creating Earth Day-themed school projects such as Earth Day crafts and Earth Day drawings.

"There are two simple ways to celebrate Earth Day to make the world a little better," Nathaniel Weston, an associate professor of environmental science at Villanova University in Pennsylvania previously told Live Science. "The first is to promote understanding of important environmental issues so that more people are aware of the critical actions we need to take to protect our environment. The second is to commit yourself to service on or around Earth Day — plant some trees, clean up a stream or help your local community garden."

Addressing climate change requires widespread and dramatic political action. A 2022 report by the UN's latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) found that "rapid, deep and immediate" cuts are needed to global carbon dioxide emissions across every section of society to stop a climate disaster, Live Science previously reported . In other words, individual Earth Day activities like planting a tree or buying "eco-friendly" products will not stop global temperature rises and climate breakdown.

Mann suggests using the day to talk about the climate crisis. Discuss with your friends, family, neighbors, and "anyone else within earshot the need for policy action, and for voting in politicians who will support climate-friendly policies and voting out those who won't," he said.

Earth Day 2022: All you need to know about the history, significance, and theme of the day

This year, the theme of the day is 'invest in our planet' with an aim "to preserve and protect our health, our families, and our livelihoods"..

Earth Day

Every year, Earth Day is observed on April 22 in a bid to raise awareness about environmental issues affecting the planet, such as pollution, deforestation and global warming. As such, on this day, Earthday.org coordinates a wide range of events including millions of people across the globe.

This year, the theme of the day is ‘Invest in Our Planet’ with an aim “to preserve and protect our health, our families, and our livelihoods”. It includes five primary programs – The Great Global Cleanup, Sustainable Fashion , Climate and Environmental Literacy, Canopy Project, Food and Environment, and the Global Earth Challenge.

In 2020 and 2021, the themes were ‘Climate Change’ and ‘Restore our Earth’ respectively.

In 1969, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honour the planet at a UNESCO conference held in San Franciso. This was first observed on March 21, 1970. A month later, United States Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed the idea to hold a nationwide environmental teach-in on April 22, 1970. Along with activist Denis Hayes, Nelson renamed the event ‘ Earth Day ‘, going beyond the idea of a teach-in to include the United States.

It is reported that over 20 million people poured out on the streets on the first Earth Day , making it the largest single-day protest in human history.

While initially the day was observed in the United States alone, Hayes took it international in 1990 and organised events in 141 nations. In 2020, Earth Day was observed by over 100 million as part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations, making it the largest online mass mobilisation in history.

Significance

The day holds great importance as pressing issues like rising pollution and climate change continue to deplete the planet . As such, Earth Day engages people in meaningful conversations concerning the protection of the planet.

Additionally, it also educates people, especially, the young minds about the various climate issues and the actions required to undo the damage.
