This paper reports on the attachment theory and how life experience affects one’s emotional attachment to others. Attachment theory advanced by John Bowlby in the early 1950s, seeks to explain how early life relations affects an individual’s emotional bonding in future Hutchison (89).

The theory gives an understanding of the different personalities as relates to emotional relationships. The theory was first focused on the relationship between children and their parents, but was later expanded to look at the whole lifespan. The theory looks at ones attachment as being influenced by both psychological conditions and the social environment.

The Attachment Theory and Life Experiences
According to the proponents of the attachment theory, children develop a bond with their caregivers, which grow into an emotional bond. Further research on the theory indicates that life experiences in childhood direct the course of one’s personality as well as the social and emotional development throughout his or her life.
Besides the explanation advanced by the theory regarding the connection between a baby and its mother or a care giver, the theory also seeks to explain the attachment between adults Hutchison (43). Among adults, an emotional attachment is felt more especially during bereavement or separation of spouses. Babies are born without the ability to move or feed themselves.
They depend on care givers to for these needs; they however have pre-programmed set of behavior that comes into action due to the environmental stimuli. Environmental stimuli may trigger a sense of fear or distress in the baby making it cry for help from the mother or the care giver. The protection or comfort offered to the baby makes it develop a stronger emotional bond with the mother and others who are closer to it.
Children grow to relate comfort from distress to the people who are close to them during their early stages of development. The nature of the environment a child grows in, together with the “psychological framework builds up a child’s internal working model” Hutchison (52).
The internal working model comprises of the development of expectations that an individual perceives in social interactions. The theory explains the effect of challenging parenting such as; neglect or abuse. Parents and caregivers should endeavor to develop an environment that makes children feel secure and comfortable.
The type of relationship parents establish with their children at their early stages of development determines the type of emotional attachment a child develops with them. A child who grows up in a loving and sensitive environment develops secure relationships in with others.
Such a child grows to recognize others as being caring, loving and reliable. They also develop high self esteem and learn to deal with negative feelings. Research indicates that people who grow up in secure attachment relationships are able to demonstrate good social aptitude throughout their life.
On the contrary, children brought up in unsecure environment develop an avoidant attachment. An unsecure environment to children is often characterized by fear, anxiety and rejection. This type of environment makes a child make children to downplay their emotional feelings.
There is a group of children who grow up with care givers that are not consistent in responding to their emotional needs. Their care givers are sometimes sensitive, and sometimes insensitive to their feelings. Such children develop “an attachment seeking habit as they try to conquer the insensitivity of their caregivers” Hutchison (34).
This sort of behavior by children is referred to as ambivalent attachment, where the children seek to compensate for the inconsistent responsiveness by the caregiver. Such a child tries to manage other people’s attention through behavior sets such as; seduction, bullying rage and necessity.

John Bowlby conceived of four stages of attachment that begin during infancy: preattachment, attachment-in-the-making, clear-cut attachment, and formation of reciprocal relationships. Ainsworth identified three types of attachment that a child could possibly demonstrate: secure, avoidant, and resistant/ambivalent.
John Bowlby established attachment theory in the 1950s and 1960s as an addition to psychoanalytic theory. Attachment theory is a secure base from which to explore close relationships that can accommodate an extensive variability of methods and findings.

Attachment theory explains the dynamics of lasting relationships between humans, particularly as in families and long time friends. The most significant theory is the one that, an infant needs to build up a relationship on one primary caregiver. Attachment goes round through the fields of psychological, evolutionary, and ethological theories. Therefore the infant relies on caregiver who helps him to discover the world. The components of health attachments are safe haven, secure base, and separation distress. Safe haven is whereby when the child is endangered, he or she runs to the caregiver for consolation and comforting. Secure Base is the situation when the care giver provides a safe and reliable base for the child to learn about the environment. There is also Separation Distress; this is where the child becomes unhappy and saddened when separated from the caregiver.
Attachment is an arousing union towards another person. Attachment is described by psychologist John Bowlby, who was the attachment theory pioneer, as a “lasting psychological connectedness between human beings” (Bowlby and Ainsworth, 1969, p. 194). Bowlby supposed that the earliest unions created by children to their caregivers have great impacts that go on throughout one’s life. According to Bowlby, attachment also helps to bring the infant closer to the mother, therefore boosting the child’s survival chances.
According to the experiments, Ainsworth explained three main methods of attachment: secure attachment, ambivalent-insecure attachment, and avoidant-insecure attachment. Since that time some of the studies have agreed with Ainsworth’s attachment methods and have shown that attachment methods have also an impact on later behaviors. Always remember that, children feels more secure when attached to their adult caregivers. Children also believes that, their parent or caregiver will facilitate, comfort, support and would willingly help them when need arises. Attachment is a permanent union that grows up early in a child’s life. Attachment can happen among, mother and child, Dad and child, grandparents and child, and also foster parents can improve a child’s life through attachment. Attachment is supplementary to the emotional union; the health of a child lacking attachment is endangered, as children who experience the love of caregivers have good chances of rising up into adults who are able to sustain long close relationships.
Some parents find it hard to unite with disabled children, mostly when the child offers less response to the parent. However, be certain that, whether the child is able to give you the response you sometimes need or not, they are feeling the love and kindness you are showing to them. Parents and caregivers can assist to promote attachment with their children by showing more love and concern to the baby. The health community has even recognized the improvements made by babies when they are touched by caregivers, for example tempo of the heart is steadier and powerful with the feel, breathing is easier, and in general organs are more productive.

A baby will at first form an attachment to the person who feeds them. Infants learn to associate the feeder (often the mother) with the act or comfort of being fed and thus learn attachment though classical conditioning. Infants also learn that certain behaviours (e.g. smiling or crying) bring about desirable responses from others (e.g. comfort or attention) and thus learn to repeat those behaviours through operant conditioning so as to get what they want (O'Gorman, 2012; Vandevivere, Braet, Bosmans, Mueller & De Raedt, 2014). Evolutionary theory of attachment argues that babies come into the world when they are already pre-programmed biologically to form attachments with others, since these attachments will help them survive. The baby produces in-born behaviours such as smiling or crying that stimulate caregiving responses from adults around them. These behaviours are known as 'social releasers'. The determinant of attachment in this case is not the provision of food but rather care and responsiveness. According to Bowlby the child at first forms one primary attachment known as monotropy and that this particular attachment figure acted as a base through which the children explored the world. The attachment relationship acts as a model for all other future social relationships and hence interfering with or trying to alter it can lead to difficulties for the child. This theory also argues that there exists a critical period for developing an attachment and that is between the age of 0-5 years. If an attachment is not formed by the end of this period, the child will suffer irreversible developmental consequences including increased aggression and reduced intelligence (Vandevivere et al., 2014; McLeod, 2009). The internal working model and information processing The main assumption of the attachment theory is that repeated experiences with various attachment figures are stored in the form of Internal Working Models (IWM) or mental representations. This internalizing process begins early in life and provides the baby with a script or a prototype of how people behave, feel and think in close relationships. Observations during the Strange Situation procedure revealed that there were 3 different attachment categories inferred in infants, 1) secure attachment, 2) insecure-avoidant attachment, 3) insecure-ambivalent attachment (Colmer, Rutherford & Pam, 2011). Later on in the procedure self-reports and interviews were developed to show forms of attachment in older age sets, leading to categories that were comparable to those of infants. Dimensional models were also utilized to categorize forms of attachments. An example of the dimensional models is the one that was formed by Shaver, Brennan and Clark which assumes that individuals vary on the avoidance and anxiety dimension. Attachment anxiety is the extent to which an individual worries that the figure they are attached to will not be adequately available in their times of need. Attachment avoidance shows the degree to which an individual distrusts the availability of their attachment figure and the degree to which they strive to maintain an emotional distance from that figure. These personal differences in the form of attachment show both the internalized expectations from the caregiver and the manner in which information is processed (Colmer et al., 2011; Vandevivere et al., 2014). Attachment theorists have come up with models on the manner in which attachment expectations might already impact the earlier phases of information processing -- the attentional processing of information related to attachment. The hypothesis of defensive exclusion supposes that individuals who are insecurely attached will exclude all information associated with their attachment figure, since this information is linked to psychological pain. Even positive information related to attachment is seen as painful, as it would remind the individual that he or she had little or no positive encounters with their caregiver. This type of selective processing is known as bias, and its function is to help the individual off re-experiencing the past distress. Conversely, persons who are securely attached are thought to openly process all manner of attachment related information, including those that are negative (Bretherton, 1992). This kind of negative information is much less distressing for securely attached individuals compared to the insecurely attached ones. When receiving this information, securely attached persons still trust in the future availability of the attachment figure. Furthermore, if such information returns to them, securely attached individuals, via their prior interactions with their attachment figures, have developed adaptive regulation behaviours or skills to cope independently with the distress. Even though this seems like a well researched theory, the notion that insecurely attached babies suppress and allow some types of attachment related information has not been properly studied (Colmer et al., 2011; Vandevivere et al., 2014). Attachment is when you get a strong reciprocal, emotional bond between two people like with a mother and infant. The attachment acts as a basis for further emotional and psychological development. Following on from the study carried out by Schaffer and Emerson (1964) on the phases of development in attachment, Ainsworth and Bell (1978) investigated individual differences in attachment using the Strange Situation. They hoped that their method of assessing attachments would be a reliable and valid measure of attachments. The Strange Situation test lasted approximately 20 minutes and involved the observation of an American infant (12 to 18 months) in a controlled observation room. The procedure consisted of 7 stressful episodes each lasting 3 minutes, depending on the reaction of the infant. The first episode involved the infant exploring the room in the presence of the caregiver. A stranger then entered the room, followed by the discreet departure of the caregiver. The caregiver would then return, and the reaction of the child would be recorded. The stranger would then leave the room. There was 3 clear groups of infants from the recorded results that were collected. One group greeted the mother on her return, this shows that the child was securely attached. Another group showed distress all around the room and rejected the mother on return, this is called an insecure resistant child. The final type of child found from the results was a child that didn’t orientate the room in which they were in, and they didn’t show any interest in their mothers return. Although Bowen’s family systems theory, and Bowlby’s attachment theory are unique with their own thoughts and perceptions, both of the theories can also be taken as different viewpoints of the same human experience, specifically the development of relationship patterns and human attachment. Both theories touch upon the influence that unsolved problems in the parents may have on their children. Attachment theory focuses more on the infant’s first attachment, or primary attachment. This is usually between the mother and the infant. If the attachment is interrupted and the infant’s needs are not being met by the primary attachment, mother, this could adversely affect the infant’s cognitive and mental development as well as future attachments.
Lifespan Development: Attachment Theory
Bowlby, notably researched a set of abandoned orphans and the negative effect separation from their parents had on them (Bretherton, 1992; Senior, 2013). This led him to conclude attachment formed in these years influenced one from birth to death (Chopik, Edelstein, & Fraley, 2012; Drewery, 2011) For instance, he stated that people with early attachment insecurity, are more susceptible to psychological issues such as high anxiety and riskier health behaviour (Bretherton, 1992; Cooper, et al., 2008). Ainsworth, also believed in prominence on early experiences of attachment. This alludes to her study, the Strange Situation, which focuses on children’s responses to separation and reunion events with their parents (Bretherton, 1992; Main, 2000). She stated that based on the quality of parental care, a child would fall within three categories of attachment. A child whom received sufficient care, would develop secure attachment and, thus, be confident and steady individuals. Yet, a child receiving insufficient care, would either become insecurely anxious-ambivalent, thus, becoming clingy, distrustful and hypervigilant to the world; or alternatively would become insecurely avoidant, being rather dismissive to situations around them (Bretherton, 1992; Main, 2000). Mary Ainsworth (1997), a psychologist, that was a student of Bowlbys (1969), later expanded and tested his idea, whereby she took part in her own empirical study called the strange situation, whereby she proved Bowlbys(1974) attachment theory correct alongside some new concepts of her own, after carrying out her study in America and Uganda on babies from 12-18mths that were separated from their mothers for 3 minutes, based on her findings, she proposed that there was four different types of attachment behaviour that the infant displayed their fore classified four different categories, (expand) secure attachment , anxious -avoidant and anxious ambivalent, and disorganised attachment.
Ainsworth (1974) findings revealed that children that fell into the secure attachment category were raised by sensitive mothers that responded promptly to their child needs, ” “the mothers day in day out responseness had given them faith in her as a protector” (ainsworth1974) p.g 55 concepts and application). mothers that fell into the avoidant category were reported to be inhibited in expressing or showing any comfort or emotions to their children, their fore is seen as not ready and available for the child, mothers that fall in the ambulant category were described as unpredictable and occasionally available, and the child as either passive or angry.as a result of parenting. and finally a mother from the disorganised attachment, main prosed that infant disorganisation is the outcome not only of interaction with parents whose anger and abuse is self evidently frightened (main&hesse 1912)
This theory can help the counsellor to become aware of all the different types of anxieties and disorders that their clients may be facing theory it serves as a map, which offers insights into different types of relationships , effective coping strategies and the underlying dynamics of the persons emotional difficulties , it also helps the counsellor to understand the strategies that many individuals use to get their unmet needs met which sometimes result in them becoming more distressed than before conclusion Symond Freud, John Bowbly and erik Erikson all belonged to the same school of thoughts and studied human growth and development pschology for many years and have all contributed different ideas in regards to child development.
