The tobacco industry is worth billions of dollars in annual profits made from the sale of cigarettes. This industry promotes the smoking of cigarettes by millions of individuals in countries all over the world. While most people enjoy smoking, this habit has many harmful effects that outweigh any perceived merits. Tobacco smoking is the number one cause of preventable deaths in most nations across the globe. The United Press International (2010) reports that, “more than 440,000 U.S. residents die annually from cigarette smoking” (p.1). Smoking not only affects the smoker but also the people around him who are forced to inhale the polluted air. The CDC (2013) reveals that secondhand smokers incur adverse health conditions and even death because of the exposure. In addition to the negative health consequences associated with tobacco use, smoking leads to loss in productivity by an individual costing the economy billions of dollars annually. The CDC (2002) further notes that smoking leads to a loss of money for citizens as they use thousands of dollars each year to sustain their habit. Considering the significant negative impact that smoking has on the society, measures should be taken to address the problem. Policies should be implemented to ensure that people are dissuaded from smoking. If measures are not taken, the deaths and disease burden of smoking-related illness will continue to be prevalent in the society. Even more troubling, more young people will take up this damaging habit. The financial cost of smoking will also continue to be felt by the society.
To solve the problem, I would impose laws that restrict adults from smoking in the presence of children. Specifically, parents would be prevented from smoking at home when their children are present. A report by Wang and Phil (2011) reveals that children who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home are likely to engage in smoking themselves in future. Making smoking in the presence of children illegal would therefore have the desirable effect of preventing most children from taking up smoking in the future. The community should engage in preventative programs to reduce smoking prevalence. Smoking remains to be a major problem due to the significant percentage of new smokers each year. Such programs would especially be effective to the youth who are thinking of picking up smoking. Lovato (2012) states that “teenagers are likely to start smoking due to peer influence while at school” (p.363). With effective preventative programs targeted at such groups, the number of new smokers will remain low ensuring that the problem of smoking is mitigated. The National Cancer Institute (2013) suggests that greater investments should be made in efforts to assist individuals to quit smoking. A large percentage of smokers attempt to quit the habit at some point. Reid et al. (2012) reveal that most of the smokers who are successful in their quitting attempts get some form of assistance from health care providers and community workers. To fund these solutions, the government can increase the taxation on tobacco companies. Such an action will not only provide the necessary finances but also increase the price of cigarettes therefore reducing consumption due to high prices.
One developed nation where the impacts of smoking are felt is Canada. CBPP (2013) reports that in Canada, 16.7% of the population smoke with the daily smokers, who consume an average of 13 cigarette sticks a day, being 13.1%. The highest percentage of smokers were found among the young adults aged between 20 and 24. The Lung Association (2013) documents that approximately 37,000 Canadians die from smoking related conditions annually making tobacco a major killer in the country. In addition to this, the disease increases the risk for various forms of cancer, leukemia, and coronary problems. The CDC (2002) asserts that smoking “produces substantial health-related economic costs to society” (p.1). In recognition of the problems that tobacco causes in the country, The Canadian government has taken steps to reduce smoking in the country. Reid et al. (2012) note that the government has engaged in aggressive campaigns to promote awareness of the adverse effects of smoking. CBC News (2010) reveals that the government has “forced cigarette manufacturers to carry picture-based warnings” (p.1). These efforts have led to a marked decline in revenues for the industry as sales in the country have dropped. In spite of this drop, reports by CBC News (2010) indicate that “nearly one-fifth of Canadians call themselves smokers” (p.1). This indicates that the smoking problem is far from solved in the country. Better solutions will have to be implemented to ensure that the problem of smoking is mitigated and eventually eradicated from the society.

Although tobacco smoking is harmful to one’s health, this has not deterred people from engaging in this habit. In many occasions, smokers never consider the surrounding people before lighting up their cigarette. This is because they are ever after satisfying their desires; hence, rarely considering whether the action will affect their neighbors. One reason why public smoking ought to be banned is because non-smokers are also directly affected due to the harmful substances, such as nicotine as well as carcinogens, which are usually addictive (Rooney & Dicker 14). Through banning the act of public smoking, this will result in a decline in cases of passive smoking, since non-smokers will avoid smoking zones.…

One needs to look past their addiction, and to their life and wellbeing, along with others around them, to live a longer and better life. People will have their own opinion in regards to cigarettes and tobacco products, but Science says otherwise, like how they are deadly and pose many health threats. These people were in hospitals attached to multiple breathing apparatuses or had pieces of their necks missing talking through a metal piece that makes their voice sound distorted. How Smoking Affects The Body
It must hurt to thinking that after the effort made to give their body a good meal and training that they are not considered healthy of the sport, it does not it make sense to demolish everything they have done during the day by smoking a cigarette. Smoking Should Be Banned Essay
Therefore, nowadays wherever people go they find segregated areas for smoking and nonsmoking which somehow solve the problem for second hand smokers. In conclusion, smoking should be banned from public places due to its negative effects on our health and the people around. Smokers should think seriously to stop smoking and that smoking is like suicide slowly. Smokers also should realize that they are role models for the younger generation. Therefore, smokers shouldn’t be selfish and think about themselves only and should look around them and see and there is at least one person who cares about…
Explain Why Smoking Should Be Banned In Public Places
Damaging health is the primary reason why smoking in public places are being banned. First, smoking has a negative effect on non-smokers health. According to Bethany S., author of " Ban Smoking in Public Areas" non-smoker who sits with someone who smokes it makes him has the same problem and get the name of "second-hand-smoke"(2008). in this case it shows that both smoker and non-smoker have the same problem and risks. So, it is not far that non-smokers can get a disease like the cancer same as the smokers.…
Increasing Tobacco Bans
People say that increasing tobacco bans isn’t effective, and won’t be prosperous. People believe that the penalties aren’t stiff enough, causing smokers to continue to smoke because they know they won’t have to suffer a harsh punishment. The bans aren’t intimidating enough to people that smoke. Furthermore, an increase of tobacco bans will just cause people to go smoke somewhere else; if people aren’t allowed to smoke in one area, they’ll just go somewhere else and smoke there. Moreover, tobacco bans can take freedom away from people, possibly causing issues with people who smoke; since they will be angry they aren’t allowed to smoke in great deal of places.…

Problem/Solution Essay
Nicotine addiction.
The smoking habit is the principal cause of illness, disability and death around the world. More than five million of people in the world die due to smoking habit every year. If we don’t take care of this in 2030 the amount will be ten million. Seven million of these deaths would be in poor countries.
Cigarettes Should be Illegal Essay
One of the largest and most problematic health issues in our society is smoking. Smoking is currently the leading cause of death in our country, due to its harmful and addicting contents, such as nicotine and tobacco. Although millions die from it each year, smoking is the single most preventable cause of death as well. Without smoking, a tremendous amount of money and lives will be saved. I think that our country should ban smoking and the production of cigarettes in order to maintain a healthier nation, help save the environment, and prevent the almost 1000 deaths that they cause in fires each year.
First Surgeon-General's Report
Smoking has resulted in over 20 million deaths since 1964. About 443,000 people die every year from smoking related illnesses and for every dead person, there are 20 people who grapple with one or more tobacco-related illnesses. The United States loses 193 billion USD annually in medical expenses and lost productivity. 17% of high school seniors are smokers, and one fifth of adult Americans continue to smoke. As the dangers of smoking have become better understood, reducing the number of people who smoke has become a major focus for those interested in public health. Some researchers have also found that smoking by pregnant women causes the deaths of over 5,000 babies and 115,000 miscarriages. The best way to get rid of the suffering and loss of life by cigarettes is to ban them. We can no longer stand aside and watch fellow Americans die because they smoke cigarettes. - 1. Teen Smoking By: Kate Phillips Lately a problem has occurred with teen smoking. The number of teens who smoke has dramatically risen over the past years. This is a problem because smoking causes big health risks that lead to problems and diseases that can kill you. Teens are mainly smoking when there is no supervision. It usually occurs in the parks, under bridges, and in town away from their parents. They are usually doing it because of peer pressure and they think it is cool. Those are the reasons why smoking is bad, and why, when and where their doing it. One of my solutions to stop smoking is by educating the teens and their parents. Schools could have after school classes that tell the hazards of smoking. In the classes they could talk about is how bad smoking is to your health. They could also show the parents some visuals showing how smoking ages your skin and yellows your teeth. In the classes they could also show or tell the parents what will happen to their kids if they do not stop smoking. This would hopefully convince them to stop buying cigarettes for their kids. It would also be important to teach both the students and parents about the health risks/ problems and diseases smoking can cause such as cancer, emphysema, and heart disease. Finally you could have motivational speakers come in and talk to the parents and teens. They could talk to the families about alternatives to smoking and share their experiences. That would be my first step to end teen smoking. My second solution on how to stop smoking is by stopping the media that supports smoking. First, we could stop magazine ads. I think stopping magazine ads would be a good idea because teens are always reading magazines and seeing the pictures in them. If you do not have the ads in print, the “glamour” of smoking would be lessened. Next, we could get rid of clothing that promotes cigarettes or smoking. It would be a good idea because teens are always having to deal with peer pressure. So, if it is not on the market or in stores, teens will not think of it as being “cool”. Lastly, we could stop advertising smoking on television and in movies. One reason why, you should stop having actors/actresses advertise smoking because teens look up to them and want to be like them. Also, kids and teens are always watching television and movies. That would be my second step in stopping teen smoking. If I was having to begin today with stopping smoking by teenagers I would begin by stopping the media that supports smoking. One reason why I think this is the best idea is because teens or kids are always seeing these
- 2. advertisements. If teens or kids are not seeing the advertisements they want think it is so “cool”. If famous or rich people are seen smoking in advertisements, teens are likely to think that smoking is part of that lifestyle. Because teens look up to these people, they think if they smoke they will be cool like the actors/ actresses who do. You always see the big billboards with the flashy pictures of the people with cigarettes in their hands or hanging out of their mouths. Also you always see the big company names displayed all over the gas stations and in many other places such as Camel, Marlboro, Pall Mall, Coral, and Winston who are always saying smoking will make you feel good about yourself and it will make you cool. Actually, it does the opposite. The media does not show pictures of the health issues that smoking causes. That is why I think getting rid of the media is the best solution to the problem. Something can be done. Action can be taken to start to solve this problem. First, everybody needs to go out and talk to the companies and convince them to take down any pictures with cigarettes and signs of the company’s names that promote smoking. You can also talk to those people who help make the laws for our state and country. Secondly, we need to talk to the companies to end clothing lines that have pictures or words on them that promote smoking and ban television and movies that have any type of smoking or cigarettes in them. Those are the ways that I think we could solve this problem so we can put an end to teen smoking.

Teen Smoking
Did you know that everyday about 2,500 kids and teens will try their first cigarette? About 16% of those 2,500 will become daily smokers. Teen smoking in a huge problem in today’s society. Kids and teens could start smoking as soon as middle school. Why teens start smoking, when they usually start, the health problems that come along with it, and how to quit smoking.
High schoolers are more likely to start smoking because of their parents smoking, peer pressure,or advertising from tobacco companies. When your constantly around parents that smoke it will make a kid or teen more curious as to how it feels to smoke. Peer pressure is a huge thing in high school, especially around friends and peers. When around a friend, or peer, who smokes they might ask the people around them to try it , and constantly asking would make the non-smokers feel obligated to smoke with them. When driving up to a gas station there tends to be tobacco ads posted all over the windows. Seeing these ads every time someone goes to a gas station it will make them begin to wonder how it is like to smoke and want to try what tobacco companies are advertising.. Constantly seeing ads, being peer pressured, or even being around it will make an addiction from smoking more inclined to happen.
Underage smoking can lead to major health problems. Some of the mild , but still health threatening, are shortness of breath, more headaches, and vision problems. Mild health problems can lead into more serious and more life threatening ones. Heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic cough are all examples of more serious health problems that come along with smoking cigarettes.
If someone has already started to smoke and decided to quit here are some ways that may make it easier. Going cold turkey, a term for smokers that have quit, is a way to cut out nicotine and cigarettes with no help and just quitting instantly, not leaning off of cigarettes just stopping. Sometimes going cold turkey may not be the best option for smokers wanting to quit. Many people who smoke chose to use medication, such as Chantix, which helps relieve the urge of nicotine addiction. Others can get help from therapy or a doctor. In the end there are many choices to help anyone who smokes quit smoking or the use of nicotine.
In conclusion underage smoking is terrible for your health. Teens come across smoking many different ways. Some are advertising, peer pressure, and seeing their parents smoking.Smoking causes many health problems such as, lung cancer, chronic cough, and heart disease. Once you start smoking it is hard to stop and in the end will only cause more harm than good.
