Questions to Ask Someone About Their Hobbies

The first thing you need to understand is the question someone could ask you about your hobbies or interests.

There are several ways someone could ask you this question so let’s take a look at them.

First, I should tell you I am from England and English people rarely use the word ‘hobbies’. It sounds a little old-fashioned these days. People often use the word ‘interests’ to replace hobbies.

So it could be any of the above questions.

I think these are fairly simple to understand.

How to Reply

But there is a larger range of ways of replying to these questions.

People usually indulge in their interests in their free time or spare time. This is a time when we are not working or studying. Often it could be at the weekend and in the evenings.

So one by one we can use these phrases like this:

In my free time, I like to…

At the weekend I like….

I like to …

I am into …

(This means that you like something very much)

When I have the time, I like to …

I’m interested in…

Examples of Hobbies

Each country has its own culture and therefore the people will have different interests and hobbies. Some of these interests are universal such as playing the piano, going to the gym or drawing. But many others are unique to the country itself.

Below is a selection of typical interests and hobbies in England.

Go through all of these hobbies and interests and look the words up in a dictionary.

Make a list of interests that people in your country like to do in their free time. Write a few sentences about each one if you can.

Talking About Interests in Detail

When we talk about our interests, there are two things we can do.

And then say why you like it

So, for example, someone who likes football might say something like this:

I like to play football at the weekend with my friends. We have a small club and we get together and play a game of football. Nothing serious just for fun, really.

But we like it because it is good fun and we can all have a laugh together plus it is good exercise and gets us out of the hous

In the first sentence, the speaker says what the interest is, when he does it and who with. He then goes on further to explain that he and his friends are members of a small local football club.

He says that is it Nothing serious just for fun really — this means that no one takes the football club very seriously. They are not trying to be professional football players. They just want to have some fun.

He then goes on to explain why they do it. He repeats that it is fun and they can all have a laugh together — this is another way to say that it is good fun. Then he mentions that playing football is good exercise — another reason why he plays football.

And lastly he says it gets us out of the house — this means that it is good to leave the house. Staying indoors all day is considered an unhealthy thing to do.

Let’s look at another example.

I am an avid reader and every weekend you can find me with my nose in a book. There is nothing I like better than curling up with a good book in my favourite armchair and losing myself in whatever world the book is set in.

I love reading because I can enter other worlds and meet all these amazing characters. I love seeing all of the scenes play out in my imagination.

This speaker talks about her deep interest in reading.

She says she is an avid reader — this means she loves reading and has a very strong desire for reading.

She goes on to say that every weekend you can find me with my nose in a book — this means that if we were to find her we could see her reading. She also uses the phrase curling up with a good book in my favourite armchair , to describe in more detail her love for reading. She likes to sit in an armchair curled up in a ball so that she is comfortable.

The speaker mentions the world the book is set in because the setting in the book is not like the real world.

She then explains why she likes reading and talks about other worlds , amazing characters and seeing all the scenes play out in her imagination .

This is what you need to do when talking about your hobby or interest.

You need to go into deeper detail of what the interest is and where and when you do this hobby. And are you alone or with friends?

Then talk about why you like it. Try to think of three reasons why you like this special hobby of yours.

Like Doing vs Like To Do

We often use these two phrases when talking about our interests and hobbies. Or to describe things we like to do or things we like doing.

Like + gerund – I like swimming

Like + infinitive – I like to swim

Loosely speaking, you can use either of these expressions. Each one has the same meaning.

How to Talk at Length About Your Hobbies

If you are asked about your hobbies in the IELTS test for Part Two, then you will have to talk about your hobby or interest at length. The same if you are asked this question in an interview for college or a job interview.

You need to think about how to talk about the things you like to do and how to speak for a long time. This is where all the English question words can help you.

Think about the question words what , where , when , why , who and how .

What – I like to paint

Where – in my shed in the garden

When – at the weekend and whenever I have spare time

Why – I just lose myself in the moment, it is very relaxing and time just flies by

Who – by myself it is a very solitary hobby

How often – whenever I can!

And then you can put all of this together and it might look like this:

I like to paint in my free time. I can’t paint in the house because my parents say it is too messy, all the paint and oil, so I use the shed in our garden. I can sit in there and no one disturbs me.

I usually paint at the weekend and after school, I like to paint whenever I have some spare time.

I like painting because I can just lose myself in it, I just get lost in the moment and forget time completely. It is very relaxing and time just flies by very quickly.

I like to spend time on my own and paint. I like to be able to think and be quiet. I like to be on my own and think.

I try to paint whenever I can but I have exams coming up so I don’t have as much free time any more. But after my exams, I will probably get back into it.

Use all the question words and ask yourself questions about your hobby or interest. Interview yourself about your hobby and when you have all the answers put them together into one long talk.

Then recite it out to yourself.

Describe Feelings About the Hobby

First of all, let’s look at some words we can use to describe how we feel about something in English.

I think you probably know how to use these words to describe general emotional states you might have on different days, but you can also use them when talking about your interests.

Let me show you how.

We played a game of cricket against another local team but we lost terribly. I was kind of angry even though it’s only a game. I just felt frustrated because we had practiced for so long.

Our band played live for the first time last week. We were all really nervous, but it went pretty well. I think we were all surprised by how much the crowd liked us.

Describe Opinions About the Hobby

Here are some useful phrases you can use to describe your opinion about your interest.

You can use these to express opinions about your interest.

Let’s look at some examples:

In my opinion, doing yoga is a very good thing to do. It can really help you relax and we all need to do that in modern society.

Personally speaking, I think that cooking is a very useful hobby. After all, everyone needs to eat and everyone likes to eat delicious food.

I really believe that going to the gym can help you live a long and healthy life. As we get older we need to have more strength to do daily things in our life.

As far as I’m concerned, doing carpentry is a very rewarding and satisfying hobby. I have made some really beautiful chairs and a bookcase for our home.

You could be asked to talk about your hobbies or interests in Part Two of the IELTS speaking test. Or in an interview for college or a job interview.

In this situation, you will need to talk at length about what you like to do in your free time.

How To Talk Easily About Your Hobbies

Keep it very simple with a part-one question like this. Just say one or two hobbies you have. You can talk about anything you like doing in your free time.

Then, add one or two more simple sentences. You could say:

Stop. Please don’t do that.

In part one, just give simple answers (10 or 20 seconds) just like in a normal conversation. And don’t talk too much.

In part one, focus on fluency; try to speak smoothly and quite quickly, without hesitation.

What If You Don’t Have Any Hobbies?

It’s ok if you can’t think of any hobbies to talk about. Just say anything you like doing in your free time. This could be:

Well, everyone has their own leisure pursuits , and mine is reading. The book I’m reading at the moment is The Godfather by renowned author Mario Puzo. It’s a classic, really, and I’d recommend it.

2 Is it important to have a hobby?

Definitely! I mean nowadays life is getting more and more hectic , so people are always under an enormous amount of stress . That’s why it’s helpful to get into some recreational activities to be able to unwind and just forget about life for a minute, you know?

3 Is it harmful to spend too much time on a hobby?

Yes, I believe spending excessive time on a hobby may have an adverse effect on people. You may end up having not enough time for your priorities like family or work. For example, it’s easy for me to lose myself in books and neglect the deadlines at work.

4 What free-time activities would you like to try in the future?

I would love to have a crack at extreme sports in the future, maybe ski-diving. It looks like a blast and I think I will get a real kick out of free-falling from enormous heights.

Model answer

When I was at school I got introduced to cycling by my older brother. I was about 12 at the time when he one day approached me and asked for some help fixing his bike. I didn’t know much about bicycles back then so I would mostly watch him work on it and hand him some tools occasionally. Later that summer he helped me build my first track bike and that’s where my passion really took off . It was a real revelation and showed how cool bikes really are!

From then on, I would spend almost the entirety of my free time either riding the bike or upgrading it. I was really keen on exploring the city where I lived and having a reliable form of transportation facilitated this. I also got to know some really cool people whom I shared this passion with.

Eventually I moved to a bigger city to study in college and as I lived next to it I didn’t need the bike that much so I left it at home. Now it gathers dust , forgotten. Sometimes I feel bad about not using it nearly as much as I did before.

IELTS Speaking Part 3

Hobbies and free time.

Can you tell something about a person by their hobbies? I believe so, yes – for instance a shy, introverted individual is much more likely to be into things like reading or collecting post stamps. Similarly, a more outgoing character will chose an active, socially-involved pastime like a team sports of a kind. Of course there can be exceptions – an introvert who sets out to battle his social anxiety and gets into an activity that implies interacting with other people.

How has the way we spend free time changed over the years? To address this question we first of all have to understand that people from different background will have changed to varying degrees. Folk living in the countryside will have remained fairly unchanged with their hobbies not altered by progress and change. Urbanites on the other hand have undergone the greatest transformation of their leisure activities – mobile phones for them have become a workplace, a playground and a dating platform all wrapped into one . Most also don’t socialise as much as they used to – at least not face to face.

What kind of new leisure activities can we see appearing in the future? One of the next big things they are talking about nowadays is so called ‘metaverse’ – something similar to virtual reality where you could meet friends, strike up conversations with strangers, find common interests and so on. Think Facebook with a virtual reality helmet and you will get the idea. On the other end of the spectrum we see the increase in popularity of wild tourism. People choose to go on guided (and quite expensive!) tours to exotic locations to reunite with the nature. Ultimately, I believe than everyone will find something to their liking when it comes to new leisure developments.

Some people choose to work as little as possible to have more free time. Is this a positive or a negative trend? It is true – nowadays there is a popular notion that work should not be pivotal in your life. Therefore both young and old people are tying to optimise their time management, hoping to work smarter rather that harder. After all, throughout human history laziness proved to be a driver for inventiveness. I don’t think that this should be a reason for concern. This might make the working process less dull and therefore more inspired, promoting out-of-the-box thinking .

It is said that in order to be a complete person one has to have a hobby. Do you agree? That is a very bold thing to assume, but whoever said that does have a point . Having a hobby shows dedication, it means that you are ready to commit to something. But whether it really does complete us is the real question. I would disagree. While it certainly makes us more interesting as a person, it neither makes nor brakes who we are.

Is your generations’ lifestyle much different from that of your parents? If so, what are the differences? The first evident difference in lifestyles is how much more outgoing my parents were. They would spend every weekend out and about partying, visiting their friends, travelling to nearby cities. So I would say people of that generation had a much more active and varied social life. There were no mobile phones back then so people actually had to come up with ideas how to fill their free time. Some visited their friends or families, others went to the movies or concert, libraries and other places that are not that popular nowadays.

Hobbies and free time vocabulary

Passion (n) – a strong interest in somebody or someone that you actively pursue To be into – to like something or someone, to be interested in it Pastime (n) – an activity that you do in your free time. Often used as ‘national pastime’, e.g. drinking tea is believed to be British national pastime Playground (n) – used figuratively here, a playground is a place outside where kids play games, climb ladders, rock on swing sets etc. Socialise (v) – to talk to people in order to get to know them better or just to fulfil the need of interacting with somebody else. Something to your liking – another way of saying that you like it Leisure (adj) – not having to do with work or need. A leisure activity is done for fun rather than immediate benefit.

General vocabulary

Back then – in the past, before Take off – to start growing rapidly. If something takes off – it becomes bigger or more successful, i.e. a business that took off. Entirety of (n) – all of, the whole part of something. Facilitate (v) – to make something easier Gather dust – if some item gathers dust it is no longer used as much as before. Social anxiety – feeling of unreasonable worry associated with talking to other people, especially strangers Address the question – to answer (or try to answer) the question. Addressing a question can also mean solving (or trying to solve) some issue. All wrapped into one – combining several things in one. A swiss knife is also a screwdriver, a saw and a corkscrew all wrapped into one. Pivotal (adj) – extremely important or meaningful Out-of-the-box thinking – thinking in a way that avoids or ignores conventional methods and ideas in order to try find something new, possibly more effective. Have a point – if a person has a point it means their arguments make sense and are reasonable. Neither make nor brake – not to have decisive effect on something Come up with – to think of something new, i.e. come up with a solution to a problem

Hobby is something done by an individual during their leisure time. So, yet again this is something related to you and is asked in the Part I of the speaking section. Although it is assumed that hobby is something every individual has, often times people do not have any hobby. So, what should you do in such cases. Simply say a no. Well, remember, no matter what, never say a NO in the speaking section. If you don’t have a hobby make up the answer. In the end they are judging you on your speaking skills.

For today, let us have a look at some of the questions related to hobby that could be asked.

What are your hobbies?

Hobby is something I believe pulls out the hidden talent of an individual. Although most people have one or other kind of hobbies, I love writing, reading and travelling So, whenever I get time I usually pick some novel or a magazine or newspaper for reading. Or else when I am not reading I usually write on my blog or a diary that I have. On weekends, I mostly prefer to travel to new places. The idea of meeting new people and knowing them really excites me.

2. What do you love about your hobbies?

Frankly speaking I would say everything. Reading opens up a new world in front of me. A world I had never seen,opinions that I had never heard of. It seems as if I am present in a particular situation and having chat with some of the great writers of all times. When I write, I feel as if I am free. The idea that I am able to interact with so many people out there and in some way able to have an impact on their lives, gives a sense of responsibility as well as of achievement. Travelling on the other hand connects me with myself. When I go out in nature or interact with others I feel as if I have opened a layer of myself.

3. What type of hobbies are popular among teenagers in your country?

Hobby is something that completely depends on an individual. However, with coming years, I have observed teenagers spending time in Facebook or twitter or Instagram. However, there are even some who love music or dancing and enroll themselves in those classes. There are some kids who like painting or photography. I think it all depends on an individual and with coming times, people will surely give more importance to hobbies.
