Are Two Heads Better Than One? It Depends

Communication and competence are key, study suggests

From coalition governments to teams of scientists, the notion that “ two heads are better than one” is the en vogue approach to problem-solving these days.   The premise is simple: We perform better and make more sensible decisions by putting our heads together than by working alone.  For example, let’s say that there are two stock traders – Warren and Ben.  The notion is that if they work together to pick stocks they will make more profit than if they work in isolation. But is this true? And, if so, is this the case all of the time or are there some situations in which they’ll benefit more from collaboration than others? What factors influence this? And what will maximize the success of the collaboration? A new study offers novel insights into these questions. Published in the journal Science last week, it was led by Bahador Bahrami of the Interacting Mind Project (University College London and Aarhus University in Denmark). In this research, two participants worked together or in isolation to make decisions about visual images. Their task was a little bit like a scientist’s version of Where’s Waldo: They had to pick the image that contained a target. They initially decided on an answer alone. Then, if the duo gave different answers, they had to discuss who gave the right answer and form a joint decision. To test whether two heads really are better than one, these collective decisions were then compared to performance when each person worked alone. The first results showed that, yes, two heads were indeed better than one. The volunteers combined their information “optimally” and reached a level that none of the players could possibly achieve as an individual (good news for Warren and Ben!).  In effect, the volunteers were able to combine weak neuronal activities residing in two separate brains to maximize performance.  There was, however, a twist in the tale.   The key to the success was communication – about how they felt about their answer and how confident they were in their decision. When they were not allowed to communicate with each other about their confidence, they couldn’t do any better than the best solo player.  So, even if Warren found a fantastic junior mining stock that he thought was a ‘sure thing’, it would only help to maximize profits if he could share his level of confidence in the stock with Ben.      It was also critical that both players reported their confidence reliably. If one of them was poor at the task but didn’t know it, the team performance only got worse. Put differently, if Warren’s ‘sure thing’ was actually a mediocre option, then making a decision together would not make their team better at all. In fact, it would have a detrimental effect.   This implies that two heads may be better than one, but only when we can competently discuss our different perspectives.  If one person in the team has flawed information -- or is less competent -- then the outcome can be negative and perhaps you should completely ignore them. Bahrami’s study tells us that what’s important for successful collaboration is the ability to estimate and report our own ability accurately. However, this is not always easy, especially for incompetent individuals. In psychology, there is a known cognitive fallacy called the Dunning-Kruger effect. The most incompetent individuals often overestimate their skills and think they are all above average, though that’s logically impossible. Having such a person in your team would severely damage performance. Simply put, if you are not sure about your competency in a team, the most productive thing to do is to tell your team members -- though in reality, of course, this is not easy. Another well known cognitive fallacy is the overconfidence effect , which is the tendency for our subjective confidence to be larger than our objective accuracy.  Alongside the Dunning-Kruger effect, these effects would imply that successful collaboration has some problems to overcome before we can reap the benefits.  They might also point to the construct of confidence as being a difficult indicator of accuracy, but studies like Bahrami’s suggest that by engaging in a discussion about our confidence judgements we may be able to refine them to reach an optimal decision. Finally, it is interesting to consider the extent to which the principle that two heads are better than one extends to three, four or more heads.  Let’s say that in addition to Warren and Ben, we introduce Mervyn and Vince to the equation.  What would happen to performance?  In this context, the phenomenon of "social loafing" may be informative.  Increasing the number of group members can sometimes reduce the social pressure on each individual in the group, and actually reduce a given person’s contribution. For example, Warren might be a great stock trader when he is being assessed on his work in isolation, but he may work at only half of his potential when the focus is on the team’s performance.     So, are two heads really better than one? It seems the answer is yes, but success depends on the competency and confidence of the individuals involved. And by the way, if you’re investing your money with Warren and Ben, you might want to take very careful note of how well they communicate with each other.

Are Two Heads Better Than One?

It depends on the heads and how they interact..

Posted  February 14, 2016

According to the adage, “Two heads are better than one.” But is it true that we can work more intelligently as a team than as individuals? New research by Carnegie Mellon University professor Anita Williams Woolley and her colleagues suggests that the intelligence of a group can exceed that of its members if the right conditions are met.

First we need to get a handle on what psychologists mean by “intelligence.” A century ago, British psychologist and statistician Charles Spearman found that individuals tend to perform similarly across a wide range of cognitive tests, even though they may do better on some tasks than others.

Let’s say we subject Candace and Caleb to a battery of verbal and quantitative tests. We find that Candace does better on the verbal than quantitative tests and the reverse for Caleb. However, Candace still does better than Caleb at both kinds of tests. According to Spearman’s theory, Candace has greater general intelligence than Caleb, even though their specific abilities differ. General intelligence is like the tide that raises both the yacht and the dinghy.

Intelligence includes more than just knowledge and skills. It also encompasses the ability to reason and to solve problems as well as to learn from experience. Speed of cognitive processing is an important component too. So intelligent people aren’t just book smart—they can also think quickly and effectively.

Traditionally, many psychologists have assumed that the intelligence of a group was no more than the average intelligence of the individual members. In other words, two heads may be able to do more work than one head, but two heads can’t work any smarter than either one could alone. Alternatively, some psychologists have suggested that the intelligence of the group is merely that of its most intelligent member, who dominates the group and coordinates its activity.

However, Woolley and colleagues’ findings show than neither of these beliefs is correct. In their lab, they had groups complete a set of cognitive tasks, much like the test batteries used to measure individual intelligence. They also measured the general intelligence of each individual group member.

Woolley and her associates discovered that the intelligence of the individual members didn’t predict how well the group would perform. Instead, they found that any particular group tended to perform similarly across tasks. And, of course, some groups tended to outperform other groups regardless of the test.

In other words, the group as a whole exhibited a kind of general intelligence. Woolley calls this “collective intelligence” to distinguish it from the general intelligence of individuals. These findings are in line with idea of extended cognition , which states that mental processes aren’t encapsulated inside the heads of individuals but extends to others working as teams. Thus, the team as a whole develops a group mind.

Woolley’s team has uncovered a number of factors that determine how well a group will perform. These findings will certainly be of interest to anyone who has to work collaboratively with other people. This pretty much includes all of us at one time or another.

The most important factor in determining how intelligently a group will perform has nothing to do accumulated knowledge or skill set. Rather, it depends on how well the individual members can read the emotions of the other group members. Woolley calls this “social perceptiveness.”

In one study, Woolley and colleagues first tested participants’ ability to judge facial expressions of emotions in photographs. The participants were then assigned to groups, which performed a battery of cognitive tasks. The average social perceptiveness of the individual members was the strongest predictor of how intelligently the group as a whole would perform. This was true even when the group members could only communicate through text messaging so that all of the usual indicators of emotion, such a facial expressions, posture, and intonation of voice, were missing.

While the average intelligence of the members does contribute to the group’s collective intelligence, social perceptiveness is more important. Thus, a group composed of members who have moderate intelligence but are very good at reading each other’s emotions can outperform a group with high average intelligence but low social perceptiveness.

Another important factor in collective intelligence is the degree of diversity, especially in terms of cognitive style or personality . Having members who approach tasks differently and have different skills and experiences can enhance the collective intelligence of the group—to a degree.

Too much similarity among members limits the range of approaches the group can apply to a task. Likewise, too much difference among members can lead to communication breakdowns and a lack of empathy for others in the group. Instead, a “Goldilocks” zone of not too much and not too little diversity leads to the best performance.

Collective intelligence is an example of what’s known as an emergent property, a characteristic of a system that doesn’t occur in any of its parts. Emergence isn’t solely a social-psychological phenomenon. Rather, it occurs regularly throughout the natural world.

A good example of emergence is water. Although water is a liquid, it’s composed of two gases, hydrogen and oxygen. Thus, water as a whole has characteristics—wetness, waviness—that neither of its components has. This is what is meant by an “emergent property.”

As psychology moves into the twenty-first century, we’re finding more and more examples of emergence in social interactions. We aren’t just, in philosopher Alan Watts’ words, “skin-encapsulated egos.” We are indeed individuals, but we’re also components within larger social systems that take on identities of their own.

Paragraph On Two Heads Are Better Than One

Two Heads Are Better Than One Two heads are better than one. Is working in a group better than working independently? I think so because you can get more ideas, do the work in a quicker time period and accomplish bigger goals. Firstly, if you work in a group there are more people with you which means there is a variety of thinkers. A variety of thinkers means a mixture of ideas and more success. For example, say you and your staff members have created a product and you want to advertise it in many ways.

Essay Example on Expand The Theme Two Heads Are Better Than One

If you were just working on it alone, you probably wouldn’t get as many results as well as the same quality of work as you would in a group. Secondly, when you do group work instead of individual work, you tend to do the work much faster because the work is divided.

The more and more people there are, the lesser time it takes to finish the same work. Let’s take a simple example, a project on aeroplanes. You have to answer about 6 questions on aeroplanes and make a poster board. If you are working in a group, you can divide all the work to each member of the group (answering questions, designing the board, editing, etc. and the process will go much quicker than you having to do all of it yourself. So group work is done much quicker than individual work.

essay two heads are better than one

Proficient in: Communication

“ Ok, let me say I’m extremely satisfy with the result while it was a last minute thing. I really enjoy the effort put in. ”

Lastly, when you work in a group you can accomplish bigger goals because there are more people. For example, say you have a goal to help the hungry people in the community. If you try to accomplish this goal by yourself, it would be very difficult to do. But when you make an organization, everybody can help and you will meet the needs of your goal. To sum up, it is better to work in a group than to work individually. Thus, two heads are better than one.

Two Heads Are Better Than One

The proverb ‘Two heads are better than one.’ stands valid in all spheres of life. It means two individuals together can accomplish a work better than one individual. In terms of problem solving ability, two heads together can offer more solutions than one head. Whether in school, in office or at home, we see that not only is a work completed in lesser time or a problem is solved with better solution in a less hassled way but also there is a joy when we do it in pairs or groups.

Human beings have different styles of thinking. This engenders various perspectives. So, when two heads work together, multiple perspectives or dimensions come to the fore. A topic or an issue is seen in a more holistic way.

Besides this, two heads can debate over the efficiency of the proposed solutions to solve a problem or a roadmap to accomplish a work. When two individuals work together, the fatigue or anxiety to overcome the hurdles and clinch the target is also less. Therefore, ‘Two heads are better than one.’

Personal Narrative: Why Two Heads Are Better Than One

essay two heads are better than one

Show More After reading the assignments out of our book it was very obvious that we were going to have a project that goes with the reading we just completed. After going through the whole process and through all the ups and downs it allows for me to give an answer to the question, “Are two heads really better than one?”. Since this project was completed and as the project was very productive I can state that I do believe two heads is better than one. But not every time you work with a group is the assignment you are working on completing better. The trick is to follow many of the things we read out of the book to make sure you all are able to reach your one main goal. On the first day we meet with our groups we wanted to make sure we started all our …show more content… We also assigned to each other what subtitles we would work on and complete. To make them even we each took two and Chris took three as one of his was a topic that didn’t have as much information. During day two we did have a leader stick out. The leader in our group most of the time was Lauren, the way she stood out as the leader so soon was she was the one that stepped up and said she would create a google document so we could all put our notes in one area and each of us would be able to see what the other individuals in our group were …show more content… Today as a group we finalized how we were going to make the powerpoint and we began working on the kahoot. With all of us following Lauren’s idea of each individual putting in at least two questions in the kahoot. With Lauren stepping up in helping lead our group it definitely allowed for our group to work more efficient but the best thing about Lauren being our leader was she wasn’t bossy about anything she did and if we didn’t totally agree on something she said she was fine with it. Through our group making sure we would all be ready for our presentation monday we decided to make a groupchat to finalize everything so we would be able to pull off a great presentation. To reiterate the question from before I do believe two heads are better than one. Through me putting my brain together with others I do believe we were able to pull out a better presentation than if we all did this topic by ourselves. There were lots of materials in Moodle about how to create one and with the help of my instructor Audra and Moodle I was able to create strong theses for my research paper. The week when we started to learn about APA and MLA reference styles seemed overwhelming because there are so many specific instructions. After reading about it in Norton Field Guide, it started to make more sense, and I was able to get a good grade when our assignment was about how to quote, paraphrase and summarize my resources. In my opinion referencing in APA style was one of my strong sides.…

Santiago is my code hero because he shows endurance during the struggle between trying to catch the marlin and courage for still fishing, despite the putdowns and insults said against Santiago. Santiago is and old men living in a village near the ocean. He's old, poor, and considered as a joke by the fellow fishermen. He is taken care of by a boy named Manolin, who helps and guides Santiago. According to the book "Old man and the sea", Santiago demonstrates endurance when he struggled for 7 days trying to catch the marlin. Santiago at the beginning of the book was tired and old, every morning there is nothing to look up to but the mocking and insults of the other fishermen. Not having caught anything in about 86 days, Santiago depends on Manolin. Desperate to catch a fish he uses the chance to make an attempt to catch the marlin. The marlin the size of the boat would be a long struggle especially for Santiago. Determined and dedicated, Santiago endures the struggle for 7 days until his death. In the novel "old man and the sea" Santiago shows courage by going after the marlin, even if he is made fun of and picked at. Being able to keep fishing and have the courage to go after the marlin shows his ability to not care. Santiago is my literary hero because of his endurance and courage. To keep going, just as this person who I consider is a modern day hero is Lance Armstrong. Lance Armstrong has been through so much, similar to what Santiago has gone through. Two Heads are better than one

There are many factors that play into making a company successful. Decision making is one of the biggest of them all. The decisions/choices we make can determine the success/failure of a company. For this reason, today I will prove that “two heads are better than one”. I will provide you with studies that have proven this to be true. I will also explain that although group work is ideal, you must have the right group in order to function correctly.

Our lives consist of constant streams of decision making and choices. There are so many things that occur in our lives daily that can affect our thought process. Sometimes we are distracted and cannot fully focus. This does not make us bad employees. For this reason, I believe that groups are important. Each person in a group adds value. Not one person is exactly the same. We each carry a skill that would be useful in a group.

Group Dynamics play an important part of group Success. Only a dream team will work together, without deterring from the project’s goals. An important element of group dynamics is allowing team member to develop as a unit and that takes time (Scheid, 1).

According to BrianMach Sports Coach, one way that groups learn to work well together is through a “cohesion” process. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “honest differences are often a healthy sign of progress.”

The Essay on Critical Thinking Making Decision Decisions

Critical Thinking and Decision Making Critical thinking and decision-making are two valuable issues, which enable us to address our concerns in our daily lives in a more practical fashion. Critical thinking can be understood as a way of becoming aware of, and taking control of our own thinking processes in order to think more effectively. Critical Thinking is about becoming a better thinker in ...

How does the cohesive process work when everyone is different on a team? Basically, there elements to the cohesive process that help align groups without the harmful groupthink dilemma (Scheid, 2).

There different things that must be looked at when forming a group. For example, you can look at the culture or lifestyle of an individual. You can look at there religion, or upbringing. These all play in the formation of a functional group.

Although group work has been used in teaching for thousands of years, it really wasn’t until the 1970’s

Some may attribute this gentleman’s raise as being based on his work performance. You would think that would be the fair way to do it. This is not the situation in this case. This assistant scored lower on his ratings then I did, but received a higher percentage. While I scored higher, and received more positive comments from co-workers, he received the ultimate prize. This in my oppinion, was a definite cause of Gender discrimination.

Sometimes companies fear placing female’s in leadership roles. A big reason, is based on pregnancy. When women get pregnant they tend to leave or take an absence from their position, to nurture and bond with their newborm. Men tend to continue working and providing for their families. Many companies fear this, and tend to choose a male instead. The Pregnancy Discrimination act of 1978 “prohibits employers from discriminating against workers based on pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions” (McKay,1).

This act only comes into play when the company has 15 or more employees.

A company is not allowed to discrimante against pregnant females. They are required to look solely at their qualifications. Unfortunitely, this is not a followed law. Companies definitely discriminate against this. Because of companies failing to abide by this law, several complaints and lawsuits have been formed. During the year of 2006, the EEOC received 4,901 charges of pregnancy-based discrimination (McKay, 1).

The Term Paper on Age Discrimination Older Work

No matter how talented or experienced one employee may be over another, workplace history has demonstrated more than just a few times that the younger candidate is often the one to win the promotion. Age discrimination has become more than a minor inconvenience throughout the twentieth century; indeed, the issue has become such a hot potato within the workplace that laws have been forced into ...

Based on this information, it is clear to see that there is a definite gender discrimination issue still occurring in our workforce. The problem is that companies are getting away with this, and women are struggling harder to prove themselves.

It can sometimes feel like we are defeated. At times it feels hopeless. I know in my own personal experience, I have wanted to give up many times. I have fought with myself to not give up on my goals. The constant preasure of proving yourself strictly based on your gender is exhausting. I work twice as hard, get paid two times less, devote myself more than many, and am still fighting to move up from the very bottom. I have seen many men come and go from their position in less than a year. Some are truly talented and work extremely hard, while others don’t deserve to even have their job.

So what can we do to stop gender discrimination? How do we show others that women are equally talented and can accomplish the same? This is where true leadership comes into play. A leader is someone who look up to. You soak up their knowledge and learn their ways. You develop a level of trust and admiration. The more true leaders we have, the more knowledge can be passed. It takes one leader to share there values and beliefs. Just one leader can make a huge difference.

For a very long time, people thought that the roles of an effective leader, were all masculine based characteristics. However, there are many female roles that are an absolute necessity. Some of these roles are: strong interpersonal skills, concern for building cooperative, trusting relationships, and use of behaviors. These are feminine based characteristics and are an absolute must in order to be an effective leader.

I personally have encountered gender discrimination in the workforce. I have encountered this on more then one occasion in my current position. My current Manager is not a very effective manager. He is extremely angry and demeening. I have been told by him on several occasions, that a male is much smarter then a female in a technical field. He has informed me on numerous occasions, that I a, not capable of doing more then what I currently do. So how do I handle this? How do I not get defeated? I fight with myself every day. Many days, I want to give up and just settle for what he feels I am capable of. There are many moments where I dout myself. Am I really capable of more. Is he right? Unfortunitely I am not the only person encountering this obstacle.

The Essay on Argumentative Death Penalty Feel Crime Time

Quinte n Robles Melinda Campbell Ph. D. Philosophy August 14, 2003 Argumentative Essay: Death Penalty The death penalty is a very emotional and controversial subject in today's society. Almost anywhere you go in the world, you will find many opponents and proponents on this subject. Many families of victims feel an emotional response to the loss of a loved one or friend that has been killed or ...

It is because of managers like my current one, that people give up on there hopes and dreams. If you get emotionally beat down enough many quit. They settle for less and are never truly happy. This happens every day in our workforce. Managers get away with this behavior far to much. They intimidate you. They humiliate you and make you doubt your self worth. I myself have fallen into this trap far too often.

So what is a good Manager? To be honest there is no right answer. Every human thinks differently. We may agree on some things, but never everything. We view things our own way. Because of this, a good manager is in the eyes of each person. For me, a good manager must poses good communication skills. If a manager cannot communicate, how can they have everyone on the same page? If everyone is not on the same page, how can a company expand?

Another trait that I feel is a must in a manager is trust. When a manager micro-manages a group on a daily basis, it sets a low morale. Employees will feel very un-comfortable. They will doubt themselves and in return are apt to making more errors. The manager needs to feel confident in their team. They need to allow them to decide certain things for themselves and feel comfortable allowing them to do so. This will allow the employees to feel like part of the team.

Sometimes when you have never been in a leadership role, we tend to think that there is no need to be an assertive manager. I disagree. I believe that managers have to be assertive in certain situations. Theres a time to be a Participative leader, and a time to be assertive. Certain decisions cannot be decided as a group. That’s the purpose of a manager. They must make those decisions. As employees we need to understand this.

Finding the middle gorund as a manager is probably the hardest part of their job. IF they are too assertive people fear them. If they are to much of a participative leader people expect to be included in everything. It’s finding that middle ground that turns a manager into a leader. Employees need to know that regardless of the great boss they have, there are times when decisions must be made without their voice being heard.

The Term Paper on A Good Manager Will Always Be A Good Leader

In this essay I will demonstrate how a good manager _can_ often be a good leader, but why I also believe that explicit differences in characteristics; attitudes and methods prove them to be unique. I will do this by firstly, defining what I feel a good manager is, and what I feel a good leader is. In doing this, I will compare and contrast the two concepts in order to finally draw conclusive ...

I have encountered this problem in a previous position. I was in a leadership role. I found myself having to justify every decision to my employees. I would feel bad when they were not included. If I did make a decision without a discussion first, I would get the silent treatment. I realized that they did not respect my position. I had the fault for this.

I agree with the expression "Two heads are better than one" because usually, two people have more possibilities to solve a problem that one person alone.

Because of my experience I can say that there are a lot of situations in life in which you need help of other people, the help can be of any kind, for example you might need a person who help you to move to a new appartment, but other times you might need someone who gives you advice, in both cases, is better to have someone to help you.

Moreover, asking other person for help will give us a new approach to the situation and maybe we realize that the situation is not so bad as we thought it was. For example, if you have a problem with a friend and you are very angry, explaining your situation to another person could help you to chill out and think possible rational solutions, or maybe you discover that the problem was not so serious and you can forget the dispute.

In an academic or work situations I think it is also better to work in pairs or teams, because you can divide the work in parts and dont be stressed. For example, if you have a heavy subject in class and you think you are not going to pass the exam, you can ask some friends to summarize some of the units of the book and then, before the exam you all have all the summaries to study.

Finally, I think it is also good sharing our work and cooperate with other people, not only take advantage of them for our own benefit, but achive common goals.

In conclusion, I think there are so many reasons to prefer to work with other people that can be summarized in the idea that if we are selfishand unsupportive it is worse for us.

Fall Of Rome Dbq Essay

These documents show that Rome’s economy was very poor because of low tax revenue, labor shortages, and trade. There were natural disasters like the destructive earthquake and the flood that was responsible for the death of fifty thousand people(document 6). Then a series of plagues decimated the population(document 7). Approximately 75% of the population died from natural disasters. With more than half the population dead, there will be labor shortages throughout the empire because there aren’t enough people to support the needs of the empire. Labor shortages bring many problems. Tax revenue drops because the small population cannot pay enough taxes to support the empire as it did before the population plunged. The empire stops growing without sufficient enough money. Eventually, the Roman empire will have less resources because the empire stopped trading. There will be a lot more draftings because the army is a lot…

Fall of Rome DBQ

The great Roman Empire expanded across all of Europe and into the Middle East. Its military was one of the finest. With major trading in Africa and Britain, the economy flourished with brining many citizens a healthy income. With amazing advancements in culture and technology, Roman society was at its finest. During the Pax Romana, the Romans had 200 years of peace and good ruling by level headed dictators and emperors. Despite Rome’s greatness in all of these areas, Rome would eventually fall. Surprisingly all of these qualities that led up to a flourishing empire were the same ones that led to its demise. As Germanic tribes invaded, the military weakened and the government became unstable. Along with increased political trouble, there was a decline in economic and social structure. The fall of Rome was due to its leaders ignoring the severity of Rome’s problems.…

Before The Fall Of Rome Dbq

For one, as reported by Priscus, a Roman ambassador(449 CE), who was interviewing a former citizen of Rome: “the condition of Roman subjects during a time of peace [was] worse than war.”(Doc. E) The Roman people were in bad shape because of an unfair law, “taxes [were] very severe, and unprincipled men inflict[ed] injuries on others.”(Doc. E) The dire situation convinced the Roman citizens more and more that they should protest. And when the people did fight back, internal problems surfaced in Rome. However, not only were there harsh taxes causing turmoil, the Roman government was corrupt as well. “The climax of misery is to have to pay in order to obtain justice.”(Doc. E) The rich were bribing the lawmakers so they could get out of facing the law, and the poor didn’t have enough money to get out of punishment as well! Therefore, a great hatred between the rich and the poor was established. Rome may have been able to withstand battles on the outside, but if faced harsh battles within. The patricians believed that they could get away with whatever they wanted to, all they had to do was pay. Murder, theft, abuse and bribery were now tolerated in a place that would not have allowed them to be before. To sum up, Rome’s destruction was induced by legal injustice inside the…

Reasons For The Fall Of Rome

The first main reason reason that Rome fell was because of its economy. The economy was a main issue because of the rising taxes. This led to economic hardship, driving people out of the empire. Another reason that this is an issue is because people had to pay for justice. Poor people were punished more for their crimes, while a rich man was not. All those problems drove people out of here empire, weakening it.…

Western Roman Empire Dbq Analysis

Doc 2. States “Rome’s fall was an inevitable effect of its grand size.” Due to Rome’s enormous extent of land from conquering, they couldn’t keep up the amount of gold and reliable soldiers to maintain roads and routine maintenance. The numerous Roman-ruled countries created the necessity for soldiers and protection to break up any civil wars and stop any foreign barbarians from invading and ruining Roman property. However, many Roman-hired foreign soldiers were disloyal and unfaithful to Rome and there weren’t enough Roman soldiers to protect the borders which allowed for invasions, riots, and revolts to occur. This was also stated in Doc. 2 as “borders became difficult to secure.” To keep the roads in shape for trade, Rome needed a lot of gold, which was never enough. This hurt the economy because lacking the ability to maintain roads meant that they also couldn’t maintain trade. If there wasn’t a large, increasing rate of civilizations and countries being conquered by Roman officials, then Rome would’ve been able to preserve their economy, and drastically decreased the amount of riots and invasions caused by anger and…

Ancient Rome 6.4 Chapter Assessment

The Roman government was very unstable. Military generals and commanders fought among themselves for the throne, and this also led to an untrustworthy army. There was a strong sense of distrust among the army men, and so there was also feelings of loyalty weakening among average citizens as well. In a desperate effort to reconstruct their army, the government employed mercenaries, although these were also not trustworthy because their loyal lied in whoever paid them. Inflation also caused major problems. A drastic drop in the value of money coupled with a rise in prices caused famine and increased poverty, leading to the deaths of many and a significant drop in population. All these problems opened the empire to invading peoples.…

The military in Rome was horrific. Roman citizens were no longer proud to be in the military. The roman government had to pay mercenaries to go fight for them but sadly they would just take the money and never show up to battle. Soldiers who were already fighting would complain about the heavy armor, which led to the government not requiring them to ware helmets and breastplates. This was a lack in discipline for the army because now with the government lifting these rules many men died in battle (Document B). Romans were also invaded by many groups of people and they had no army to help them. This caused many Roman citizens to lose their land. The militaristic power in Rome lacked and now so did Rome.…

The Old Saying: “Two Heads are Better than One.”

Pair programming — some history, technique, and reasons i firmly support it..

I frequently hear people say that they are able to perform their best when they work alone. Also, I understand that some ideas/methods that are advantageous for one person may not be for another. However, I am a firm believer of the phrase that “two heads are better than one.” The two videos below are excellent musical examples of two people working “harmoniously” with great success. The first is Mozart’s “Sonata for Piano Four Hands in D major, K.381/123a” and the second is the four-hands guitar piece “Tico Tico no Fubá” by Zequinha de Abreu:

Music is certainly not the only field where collaboration can be beneficial to a project’s success. Michael P. Farrell, professor of sociology at the University of Buffalo, produced a study of close creative groups in his book “ Collaborative Circles: Friendship Dynamics and Creative Work .” The study looked at the group dynamics in six collaborative circles such as social reformers Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony as well as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and the Inklings. He wrote, “Most of the fragile insights that laid the foundation of a new vision emerged not when the whole group was together, and not when members worked alone, but when they collaborated and responded to one another in pairs.”

There are many times throughout history when collaboration provided the framework for significant results; Monet and Renoir, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Batman and Robin… the list goes on! In fact, over the past thirty-five years, about half of the Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine have gone to scientific partnerships.

In “ Powers of Two: Finding the Essence of Innovation in Creative Pairs ,” Joshua Wolf Shenk quotes an interview in which John Lennon explained that either he or Paul McCartney would “write the good bit, the part that was easy, like ‘I read the news today’ or whatever it was.” One of them would lack inspiration until the other arrived. Lennon followed up with, “I would sing half, and he would be inspired to write the next bit and vice versa.” Anyone can fall into a creative rut from time to time, but it is rare for two people to do so concurrently.

The formal definition of pair programming on Wikipedia states:

Pair programming is an agile software development technique in which two programmers work together at one workstation. One, the driver , writes code while the other, the observer or navigator , reviews each line of code as it is typed in. The two programmers switch roles frequently.

Pair programming is not about taking turns using the computer or having a teacher vs. student approach. A mentoring relationship is quite different from two people working jointly as equals, even if one has significantly more experience. At its core, pair programming is engaging two minds on the same problem so that a solution can be developed more quickly and with higher quality than if one person was working on it alone . With increased quality, benefits will emerge later in the project. It might feel awkward at first, but like other new skills, pair programming takes some time to get used to. Pair programming is somewhat similar to dating; it’s a social skill that will improve with practice. The primary objective is to strive for a cooperative way to function. This includes give and take from each partner regardless of their corporate status. A common opinion for the ideal method to pair program is to sit side by side in front of the monitor, sliding the keyboard back and forth. More on that later…

The structure of pair programming has two roles: driver and navigator.

The driver’s fundamental job is to deal with the details of typing and writing ideas into the computer. However, the driver’s main goal is to be of service to the navigator with trust and support. They should voice their opinion or challenge things if they have questions, but since their primary job is to type the code it can be difficult for them to think several steps ahead. While this requires being comfortable working with an incomplete understanding of the task, it’s usually a more efficient way to work.

On the other hand, the navigator is able to work with a more comprehensive context by cause of not having to type the code. The navigator’s overall goal is to present information for the driver to process with clarity and ease. They should think about the problem with a more conceptual frame of mind. The navigator should promptly give the driver instructions needed to implement with an acceptable level of abstraction so the driver can enter them most efficiently. Because the navigator is thinking about the problem at a higher level of abstraction, they have a sense of the overall task at hand and the direction they want to go.

If the driver has an idea for what to do next while the navigator is directing, the solution is to switch roles. This can help both partners stay in sync with each other. Bouncing ideas off each other while brainstorming will not only decrease mistakes but will also stimulate creativity and workflow. A key characteristic of exceptional pair programmers is knowing when to say “Let’s try your idea first.”

One piece of advice I can give pair programmers is to take a break and ask each other questions. This will help you engage each other in meaningful conversation and encourage a heightened understanding of each other. Breaks are also ideal for passing the keyboard back and forth.

Pairing and Workstation Flow

While researching I found that there are several different strategies for pairing. Some of the possible pairing options can be found here . One of the more interesting approaches I found during my research for this blog is called “ Ping-Pong Pairing .” Essentially, the approach is something like this:

This doesn’t sound like my ideal workflow, but I won’t knock it until I try it.

Something exciting I learned about from a classmate recently is that Atom has a package called Teletype that allows developers to share their workspace with team members and collaborate on code in real time. It’s an advanced screen sharing portal that allows each of the host’s guest to individually type and edit code within the same workspace. As the host moves between files, collaborators follow along with the active tab automatically. I think this is a really cool feature and I will be definitely be testing this out on my next project to see if my team’s productivity can be increased.

Some Benefits:

Some Tips to Remember:

Trading roles “frequently” throughout the day is important. You shouldn’t necessarily set a definitive timer because it can interrupt workflow. Many people suggest that you should be switching roles from just a few minutes to twenty or thirty minutes. Pair rotation can be beneficial. However, if you’re a manager always specifically assigning each pair or choosing selective pairs close to a project’s release are not advised approaches.

“The adjustment period from solo programming to collaborative programming was like eating a hot pepper. The first time you try it, you may not like it because you are not used to it. However the more you eat it, the more you like it.” — Anonymous

The quote above really resonated with me. Furthermore, my initial inspiration for this blog post came from reading The New Yorker’s article “The Friendship That Made Google.” (Check it out! It’s a great read). The article details how Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat became Google’s Senior Fellows — the company’s first and only Level 11 engineers. If the top two engineers at Google were able to successfully change the path for the company as well as the internet as a whole, it leads me to believe there is a significant correlation between pair programming and achieving great heights.

In Closing…

Llewellyn Falco, a successful Agile Programming coach, uses the phrase “ strong-style pair programming .” He says “In order for an idea to go from your head into the computer, it must go through someone else’s hands. This style of programming is all about increasing communication and collaboration.” My primary takeaway from Llewellyn’s blog post is that communication and collaboration are fundamental to success.

Personally, I can say from experience that I am much more productive in a pair or group setting. My background as a musician taught me that I prefer to perform in an ensemble vs. being a solo artist. It’s not that I am relying on the other person (people), but rather, my confidence increases exponentially when I feel somewhat of an obligation to do better than on my own. Also, I am the kind of person that feeds off of other people’s energy. When I pair program, my production rate significantly increases. My current skills have shown me I’m currently a better navigator than a driver, but I plan to focus on being great at both. I hope that after reading this you can see why this type of collaboration is encouraged why it might be beneficial to your future projects.

Two (or More) Heads Are Better Than One for Reasoning and Perceptual Decision-Making

photo of three doctors looking at an x-ray image

Trouche, Sander, and Mercier (2014, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General ) (PDF, 121KB) teased apart argumentation and confidence to determine what drives group reasoning decisions. Participants were given a problem from the Cognitive Reflection Test and had to provide their answer, their confidence in their answer, and a justification for their answer. They were then presented with an argument for either the correct or incorrect answer in written format with no linguistic markers of confidence (e.g., "it is obvious that…"). After reading the argument, they were given the opportunity to change their mind about their own answer.

Participants were significantly more likely to change their answer when their answer was wrong and they were provided with an argument for the correct answer than vice versa, indicating that good arguments lead people to change their minds in the absence of confidence cues. There was no relationship between initial confidence in one's own answer and the likelihood of changing one's mind.

In a subsequent experiment, participants were given a reasoning task individually, and after providing their answer, confidence, and justification, discussed the problem in groups of 3–5 until they reached a consensus. All groups adopted the correct answer if at least one group member solved the problem correctly individually. This was true even when the group member with the correct answer was not the most confident in their answer, or was less confident than the average of his/her peers. Thus, argument quality trumps confidence in group reasoning decisions.

While we typically think of group decisions involving reasoning, groups can also be asked to make perceptual judgments, such as when a team of physicians makes a diagnosis based on an x-ray. In this real-world example, all individuals see all of the perceptual information. However, it may be that group perceptual decisions would be better if the information was distributed among group members, allowing each individual to dedicate maximum focus to a subset of the information.

Barr and Gold (2014, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance ) (PDF, 72KB) tested this possibility in a task where participants had to determine the presence or absence of a luminance signal in visual noise. Groups of 2–4 participants were tested in either a "Full" condition, where the entire stimulus was presented to all group members, or a "Partial" condition, where each group member was shown a unique quadrant of the stimulus. Participants made individual decisions before discussing their decision in their group to reach a consensus.

Full groups outperformed Partial groups, and the difference between Full and Partial groups increased with each additional group member. This suggests that group decision making benefits from sharing redundant information across group members, consistent with known statistical benefits of signal averaging. Interestingly, participants who ultimately made decisions in groups (Partial or Full) performed better on their individual judgments than participants who only completed the task in isolation. Thus, social motivation may lead to improvements in individual performance for those who know they will later be working with others.

Together, these studies confirm the intuition that two heads are better than one, and, reassuringly, this effect is driven by sound argumentation, statistical averaging, and social motivation, not the influence of strong personalities in a group.

Star Active

He opened the jewelry box with one gloved hand, holding steady a slim flashlight with the other. He cursed under his breath. Empty. Again.

Matt Sanders wasn’t used to bad luck. He had become one of the best in his profession because he refused to rely on luck, good or bad. He made his own breaks through meticulous planning and flawless execution. Until this cruise, that philosophy had provided him a handsome livelihood.

He ducked out of the cabin and made his way to the Deep Blue Lounge. He needed to think and to drink. Both of his marks had been perfect: elderly, female, single and rich. He knew their routines better than they did. And yet not even a charm bracelet when he arrived.

No, it wasn’t bad luck he was up against. But it was something equally unfamiliar and disturbing.

It was competition.

“Bourbon. On the rocks,” Matt ordered, seating himself at the bar. He tugged at the Roman collar around his neck in a useless attempt to loosen it. Under normal conditions he’d be mingling right now, nodding his head in feigned understanding at the befuddlements and bedevilments of those made confident enough with booze to approach a priest. The experience was as awful as Dante’s inferno, but it provided a great cover. Tonight, though, he just wanted to be left alone.

“Here you go, Father. Maker’s Mark.” The bartender winked at Matt. “Dave left me a note after his shift yesterday. ‘The good stuff for the priest,’ it said.

Matt smiled weakly and lifted the amber-hued drink in a toast. “To Dave.”

At least someone was on his side, he thought bitterly.

“You still have good taste, I see.”

He knew before he looked who the low, sultry voice belonged to. His breath caught in his throat as he gazed upon the stunning brunette at his side. The last time he had seen her, she had been wearing handcuffs. The burgundy cocktail dress now gracing her slim form was a much-welcomed improvement.

“I’d ask if this was a business or pleasure trip, but I think I know,” she said as she took a lingering look over his black-clad form. “Unless you’ve had a radical conversion along the lines of Saul getting knocked off his horse.” She seated herself gracefully on the stool beside him.

“It’s good to see you, Sabrina. How did –?”

“I got out eight months ago. Good behavior.” She smiled coyly at him. “I was always the good girl, wasn’t I, Matt?”

“Look, Sabrina, I’m sorry about –”

“I didn’t mean it that way. I would have run, too.”

Matt tensed. He was afraid she might still be holding a grudge against him for bailing out that night five years ago on the Red Haired Maiden. Could he have helped it that the widow O’Leary had forgotten her upper bridge and returned to the cabin early? With her burly nephew? Besides, they had agreed early in their relationship that if things got hot, they’d split up, keep their mouths shut, and ride out the heat.

Unfortunately, one of them had gotten burned. Matt had felt some remorse at first, but it quickly faded as other business demanded his attention. He was a professional, after all. As was Sabrina.

It suddenly hit him like a two-ton pickup. Of course! It had been Sabrina all along. The woman to whom he had once entrusted his secrets and his heart. The woman who was the only thief as good as he was.

“It’s you, isn’t it? You’re the one!” He was grinning like a drunken Cheshire cat. “Eight months out and you’re right back in the business. Too bad I didn’t know you were coming. Could’ve gotten you a nun’s habit.” He winked at her before draining his drink.

She regarded him for a few moments with steady green eyes. Matt loved that sense of mystery about her, never quite knowing what she was thinking behind that cool, confident façade. Excitement, coupled with the bourbon, eased his tension as an idea took hold of him.

“Listen, there’s only one night left on the ship. What do you say we do one together? For old time’s sake.” He reached over and stroked her chin. “We did have some good times, remember? And didn’t I always say two heads are better than one?”

Sabrina smiled playfully. “You better watch it, Father Sanders. One of these nice rich ladies might see you flirting and report you to the bishop.”

Relishing the familiar feeling of working again with Sabrina, Matt strode confidently down the corridor to cabin 302. The occupant, a New York publishing house matron, was presently at dinner and, if she kept to her established pattern, would soon be tottering off to the Deep Blue to spend several hours with Jim Beam.

Matt fought the urge to look down the hall to his partner’s lookout position. She seemed like the old Sabrina when she agreed to his scheme, asking the right questions, offering fresh

insights. Still, he couldn’t be sure she was being honest about harboring no resentment toward him. He wondered if he had moved too quickly.

Reaching the cabin, he focused on the task at hand and flipped open his hollowed-out breviary. Experience guided his fingers to the right pick. Within seconds he heard the satisfying click of a compromised lock. He ducked inside . . . and blinked. The glare from the flashlight was blinding. The only problem was, it wasn’t his.

“What the —?” Instinctively, Matt raised his own flashlight. His heart jumped as his circle of light framed the face of Dave, the day-shift bartender, like a ludicrous 1940s film cartoon.

“What are you doing here?” Matt demanded.

“Psst, keep it down. Seems to me you should know what I’m doing, since you’re trying to do it, too, Father .

“But if you’re the other—” A cavalry of bright lights and loud voices interrupted Matt’s struggle to reason.

“Everyone freeze!”

Within seconds, Matt’s arms were pulled forcefully behind his body and cold steel was slammed around first his right wrist, then his left. Two uniformed men rushed over to Dave and similarly greeted him.

Sabrina appeared in the doorway. A ship security I. D. badge hung loosely around her neck from a silver chain.

“You lied to me,” Matt said, defiance in his eyes.

“Now, Matt,” Sabrina cooed, “don’t give me that holier-than-thou attitude. You assumed all on your own that I was still in the business. And technically I am. Just the other side of it. Did I leave that little detail out earlier?”

She walked behind him and tugged on the cuffs. Matt grimaced and then felt her breath close to his ear. “See, while I was sitting in the joint and you were out doing, well, whatever it was you were doing, I had a conversion of sorts. But you know all about those, don’t you, Father?”

Sabrina’s twinkling green eyes drove Matt to whine, “C’mon, babe, it’s him you want,” as he tossed a scornful look at Dave. “I didn’t lift a cent off this ship. Why bother bringing us both in?”

She smiled at him as she twirled her ID around her finger. “Oh, Matt, you of all people should know that two heads are always better than one.”

M.B. Manteufel is a freelance writer with published credits in a variety of print and online magazines. A former federal law enforcement agent, she has always been drawn to things dangerous, deviant, and disturbing. Why do we say "Two heads are better than one."?

Well-known expressions, two heads are better than one..

Having the advice of another person is always helpful.

Background:

It is believed that this proverb traces back as far as 1390 but is first recorded in John Heywood's Book of Proverbs (1546). Heywood was an English dramatist employed at the courts of Henry VIII and his daughter Mary I, but when Elizabeth I came to the throne in 1564, Heywood (a Roman Catholic) was forced to flee to Belgium*, where he stayed for the rest of his life. He was important in the development of English comedy, specifically short comic dialogues known as interludes - but is now best remembered for his book of proverbs. *Biographical sources about Heywood say that 'he fled to Belgium'; by which we assume that he fled to the area now known as Belgium, because at the time most of modern day Belgium was part of the The Spanish Netherlands. Belgium did not become a country in its own right until 1830.

Two Heads Are Better Than One: A Story of Success in a Life with Christ Hardcover – April 9, 2012

Written from the heart of a true Southern gentleman who walks the talk of his faith and beliefs, Two Heads Are Better than One narrates the God-filled life of author Chris Ladd. Inspired by his deep faith and love of Jesus Christ, he has spent his life in service to others. In this memoir, he tells his stories against the backdrop of Jesus Christ—how he brought Christ into his life and how he kept Him number one.

Ladd tells of the problems he faced in growing up in Tennessee and Oklahoma but credits the work of his Christian grandmother in teaching him to do the right thing. He discusses how he discovered the meaning of true faith and how to reach for success in life with Christ . In Two Heads Are Better than One, Ladd asserts that God has a plan for all of us and that no matter what happens, He will see us through if we keep believing.

Through the stories told in this recollection, Ladd shows you how to be ready for the return of Jesus Christ and how to live a life of happiness, peace, and success according to God’s plan.
