Bank PO Descriptive Writing: Evaluation Criteria, Sample Essay, Sample Letter
Most of the major banking recruitment exams such as SBI PO Mains , RBI Grade B , IB PS PO Mains etc. consist of an English Descriptive Writing Section in their recruitment process.

For most of these exams, the descriptive section is qualifying in nature. Due to the nature of this test, it has been the reason for a lot of queries. In this blog post, we would be answering some of these queries of our users. We would be looking at the evaluation criteria of essays and letters. The post will also consist of a sample essay and letter for your reference.
Before, we discuss the evaluation criteria let’s understand the purpose of conducting this exam. This will help you put things in perspective.

Table of Contents
Why is English Descriptive Writing, a part of bank PO recruitment process?
How are letters and essays evaluated, a good (sample) essay: with analysis.
- A Formal (Sample) Letter
A bank job requires continuous interaction with customers, analyzing information and effective communication. These are the exact traits tested by the descriptive writing section.
Essay Writing: It tests you on your ability to organize and structure thoughts & ideas. It requires good writing skills and imagination.
Letter Writing: It tests your ability to put across your thoughts in a succinct manner. It also tests your ability to carry out effective written communication within the organisation.
Although there is no set criteria according to which the descriptive section paper is evaluated, there are some common things that are examined by the evaluator. For most banking exams, the descriptive section is evaluated manually.
Content: The examiner would see whether aspects of the topic have been addressed in the essay and if provided details, examples and explanations are appropriately supporting the candidate’s point of view.
Formal Requirement: As the paper is descriptive in nature there are certain requirements that must be fulfilled by the answers. For letters, the format must be strictly adhered to. Although extra marks might not be awarded for the format/ structure, an absence of it might cause a reduction in your marks. For letter writing, stick to the prescribed formats of formal and informal letters. For essays, make sure the word limit (if any) is not exceeded. Also, make sure that the essay is in paragraph form.
Development, Structure and Coherence: How well the topic has been understood and explained is the main criteria for evaluating any piece of descriptive writing. The examiner sees whether there are any examples given, what is the range of thoughts/ ideas presented and how logically they are penned down. The following might be the few things an examiner is looking for in your piece of writing:-
- Does each paragraph contain just one idea or concept?
- Does the evidence support the writer’s argument?
- Does this paper have a beginning (introduction), a middle (body), and an end (conclusion)?
Post Your Essay | Get It Evaluated By Peers Here
Grammar: This is also a very important criterion. An essay may be logically presented, it may have a variety of ideas, but if the grammar is bad, it makes the entire essay ‘not so good’. Examiners don’t expect complex sentences. Just make sure you create correct and straightforward sentence structures and convey your thoughts effectively.
- Does this paper have proper punctuation?
- Does the author provide complete sentences?
- Does this paper have consistent verb tense, voice, and third-person usage? (essays are generally written in the third person)
Vocabulary & Spelling: Again we would like to clarify that a test taker is not expected to use “high – fi” English words. As long as you have the right word for an idea, that’s good. A simple example of this would be:
- If you want to say “very good”, say “excellent”.
Also, avoid spelling mistakes as they point to a careless attitude.
Here, we would like to mention one important thing: Time Management. Make sure you divide your time as per the weightage of the question. Since an essay has higher marks, allot more time to it.
Post Your Essay, Get It Evaluated By Peers Here
Technology has highly evolved over time. In fact, nowadays almost everybody has some sort of machine at hand, be it computers, cars, or even washing machines. But although machinery was devised to benefit mankind, it has also brought along many flaws to match. [ The topics is introduced and developed in this paragraph. The writer talks about both, the good and the bad aspects. This not only indicates knowledge of the topic but will also help him present a “range of ideas” in the subsequent paragraphs. ]
Firstly, when it comes to technological equipment such as computers, disruption most often arises between the person using the computer, and the household he or she is surrounded by or living with. For example, many old family traditions such as eating meals with your relatives at the dining table seldom take place now that one of the family members might be too busy working on his Mac. laptop. Thus, family values and morals have changed in order to adapt to this technological age.
Secondly, having many kinds of machinery at hand is not only destroying family traditions but is also very harmful to our environment. Many people are careless about allowing their car engines to run haphazardly, or leaving their laptops on for long periods of time, however, they do not seem aware of the fact that all this energy and electricity consumption is dangerous to not only our local environment but to the world as a whole. Additionally, it is the over-usage of machinery, big or small that is bringing our society ever closer to Global Warming, and we must stop.
As mentioned in the introduction, technological equipment was never programmed to damage nature per se, but to help people all around the globe. Now that nuclear families aren’t as closely intact compared to the 1950s or 1990s, technology has given us an alternative method to keep in touch with our relatives, thanks to computer applications such as Skype, or even cell phone applications such as VIBER or WhatsApp. Machinery has most definitely done wonders in our lives, and we as people should be grateful to easily possess cars, and/or phones when poorer countries do not even have the chance to.
In the above three paragraphs, the usage of pointers, such as ‘firstly’ and ‘secondly’ shows the logical cohesiveness of the essay. The writer has developed each supporting point richly by using examples and connected the ideas together so that the essay reads smoothly.
However, with all the advantages machinery has brought to us all, I personally believe that possessing too many cars or phones, or even consuming too much of their energy and battery, is beginning to get out of hand and needs to be controlled.
Note that the writer has also, made a conclusion. This is a very important part of an essay. The entire essay shows proficiency in grammatical structures and vocabulary.

Topic: Essay on Women’s Empowerment (Word Limite: 250 Words)
(introduction of the topic).
Since the first humans arose on Earth, women have been experiencing deprivation of their rights. They lead a hermitic life at home, deprived of the basic rights also, including the right to Vote. Today, we’re addressing the term “Women Empowerment” to talk about supporting, inspiring, and honor women in all areas of life. It also refers to give their due rights and protect them from all kinds of violence. Women empowerment is a way to make a better and stronger society for women.
(Body part of the Essay)
Women account for half of world’s population. Their prosperity and growth are essential for a happy society. Their growth and the economic and social growth of a society, country or the world as a whole are directly proportional. So, when one increases, the other increases and when one goes down the other things also are down. Almost all the bad economies of the World have weak women. Empowered women are not only responsible for a developed family but also a developed Country.
In India all women work but only a few get a monthly salary. As per United Nations-mandated Sustainable Development Goal-5 fact sheets, ‘only 25.4% of women aged 15-49 years who worked in the last 12 months were paid in cash.’ India is looking forward to achieving NFHS Goal-5, which focuses empowering Indian women by 2030. This also highlights the scenario of women’s rights in the country.
(This is how you can cite a study or Data)
In many places, if not everywhere, women are treated as inferior and are thought to be housewives. And only boys are meant to study and earn a livelihood. This mentality promotes the idea to not send girls to school. These people think the girls are not safe in schools and offices, citing crimes against women. But the women who are making news in all the fields are changing the scenario every day.
(Conclusion of the Essay)
Empowering women means, we should promote an equal society eliminate child marriage, dowry system, gender bias and other divisions in India. We can only make a fair and equal society by giving women more power through education. Plus, the government policies and other organizations should work in sync to achieve this righteous and valuable aim.
Note: Usually the Essay part is allots a word limit of 150 Words, but you should be ready to pen a 200 to 250 words.

How Should you Write the SBI PO Essay
Home » How Should you Write the SBI PO Essay
- By Vidya Guru
- In Bank Coaching , Bank Exams , IBPS Coaching , IBPS PO Exams , SBI PO Exam
SBI PO exam is approaching and candidates are gearing up to put their best foot forward. By now you must be aware of the revised SBI PO pattern. This time around the Mains Exam will also have a Descriptive Test apart from a 200 mark Objective Test. The Descriptive Test will have two components: essay writing & letter writing. So, it’s evident that you can score well on this test only if you are good at essay writing. However, you need not worry as the essay writing approach described here by SBI Coaching experts will help you hone your essay writing skills.
At the start, it must be understood that effective essay writing requires a well planned and systematic approach. Such an approach follows the sequence of steps given below-
Understand the Topic :
Read the topic and understand what is expected to be done. Frame a broad outline of the aspects you are going to touch upon. Give adequate time to this task; you don’t want to start out on a wrong note by misjudging the scope of discussion required.
Note Down all the Points :
The moment you are clear about the topic, start thinking of all the points related to its various dimensions. Note down these points quickly. However, while doing so, you need not consider whether you will include each of them (in the final draft) or not. The objective, at this stage, is primarily to generate adequate content so that the essay can be composed comfortably.
Prepare a Structure (Blueprint) :
An essay must have three parts: Introduction, Body & Conclusion. No essay is complete without these parts. It is important here to understand the relevance of these parts in the overall structure of the essay.
(I) Introduction – While writing the introduction, your objective should be to familiarize the reader with the topic and to lay down a foundation on which you will construct the body of the essay. Being at the start of the essay, the introduction must be impressive. Remember that well begun is half done. Therefore, you must choose the words carefully. You can even consider starting with a quotation which is relevant to the topic. Generally a 4 to 5 line paragraph suffices as the introduction.
(II) Body – This part of the essay has the maximum number of words. It is here that you build upon the introduction. Depending on the word limit prescribed, you can decide the number of paragraphs that will comprise the body. Don’t forget to provide the supporting details which reinforce the ideas that you have presented here. The supporting details usually include explanatory arguments, reasons, examples, facts and data which can convince the reader about your point of view.
(III) Conclusion – After having written the body, it is time to sum up the discussion. It is important to note that the conclusion must be in line with the ideas you have expressed earlier. In fact, it must be a logical outcome of the ongoing discussion. It should provide a takeaway to the reader, a sum total of the effort he /she has invested in reading the essay.
Follow the Writing Rules :
Having prepared the structure, you have to now start writing as per it. While writing it is suggested that you follow the rules of effective writing which will help you leave a positive impression on the reader. These rules are-
- Avoid spelling mistakes. You will get penalized for making spelling mistakes.
- Take care of grammatical errors. The chances of grammatical errors get increased if your sentences are lengthy.
- Don’t fall under the misconception that an essay is a display of how strong your vocabulary is. There is no point in using high sounding words just to try impressing the reader.
- There must be a logical flow in the way your essay has been written. There must a seamless transition from one idea to another.
- Avoid verbosity. Your sentences should be crisp, clear and to the point.
- Stick to the word limit. Overshooting the word limit is a mistake; it suggests your inability to express yourself effectively in the given format.
- Only similar ideas can be clubbed together in a paragraph. If you have to bring up a fresh idea into discussion, it is essential to start a new paragraph.
- Don’t introduce any new idea while writing the conclusion. The conclusion should only restate and emphasize the prominent ideas that have been discussed earlier.
- Since the essay has to be written online a final round of proof reading is essential to ensure that no typing mistake is there.
It is seen that while preparing for SBI PO exam most candidates end up studying only for the objective test. Hence, the preparation for essay writing gets neglected somewhere and becomes a problem area. However, you can prevent such a situation from arising by going through this article which contains the experience of experts at the institute for best Bank PO Coaching in Delhi .
