Similarities include class structures, examinations, homework, and social life. They are experienced in both cases but on different levels. On the other hand, differences include workload, guiding principles, freedom, and extent of personal application. The levels of discipline and hard work required in both cases are different because of variances in responsibilities and challenges experienced. In addition, the concept of time management is addressed differently. The transition from high school to college necessitates the embracement of changes that affect relationships, social life, work schedule, and pursuance of passions and hobbies.

The similarities between high school and college are based on the fact that both are stages whose primary goal is to prepare students for future careers in professions of their choice (Cass 35). In that regard, they instill certain skills needed as a student goes through the process of getting an education. Both high school and college have the same class structure that includes homework, discussions, note-taking, and continuous formative assessments that are graded and contribute toward the final grade at the end of the semester (Shulman and Bowen 44).

The length of each session varies and ranges from a few minutes to several hours. Grades are an important aspect of learning in both cases. They reflect a student’s comprehension of learning material and readiness for future academic endeavors (Cass 41). The guiding principle behind joining high school and college is to become more knowledgeable in preparation for the rapidly changing world that is driven by globalization and technological advancements. The courses taken in both cases are similar even though college courses are more advanced (Ricchini and Arndt 57).

For example, the high school offers basic courses in different disciplines while college offers advanced courses. They have a similar structure, utilize similar teaching and evaluation methods, and contributed toward academic advancement (Shulman and Bowen 49). Both stages of learning involve stages of advancement that students go through. As a student advances, responsibilities increase, tasks become more difficult, and the level of application rises. Finally, sports are a core component of life in high school and college. They prepare students who wish to pursue sports as a career.

One of the main differences between high school and college is freedom. In high school students are told what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. Students have little freedom and therefore, they are required to follow rules (Lawn 54). In contrast, college students are responsible for their decisions and actions. College students are adults and as a result, they are held accountable for their behavior. Students make a choice whether to attend class, study for exams, participate in sports, volunteer or join clubs (Shulman and Bowen 53). In high school, attending class is mandatory and students are always told what to do (Lawn 54). On the contrary, college students choose the classes they want to take and do what they want.

Another difference is the atmosphere and social life. The social life in college is vivacious and interesting because of the high population and the variety of activities to engage in (Ricchini and Arndt 68). Students are free to go to bars, social clubs, and join fraternities and sororities. In contrast, the social life of the high school is dull because students can only engage in a limited number of activities. They are not mature enough to participate in certain activities that are legally allowed for adults.

The college environment is also lively because of massive libraries, big classes, numerous social clubs, and advanced research centers (Ricchini and Arndt 70). In high school, these amenities exist but on a smaller scale. Finally, college activities are doe at the national level while high school activities are done at the regional level. College students are exposed to more interesting experiences than high school students.

The modes of learning are different. In high school, teachers check homework, approach students in case they identify weaknesses, write notes on the board, impart knowledge and skills, and monitor class attendance (Lawn 63). In college, professors rarely check assignments, expect students to initiate contact in case they need assistance, lecture, and expect students to write their own notes, require students to think for themselves, and rarely monitor class attendance (Ricchini and Arndt 73). High school students are adults. Therefore, they are required to take responsibility for decisions, actions, and lives.

High school and college are important stages in the education journey. Their primary aim is to impart knowledge and skills and prepare students for future careers. Similarities include class structure, the inclusion of tests and examinations, the use of grades for student evaluation, and the division of disciplines into courses. Differences include social life and environment, different levels of freedom and personal application, learning methods, and accountability. College students are adults. Therefore, they are expected to take full responsibility for their lives. On the contrary, high school students are children and therefore, need guidance, rules, and constant monitoring.

School plays an important role in our lives. Many people will spend more than fifteen years at school in order to get the qualifications that are required to work in a specific field. Those years are broken down into several levels, some of them being more enjoyable than others. Two very important levels that people go through are high school and college. Even though some think that these levels are almost the same, there are significant differences between them. The cost of high school is not the same as the cost of college. Also, some differences apply from an academic point of view. Typically, the social environment also differs from high school to college, which can be related to the question of freedom versus responsibility. High school and college are different in many ways. It is true to say that college is more expensive than high school. Of course, it provides a higher level of education, but that expensive fees make it hard for those that come from low income families. At college you also have to buy books where in high school you borrow them from the school. Paying for education can get expensive, but some people pay even more than imaginable. Some cities do not have colleges, so students that want a higher education have to move away to another city where they can get a higher education. This often involves paying for an apartment , food and transportation. However, the cost is not the only thing to consider when comparing high school to college. As college provides a higher level of education, the amount of homework increases . At high school, where it is more of a general education, the time spent at home doing homework is a lot less. This does not mean that in high school, there is no work; it just means that it is a lot easier in some sense. At college you can also choose from subjects related to your field of study if you desired. There are also some differences between the social environment of students at high school and students at college. Since college students have more work to do at home, they have a limit on the time they can spend outside of school.

As a new freshman, I understand the transition from high school to a big college can be frightening, but you should always have an open mind to new experiences in life. Now that you have entered college, you’re going to have so much independence and opportunities as opposed to when you were in high school. You have the freedom to decide what classes you want to take when to go to class etc. Although with so much freedom it is easy to slip up and cause a mistake which can lead you to get into trouble in the future. You need to recognize why you are in college in the first place for an education that will lead to a career for you. So, with these goals in mind, how you end up is all up to you. You need to be self-motivation in order to be successful.

Studying, in general, is not very fun especially when you are a freshman in college. College is supposed to be the best time of your life with parties and new experiences. As mentioned before in the previous paragraph you are in college for a reason. So, you should properly focus on your academic studies instead. Since you are only going to take a test once and if you fail it. It is going to affect your grades badly. There will always be other parties. In order to succeed in college, you need to have a good balance of schoolwork and fun. You can naturally make a flexible schedule to help balance schoolwork and studying time.

A big college like ASU with thousands of students might make you feel overwhelmed and stressed out. Constantly feeling stressed and overwhelmed by strangers, will make you less likely to make new friends. Even if you feel nervous around strangers or get overwhelmed in large crowds like me. You can always take small steps to make new friends, like introducing yourself to a classmate who sits next to you. Although making new friends is important, they should not distract you from your schoolwork and education.

The final challenging issue to overcome in your first year of college is adjusting to the workload. Many upcoming freshmen are not prepared for the workload they will have in college. Many freshmen will have so much homework and test to study for that they might not have enough time to study for other courses and fall behind. This is a normal experience for every freshman including me. Although this issue can cause you to fall behind which then might lead you to get into trouble. I suggest that you get a head start on certain assignments and also either ask your professor for help or go to the tutoring center. Most professors are nice and friendly and will help you if you are having trouble.

Your first year at college might be challenging for you. However, it is always important to keep an open mind and be positive about your situation. After, almost completing my first year of college. I can tell you from personal experience that at times college can be difficult. How I got through these tough situations is to always remember that quote from John Green “That every year many stupid people graduate from college if they can do it so can you”.

In conclusion, your first year of college will be stressful and difficult at times. However, if you keep an open and positive mind and remember that you have the potential to achieve your goals, I believe that your first year of college will not be hard and will be an enjoyable experience

The college first-year, however, is very jovial and fun, with immense choices and a variant future looming ahead of the individual. The orientation that takes place in the first year of college helps build long-term bonds among classmates.

Another difference between high school and college is that the teachers in college are more experienced than the ones in high school. They usually have prominent and high-ranking designations. The notes are usually not provided; instead, research is to be conducted by the students. Aside from this, in high school, the teachers are there to aid and help students, while in college, the professors are present to enable the students to help themselves.

Social life is also a factor of difference between high school and college. In high school, the parents usually maintain and control the education of the student, while in college, the individual has to balance his social and academic life. In high school, the individual usually makes a choice based on the advice of the parents and the teachers. Usually, parents play a strong role in the choices that are made for the individual. Most high school students originate from the same city or state. Their interests and culture do not vary much from one another. It is easy to approach another student for assistance or social matters. Many even believe that life does not differ from their own. Colleges house students from across the world. Their varying cultures clash; this makes them harder to understand one another. This is advantageous as it provides a necessary lesson in dealing with foreign co-workers, clients or superiors in further life.

High school students usually eat food prepared for them by their parents or guardians. They do not face the necessary decisions about health and diet. However, once students enter college, they must feed themselves. They must familiarize themselves with cooking utensils, groceries, and recipes. The only other alternative for them would be to either eat the greasy and fattening food the college cafeteria has to offer or the lavish and often expensive food served in restaurants located around the campus.

Every September, high school graduates must prepare for the drastic transformation from high school to university. High school is a teaching environment which a student acquires facts and skills. University is a learning environment in which a student must take responsibility for thinking and applying what you have learned. This step in life students will either adjust to or struggle with. High school students are told university life is exciting, unpredictable, and entertaining.

Also, students are informed university life is costly, demanding, and stressful.

In order to adapt to the transition, students must understand and recognize the different teaching styles, testing, and grading. Teaching styles change as class sizes vary. Teachers in High school cover course material in depth and over a long period of time. Professors cover textbook material quickly. High school teachers check homework, remind students of incomplete work, and approach students if assistance is needed.

Professors do not check completed homework and will assume students can complete the same tasks on tests.

Also, students in high school may be awarded a make up test normally without an explanation. Whereas in university, in order to receive a make up test a reasonable explanation must be given.

Review classes are given in high school to help prepare students and give them a clear idea of the material that will be tested. Rarely, are review sessions provided for university students, if they are, professors expect participation from students who attend. Success on tests can be mastered by applying acquired knowledge to new situations or to solve new problems. The grading system becomes very important as students enter university. High school students are used to courses that are usually structured to a “good-faith effort”.

In high school grades are given for most assignments. Students are also given grades for consistently good homework, which may help boost marks when test grades are low. Students who may not have a good overall mark occasionally have the opportunity to complete extra credit projects. Comparing this to university grades on tests and major papers usually provide most of the course grade. Extra credit projects are not normally allowed to raise a grade in a university course.

Therefore, the “good-faith effort” is important in regard to the professor’s willingness to help students achieve good results; it will not substitute for results in the grading process. Adjustment is required for a high school graduate to be successful in university. Before entering university, high school students must be aware of these differences. Therefore, they must know how to adapt to new teaching styles, to successfully prepare themselves for testing, and the changes in grading systems. Recognizing these differences before entering a university can help prepare students for greater success.
