The respiratory system, common mistakes and misconceptions.

  • Physiological respiration and cellular respiration are not the same. People sometimes use the word "respiration" to refer to the process of cellular respiration, which is a cellular process in which carbohydrates are converted into energy. The two are related processes, but they are not the same.
  • We do not breathe in only oxygen or breathe out only carbon dioxide. Often the terms "oxygen" and "air" are used interchangeably. It is true that the air we breathe in has more oxygen than the air we breathe out, and the air we breathe out has more carbon dioxide than the air that we breathe in. However, oxygen is just one of the gases found in the air we breathe. (In fact, the air has more nitrogen than oxygen!)
  • The respiratory system does not work alone in transporting oxygen through the body. The respiratory system works directly with the circulatory system to provide oxygen to the body. Oxygen taken in from the respiratory system moves into blood vessels that then circulate oxygen-rich blood to tissues and cells.

How it works

The functions of the respiratory system are; inhalation and exhalation, External Respiration exchanges gases between the Lungs and the bloodstream, Internal Respiration Exchanges gases between the bloodstream and body tissues and generates sound with speech. The respiratory system includes the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs. The respiratory system has two important functions: it brings oxygen into our bodies, which we need for our cells to live and function properly; and it helps us get rid of carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of cellular function. 

The oblique fissure separates the upper and middle lobe from the lower lobe. The lung has Pleural Membranes; Visceral Pleura attaches to the outer surface of each lung and extends into each of the interlobular fissures. Parietal Pleura lines the inside of the thoracic walls, the thoracic surface of the diaphragm and the lateral portion of the mediastinum. Both pleura are moist, slick surfaced membranes.

The space between the two surfaces is called the pleural cavity. The two surfaces are held together by a thin film of serous fluid. They glide over each other during inspiration and expiration. The left lung is divided into two lobes: the upper and lower lobes that are divided by the oblique fissure. All lobes are divided into segments. There are 10 segments on the right and 8 segments on the left. The function of the lungs is to provide ventilation and respiration. (Egan 10th edition) Ventilation is the process of moving gas into and out of the lungs.

Respiration is the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air and blood and between blood and tissue. The lungs must also protect itself from the numerous contaminants widespread in the environment. The lung and heart must work together to provide the necessary oxygen vital to the body. Another function of the lungs is to remove CO2. Failure of the lung to adequately oxygenate can result in hypoxemia and/or hypoxia. Hypoxemia is decreased oxygen in the blood. Hypoxia is decreased oxygen at the tissue level.

Tissue found in the respiratory system is Pseudostratified Columnar. This tissue can be found in the lining of the air passages of the respiratory system. Stratified squamous epithelium can be found in the anterior portion of nasal cavity, oral cavity, oropharynx and the laryngopharynx. Pseudostratified columnar epithelium can be found in the posterior 2/3 of nasal cavity and the tracheobronchial tree.

Simple cuboidal epithelium can be found in the bronchioles. Simple squamous epithelium can be found in the alveoli and the pulmonary capillaries. (Egan 10th edition) The Respiratory System is divided into 2 parts upper and lower airways. The Upper Airway contains the nose, oral cavity and pharynx. The Function of the upper airway is to conduct air, prevent foreign materials from entering the lower airway and coordinates smell and speech. The function of the nose is to heat, humidity and filter incoming gas, which is the first line of defense.

There are bony protrusions on the lateral walls of the nasal cavity called the superior, middle and inferior nasal turbinates or conchae; the turbinate’s separate the incoming gas into airstreams which increases contact area between inspired air and the warm moist surface of the nose. (Egan 10th edition) The Oral Cavity is composed of a hard and soft palate that forms roof of the mouth; also containing the Uvula, the soft fleshy structure.

Epithelium is stratified squamous epithelium that is nonciliated. The palatine, known as faucial tonsils are located on each side of the oral cavity. These tonsils are lymphatic tissue believed to serve a protective function. Pharynx, which means throat, includes the following; Nasopharynx located posterior to the nasal cavity. It is lined with pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium. The pharyngeal tonsils or adenoids are located in this area.

Oropharynx lies behind the oral cavity. The lingual tonsils lie in this area at the root on the tongue; it is lined with stratified squamous epithelium Laryngopharynx lies between the base of the tongue and the entrance to the esophagus and lies posterior to the epiglottis. This area is lined with stratified squamous epithelium. (Egan 10th edition) The lower airway includes the Larynx, Referred to as the voice box. It is the opening between the trachea and the pharynx. Its function is to conduct air between pharynx and trachea. Protects against aspiration of solid and liquids.

Generates sound for speech. The Larynx is composed of nine cartilages, 3 single cartilages; thyroid, cricoid, and the epiglottis. It also has 3 paired cartilages; arytenoids, corniculates and cuneiform. The cartilages are held in place by ligaments, membranes and muscles. The largest cartilage is the thyroid cartilage (Adam’s apple); it is suspended by the hyoid bone. (Egan 10th edition) The false vocal cords and the true vocal cords are found in the interior of the larynx.

The space between the true vocal cords is termed the rima glottidis or glottis. The subglottic area is the area directly below the glottis and the supraglottic area is the area directly above the glottis.The glottis is the opening of the trachea and is the narrowest portion of the airway (adult). Swelling (edema) at the glottis, subglottic or supraglottic region can cause stridor. Stridor is a high-pitched crowing sound usually heard on inspiration from air traveling through a narrow opening. Stridor is often heard in children with croup or epiglottitis.

The cricothyroid membrane connects the cricoid and thyroid cartilages and is the site for an emergency airway when there is an occlusion above this point. An entrance made into this membrane is called a cricothyrotomy. The vocal cords ability to open and close the airway is essential for generating and releasing high pressure in the lungs needed for coughing. If you place an ET/trach tube you render the cough ineffective because there is no way to seal the airway. The vocal cords are wider apart during inspiration than expiration.

Swelling (edema) of the vocal cords cause increased resistance to breathing. Vocal cord abduction implies the cords are opening or moving away from the midline. Vocal cord adduction implies the cords are moving toward the midline or coming together. (Egan 10th edition) The laryngeal reflex can close the vocal cords inside the larynx which will close the tracheal opening. This is called laryngospasm. This may occur during endotracheal tube removal (extubation), drowning, inhaling noxious substances. Another function of the larynx is the effort closure during exhalation, known as the Valsalva maneuver.

During this maneuver, there is a massive undifferentiated adduction of the laryngeal wall, including both the true and false vocal cords. As a result the larynx is tightly sealed preventing air from escaping during physical work such as lifting, pushing coughing, throat clearing, vomiting, urination, defecation and parturition (giving birth). The Tracheobronchial (TB) Tree is divided into two divisions’ cartilaginous airways and non- cartilaginous airways. Cartilaginous airways which conduct air between environment and the site of gas exchange.

Cartilage is found in the trachea, main stem bronchi, lobar bronchi, segmental bronchi, and sub segmental bronchi. (Egan 10th edition) Non-cartilaginous airways conduct air and are sites of gas exchange; no cartilage is found from the bronchioles down to the alveoli. The TB tree divides in a pattern known as dichotomous branching in which each airway divides into two “daughter” airways. Each division called a bifurcation gives rise to a new generation of airways. (Egan, 10th edition) Gas Exchange of the respiratory system includes functional Units which are respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts and alveolar sacs. There are approximately 300 million alveoli.

Average surface area of the lung is 70-85 square meters. The respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts and alveolar sacs that arise from a single terminal bronchiole are called the primary lobule, parenchyma, or acinus. (Egan, 10th edition) There are many types of respiratory diseases that can be life threating, and also that can effect someone’s everyday respirations. Lung cancer, asthma, pulmonary embolisms, pneumonia, and tuberculosis are just a few diseases that will be discussed. The Respiratory diseases have very noticeable symptoms such as, coughing, palpations, shortness of breath, low oxygen levels, fevers, hemoptysis, fatigue, and many more symptoms.

Lung Cancer also known as “The deadliest form of cancer (Davis, 2017)” is a life threatening disease caused by a tumor on the lungs and the bronchi (Chabner 476). Lung cancer can be caused by smoking, second-hand smoking, also inhaling pollution (Davis, 2017). Some symptoms of lung cancer are pneumonia, bronchitis, and arm and shoulder pain, swelling of the upper body, dyspnea, palpations, and weight loss (Davis, 2017). Asthma is a well know chronic respiratory disease. Individuals with Asthma have difficulty breathing, due to narrow or inflamed airways, also due to excessive mucous that the individual produces (Davis, 2017).

Pneumonia can be caused by viral infection, bacterial infection, or fungi. According to the Tabbers Medical Dictionary ” In the U.S., about 4,500,000 people contract pneumonia each year, and pneumonia is the sixth most common cause of death in the U.S.; (David, 2017).” This informs us that pneumonia can be a deadly disease if it is not treated properly. Individuals with pneumonia have experienced chills, fevers, chest pains, shortness of breath, and coughing (Davis, 2017). Also tuberculosis is a well know respiratory disease.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease that affects the lungs and is known for affecting other organs. Tuberculosis happens when a “bacteria called bacilli invade the lungs, producing small tubercles (Chabner 476)”. Tuberculosis is treated with multiple antibiotics, and can take up to years to fully exit the body (Davis, 2017). Some symptoms that are associated with tuberculosis chronic cough, sputum, fevers, sweats, and weight loss, bone infections, and urinary bleeding (Davis, 2107). The respiratory system is very important to the human anatomy, due to the gases being exchanged. If any respiratory disease goes untreated, it could lead to death.

The human respiratory system is one the crucial facets of a vital and healthy organism. It represents a biological system which includes specific organs, structures, their complicated physiology and cooperation used for the process of respiration in human organism. Due to the respiratory system and its biological processes people can exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between their organism and environment. Most of the people do not realize completely all the importance of respiratory system, its complete schematic view, parts, functions, and details. They breathe constantly and do not think how their respiratory system functions, what the organs comprising it, and its importance to the body as a whole. The process of respiration requires the cooperation and responsibility of other organs in human body, such as nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, alveoli, diaphragm, and lungs, the collaboration of which provides the organism with new supply of oxygen needed to work and function properly. Human personal choices, lifestyle, food choices and environmental influences strongly affect the respiratory system and in most cases, it receives negative effects which lead to disorders, chronic lungs diseases, and deterioration of the overall health. The respiratory system is vital to every human being because it allows air to pass in and out of the human organism. It represents the complicated mechanisms and processes which not only help supply human body with a constant stream of oxygen to stay alive and remove carbon dioxide and other gases but also help transfer energy and support delicate respiratory processes to maintain human life and normal functioning of human organism.

The respiratory system and its organs are responsible for the process breathing, and the system’s primarily function is gas exchange. In other words, respiration is “the act of breathing, namely inhaling (inspiration) oxygen from the atmosphere into the lungs and exhaling (expiration) into the atmosphere carbon dioxide” (Ionescu, 2013, p. 13). On the one side, it is an automatic and repeated process; on the other side, it requires the collaboration of a number of organs and structures in human body. The respiration system has a complex physiology and anatomy. The organs comprising the respiratory system include the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. The respiratory system consists of the two major parts such as the upper airway part which includes the nose, nasal cavity, frontal sinuses, maxillary sinus, larynx, and trachea, and the lower airway part which includes the lungs, bronchi, and the alveoli. Every organ is responsible for its own function and at the same time they closely interact with each other and all work like a whole mechanism through which the air moves down into the lungs.The Respiratory System Essay  Respiration process begins as oxygen enters the organism through the nose, the primarily upper respiratory organ, goes through the nasal cavity where it moistened and humidified. Pharynx is another organ that represents itself a tubular structure which allows air to pass from the mouth to lungs. As oxygen moves down the throat it enters into the larynx, a flexible structure of the respiratory tract. Larynx can regulate the flow of oxygen and protects the trachea from food aspiration. Then the air travels into trachea or windpipe, another component of the respiratory system that connects the larynx to the bronchi of the lungs. The bronchi are the two air passages which carry oxygen from the trachea to the lungs. Lungs are paired, sponge, air-filled organs that ensure the entry of air into the organism and the removal of the carbon dioxide out of the body. Ionescu (2013) explains that in the lungs “the main-stem bronchi divide into smaller bronchi and then into even smaller tubes called bronchioles, which finally end in tiny air sacs called alveoli” (p. 13). At this stage, the diffusion occurs that “allows the oxygen from the alveoli to pass through the alveolar walls into the blood and the carbon dioxide to pass through the capillary walls into the alveoli” (Ionescu, 2013, p. 13). The lungs increase and decrease in volume but do not contradict; the diaphragm is the primarily muscle and its contradiction causes the process of inspiration or inhalation.

The main function of the respiratory system to the body as a whole is to supply the blood with oxygen. As evidence shows, the respiratory system enhances so called gaseous exchange where the oxygen (which humans need to for their cells to function) from the environment is transferred into their bloodstream while carbon dioxide (a waster product of cellular function) is expelled into the air (Tu et al., 2013). Lungs are the primarily organs of the respiratory system that support these gaseous exchanges. The destruction of brain cells may lead to brain damage and fatal consequences. As seen, the respiratory system is one of the most important systems in the body, which possesses one vital function, breathing, to keep humans alive. It helps the body to maintain energy, gas exchange between blood, cells and air, and balance among elements in human organism.The Respiratory System Essay

The respiratory system works with other systems in the body, such as digestive, nervous, circulatory, skeletal, muscular, immune, exocrine and other systems in human organism. The relationships of the respiratory system with other systems in the body help people speak, smell, and move oxygen into the bloodstream and waste out of it. The skeletal system provides structure to the human body and protects internal organs, provides structure to soft tissue in the upper respiratory tract. The interaction of the respiratory system with laryngeal skeleton,nine cartilages located within the larynx, provides people with an ability to speak. The perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone divides the nasal cavity into sides and forms the nasal septum, the wall between the nostrils that separates the nasal passages. The air passes over the vocal cords, small bands of muscle within the larynx, which causes vibration process and sounds, which results in a unique voice for each individual.

The second system that the respiratory system collaborates with is the digestive system. It consists of gastrointestinal tract, an organ system within humans which takes in food, digest it, and expels, and other accessory organs of digestion that include salivary glands, glands that produce saliva, pancreas, a glandular organ locate in the abdominal cavity behind the stomach, liver , a vital organ in humans located in the upper right part below the diaphragm, and gallbladder , an organ located beneath the right lobe of the liver. The respiratory system requires the digestive tract to function because “the muscles of the respiratory system require fuel to work and they receive that from the digestive system” (New Health Advisor, 2014). The respiratory and digestive systems tightly interact and collaborate with each other as the digestive system provides human organism with nutrients and the respiratory system supplies it with oxygen.The Respiratory System Essay

The third system that the respiratory system works with is the nervous system, which controls sensations, movements, thoughts, and other body’s activities. Despite their very different functions, these two systems collaborate in order to identify smells and essences in the environment. The cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone supports the olfactory bulb, a neural structure of the vertebrate forebrain involved in the sense of smell, and the foramina, a group of holes located in the cribiform plate, and provides ways to branches of the olfactory nerves, the first cranial nerves that contains sensory nerve fibers relating to smell. As evidence shows, the lungs possess sensors(nerves that carry or transmit information) and receptors (sensory nerve ending) that react to deflation, inflation, and chemical stimulation, which lead to the activation of the nervous system, “resulting in a neutrally controlled response, like a sudden cough or an altered breathing pattern” (New Health Advisor, 2014). Other systems that work with the respiratory system are the circulatory, immune, and endocrine systems. The circulatory system transfers oxygen, nutrients, and other substances to the body’s cells, supports the transportation of carbon dioxide, and carries away waste products. The effective collaboration of the circulatory and respiratory systems enhances and supports the oxygen-rich blood circulation through the body. Blood travels in and out the lungs through the pulmonary arteries , vessels that transport deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. One more system that interacts with the respiratory system is the immune system that protects the organism against the diseases. Despite their “innocent relationships”, when any foreign patterns enter the respiratory system, the immune system plays a major role and provides protection in the form of lymphocytes (white blood cells in a vertebrate’s immune system) and macrophages (white blood cells that digest and clean the organism from the bacteria, microbes, and dead cells). The last system that collaborates with the respiratory system is the endocrine system, the collection of glands that produce hormones directly in the circulatory system to regulate growth, control metabolism, tissue function, reproduction, sleep, and other processes in the body. These two systems work independently, but at the same time, respiratory system closely interacts with certain organs to support oxygen in the bloodstream.The Respiratory System Essay

The respiratory system has a number of pathologies, infections, and disorders that negatively affect the normal functioning of human organism and cause deterioration of the overall health. The respiratory system’s disorders may include bronchitis, laryngitis, otitis, asthma, pneumonia and many other bacterial or viral infections. Bronchitis is one of the most common respiratory infections, an inflammation of the bronchi caused by irritant particles, such as air pollution, cigarette smoke, viruses, bacteria, or certain infections. Laryngitis is another disease of the lower respiratory tract, an inflammation of larynx which results in voice changes, pain in neck zone, fever, and cough. The causes may include overuse of the vocal cords, viral infections, bacterial infections, allergens, and other irritants. Otitis, a middle air infection, is a painful air disorder mostly common for infants and children, which results in air pain, headache, fever, loss of balance, and diminished hearing. Its causes include bacteria, viruses, flu, allergy, cold, and other respiratory illnesses. Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs, which characterized primarily by inflammation of the alveoli and may result in chest pain, fever, and breathing difficulties. Pneumonias are usually caused by bacteria, viruses, fungal or protozoan infections. Asthma is a serious disorder with “periodic episodes of contractions of bronchial smooth muscle, which restricts air movement” (Vander, et all., 1998). The causes vary from person to person and include the combination of environmental and genetic factors, such as air pollutants, respiratory infections, cold air, smoke, and even strong emotions or stress.

    Breathing me in, I come in through the nose. Quickly, I go through th throat and into a tube. In one of the lungs I go through the bronchi. I get absorb by cell bodies with nutrients and turns into energy. I get used by a human body so they won’t die. The respiratory system makes the heart pump blood and oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange, and exhaled while getting rid of waste.     The steps of the air entering our lungs. First, the air enters our body through our nose or mouth. Next, the air passes through our throat, in our throat there are the pharynx and the larynx (voice box). Finally, air passes into the trachea (strong tube) witch divides into two branches (bronchi). Before the air enters your body it has to go through three steps.      The air is now in the lungs. First, the bronchi leads the air to a air sac called alveoli. Next, the alveoli is surrounded by tiny blood vessels called capillaries. Then, in the capillaries, oxygen in the air enters the blood, in the capillaries carbon dioxide leaves the blood then it enters alveoli. Finally, CO2 is exhaled.     Cellular respiration happens in animal cell in the whole body. First, in the capillaries blood cells absorbs oxygen from the air in the alveoli. Secondly, nutrients and oxygen exits out of the body cell and goes into other body cells. Third, carbon dioxide and HO2 exits from the body cells, then it goes back into the blood cells in the capillaries. To be oxygenated the capillaries takes carbon dioxide-rich cells back to the lungs. In the whole body is where cellular respiration happens.     The body needs oxygen to do things to make it survive. The body need oxygen and nutrients to make energy. Without oxygen the heart won’t pump blood. What else would happen if the heart won’t pump blood?

Frightningly I get sucked into somebodys nose or mouth. Then I get filtered and get warmed up and flow through tubes in your throat than arrive at the at the lungs. Quickly I travel to the trachea and then flow to the aveoli. I am what you breath evryday. The respretory system is important to get you oxegen in your body. The respretory system is what helps you breath. When you breath in air through your mouth or nose it gets filtered and warmed up. Then,the air travels through throat passed the larynx and pharynx. The trachea splits into two branches. Quickly you go through the branches into the aveoli. Lungs are apart of the respretory system.      Cellurlar resperation happens in the lungs of the respretory system. When the air enters the aveoli the oxygen passes through by diffusion. The aveoli is surrounded by capillaries. Blood cells in the capillaries have a little amount of oxygen. Then cells in the capillaries have more carbon dioxide than air,so carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood cells to the air in the aveoli,then carbon dioxide is exhaled out of the organs of the respretory system. Oxygen has to be in your body at all times.     The respretory system helps you get oxygen in your body. It is what helps keep you alive. Seeing people pulute our home is very sad. They are trashing their lungs by smokeing and breahting it out into the air that we breathe. The more this happens the harder it gets to get oxygen in our lungs. We need pure oxygen.
