Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most. – Abraham Lincoln
Everything in life requires discipline. It is the act of obeying rules and following a proper, pre-defined code of conduct. A disciplined person is one who has complete control over his or her actions, mind, body and soul. It is an essential lifelong value that should be inculcated in oneself from the very beginning. Discipline often turns out to be a weighing factor in future life success. It often becomes a way of one’s life where punctuality and systematic approach take a prominent position.
Importance of Discipline
Being disciplined gives us the ability to stay more focused and complete our tasks within the specified time frames and deadlines. We first think and then do any work, instead of merely jumping in. Being disciplined also helps you gain the respect of others. If you are a student, then submitting your homework on time and preparing well for your exams will make you a disciplined student in front of your teachers. If you are an employee, you would always complete your tasks within deadlines and come to your workplace on time. This will gain the respect of your boss as well as your colleagues.
One more advantage of being disciplined is that it helps to keep us healthy and active. A disciplined person always has his or her day mapped out and knows what activities to do at what time. He or she will have a specified time for sleeping, exercising, taking a bath and eating. Disciplined people also tend to have higher self- control. They can control their tongue and never speak out of turn. They are also good at forming healthy and continuing relationships. They know what is harmful to them and hence control themselves from indulging into it, no matter how tempting it looks.
Types of Discipline
There are broadly two types of discipline:
Enforced Discipline: Also known as an induced discipline, this type of control is taught to us by others. Sometimes, even negative techniques like punishment are also given to make people follow and obey rules and laws. This type of discipline can be seen in prisons and classrooms.
Self -Discipline: It is the type of discipline that we follow our self. We develop self-control which showcases our inner strength and values. Being self -disciplined does not mean living a restrictive and limited life. It means getting done what you need to be done by yourself, without getting any outside help. It helps you in taking well-thought decisions, instead of just impulsive ones.
There are numerous ways by which one can achieve self-discipline. First and foremost, one should be aware of his or her weakness. It may be as small as chocolate chip cookies or an addiction towards social media platforms. Knowing your weakness is vital to decide where and in which direction you need to apply self- discipline into. The best way to increase your self -discipline is by removing all temptations and getting rid of distractions.
If you have a report to submit the very next day, keep your mobile phone silent or switched off. If you are trying to lose weight and become fit, then refrain from buying junk food and keep healthier options available at home. Always keep in mind what goal you want to achieve and execute it according to plan. Always keep yourself motivated and energised. Try to have strong willpower as it will give you all the needed determination and perseverance for achieving your objective.
Techniques of Discipline
The first technique is time management . It makes you live your life as per the schedule and teaches you the worth of time. You understand that time waits for no one and hence, finish your activities in the required period. Another technique is the responsibility-based discipline. In this, employees of an organisation are given the responsibility of solving a problem that is being faced by the company.
This gets them to look at alternative plans and actions to be taken up with limited resources and also encourages them to generate superior results. The third one is known as corporal punishment which is a harsher way of disciplining someone. It involves causing physical pain or harm to the other person to get them to behave as desired. This is more often seen in the armed forces and was previously also a part of classrooms.

Essay on Discipline – Types, Principles and Challenges (Essay 9 – 1000 Words )
Introduction:
Discipline is probably one of the most mentioned word you heard while growing up. It never gets old because discipline is required in all stages of life. Being disciplined sounds like a very heavy thing but it is simply the act of obeying the rules set for you as a guide for behaviour. Guides for behaviour are mostly used in schools and organizations. At home, being disciplined is basically following the right thing and displaying acceptable behaviour according to morals. Consequences of indiscipline at school and at home were severe such that children opted to be in their best behaviour. Teachers have a hard task in shaping the behaviour of children and they had to be “bad cops” every time in order to ensure discipline of students. In professional lives, discipline and code of conduct for employees is controlled by leaders and managers. It is really hectic when it comes to discipline in adults because the forms of punishment as consequences of indiscipline are hard to apply on people you respect especially those who are older than you. As a manager, it is important that discipline is maintained.
Types of Discipline:
There are three types of discipline based on behaviour modification. These types of discipline are aimed at correcting misbehavior. Misbehavior is any behaviour that is inappropriate according to the guidelines for behaviour that are set for a specific area.
The first type of discipline is preventive discipline. This type of discipline focuses on preventing certain type of behaviour from being displayed by the subjects. It actually diverts them from misbehaving and cause improvements in that area. It has been used in most schools to prevent absurd behaviour among students due to the restrictions put in place by the guide for behaviour.
The other type is supportive discipline. This type of discipline is aimed at supporting the virtues in an individual like self-control and it helps them get back on track easily. It is supportive through provision of positive feedback to the subjects, showing interest in the activities of the subjects and helping the subjects whenever they have difficulties so as to encourage good behaviour.
The third type of discipline is corrective discipline. This discipline is involved with the problem and deals with it directly. This type of discipline is known to be uncomfortable and intimidating and so people try to avoid sing it. Despite the discomfort and intimidating effects, it is a very effective type because the subject will have to go through the consequences of their misbehavior. It has been used to cease disruptive behaviour among students and its effectiveness has been realized.
Principles of Discipline Management:
Discipline is not just performed by anyone in whichever way they like, it should follow the principles of discipline in order for it to be effective. Discipline should search for a balance between finding disciplinary action and its long term effects. As a parent or a teacher, it is upon you to discipline your child but how you do it matters because the child may end up having feelings of hate towards you, which leads to more inappropriate behaviour. The reason why teachers tend to quit their jobs within the first years of practice is the lack of finding a balance while controlling behaviour of a child.
Another principle is the use of affective approach in discipline. According to the theories by Freud Sigmoid and Carl Rodgers, behaviour, implications of how adults discipline children were felt differently and that is why an effective approach is preferred.
Behavioral approach to discipline is a principle that is vital in controlling behaviour. According to a behaviorist theory by Skinner, there is classical conditioning and operant conditioning, both aimed at controlling behaviour. Through positive and negative reinforcements, behaviour can be corrected and that makes the disciplining act successful.
Cognitive approach to discipline was developed due to the cognitive developmental theories. Controlling behaviour is highly dependent on the cognition because thought processes influence behaviour. Using the psychological approach to change someone’s thinking will result in change of behaviour. This approach works for all ages because cognitive development is for all stages of life.
Challenges Facing Discipline Management:
Management of discipline is affected by factors which challenge the process. One factor is the lack of effective communication. When the guide for behaviour has not clearly been communicated to the subjects, incidences of misbehavior may be noted. It would be inappropriate to discipline the subject because they had no idea it was a wrong thing to do. In order for discipline to be effective, clear communication of the required behaviour should be communicated.
Lack of respect to authority. As time goes by, we realize that respect diminishes especially in schools. In the olden times, teachers received utmost respect from the students, some were even feared. Nowadays, respect has deteriorated and most of the teachers are young. Discipline management in situations where leaders are not respected is sort of impossible.
Economic difficulties also contribute to ineffective discipline managements. Due to increase in population, management of discipline is hard because misbehavior incidences increase due to poverty and discipline management is compromised through these economic hardships. There are also less resources to use in discipline management.
Disruptive behavior of the leader causes ineffective discipline management. Disruptive behaviour of leaders is in the form of lack of interest in the activities of the subjects and the lack of commitment in improving the behaviour of their subjects. Leadership and management roles involve disciplining but that cannot be possible in situations where the leaders and managers lack interest in their subordinates. Leaders and managers should always take part in improving the behaviors and personalities of their subjects so that working with them become easier.
To conclude, discipline is actually the art of shaping behaviour. The management of discipline requires specific regulations through principles to enhance its effectiveness. The challenges facing discipline management are situational and can be avoided. As a leader or a manager, the role of discipline should be under your control at all times in order to gain respect from your subordinates.

At present, no person has time for each other. Parents are also unable to give time to their children due to their job profession due to which their children fall alone. And children take the help of TV, mobile, internet to remove their loneliness.
Children do not know how TV , mobile, and internet are used in work, therefore their opinions remain a threat and the risk of indiscipline. At present, this situation has become even more alarming because the students are falling in the company of parents and teachers due to lack of proper attention.
It is fatal for our country and society. Due to the lack of proper care of students, irritability has increased, and some students have been living in depression due to misery. All this is happening due to indiscipline alone.
Due to not having Discipline, you will have seen that people can easily be instilled in any work. Without being disciplined in them, they begin to oppose without checking the truth of anything.
The form of discipline for the students is that they go to their school regularly, always respect their teachers and implement their sayings, behave well with all the students of the school, stay tuned in love with them.
Always respect older people with you, do not focus your attention while studying, ever study with concentration, respect your parents, and act as you say.
Students should always have patience and patience that comes from discipline because if a student does his work on time, he will always have perseverance and patience if he does not do so, then he would like to settle every task quickly. They will not be able to maintain composure and patience, which will go further and harmful to their life.
Students should always study after being disciplined, if not follow discipline, then some disciplined students join them with them and take them into sinful tendencies, who do not even have the impression of their parents.
And after some time, the students become so disciplined that they leave school and their future gets spoiled, so a good student should always take care of studies and follow the elders’ talk to him.
There is also some degree of circumstances in our country for indiscipline in students because, in most schools in our country, a large number of students are taught in the same room, due to which the teacher is unable to pay attention to all the students.
As a result, half of the students are engaged in bad things, due to which their studies are not done, and the knowledge given by the teacher is not available to them, due to which they become undisciplined.
Students should be taught to remain in discipline from childhood so that they can develop good qualities and be in any difficulty in the future, and going forward; they can make their mark as a successful person.
If the student has to teach to stay in discipline, then, first of all, we have to live in control because the student always learns by looking at it. The students must be sent to an excellent school to read.
The student should be encouraged to participate in sports and competitions as well as studying because all these works create a good personality which is very important for a student.
Parents will also have to give time to their children to teach discipline because nowadays parents only consider sending their children to school and then sending them tuition as their duty due to which children get isolated.
They adopt evil tendencies In today’s age of mobile and technology; parents will have to use at least a mobile at home so that they can give time to their children and make a good future.

Importance of Discipline
“The cost of Discipline is always less than the price of regrets, so self-discipline is always the biggest investment to success in life” who will forget such inspiring breath-stopping inspiring words of 11th president of India- Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. He was the most disciplined person in the world. Countless qualities the man had but it was not of any use if he wasn't disciplined. Frequently he addresses the disciplined quality in the successful people in his speeches. If such an inspirational legendary person described discipline as a key to success, then there must be something in that.
The first thing that every school teacher teaches, every college follows and on which every organization setup runs is Discipline. The school evolved the student in such a way that the student will complete the task within or before the time. This helps him to be a punctual person and without being delayed he will rush towards success. The large multinational companies are set up with certain targets set by their clients. Clients may be the third-party for any project, so he needs to submit the project towards the owner. So, organizations develop their employees with timely submission skills. So that the delays are avoided and the bank charges from the clients are forfeited.
If you want a great example to study discipline, it is soldiers. Soldiers are the most disciplined people in all professions. If they are late the country has to pay the debts to enemies. So, in such a critical job profile they need to maintain their physical and mental strength for fighting in unpredictable times. The high commanders taught them the importance and the techniques to discipline one. So, from the waking time to the good night sleep and from hairstyle to the clothing sense, they all have a disciplined structure.
If the company employees delay every day, the work starts on a delayed time. And this will create a bad impact on the other disciplined mates and the job too. Even the negative vibes will start roaming around the job area. If he is late by an hour, the output of his one hour is deducted from the day and targets are not fulfilled. The next is his dressing sense too. If a person comes to the office with negative casual wearing, this will neither look good nor feel good.
The importance of discipline shows us its effects throughout the day. Even the housewives are disciplined in the handling of home. Waking up too early for tiffins for the kids is the starting task for her and night lullaby is the end of the day. His delay and poor efforts will have an adverse impact on the child and her husband’s day. Discipline is one of the keys to success, and if this key is missing then it's difficult to unlock the door of success. Even if God gives very few chances to open it, we need to be disciplined in presence at the correct time to open it.

Students and Discipline Essay
Discipline is a very important part of life. Discipline implies an orderly manner of living and conducting oneself. It is essential in every sphere of life, whether it is at home or at work. Only a disciplined person can make a success of whatever he engages in. It is a quality that should be inculcated in children right from the beginning. The two most important influences in this regard are the home and the school.
If we look at the students of today. we find a picture of indiscipline. Unlike their ancient counterparts, they lack respect for elders and for their teachers. Their indiscipline is further manifested in dishonesty in examinations. where mass copying has become the order of the day. Invigilators are intimidated at the point of a knife and sometimes even assaulted if they try to perform their duty. This indiscipline is further shown in students going on strike at the slightest provocation and this provocation might be the simplest of reasons such as an increase in the bus fare or the demand for a better canteen and so on. They even go to the extent of taking their anger to the road and stoning and burning buses.
The important point to consider in this state of affairs are the reasons for this growing menace of indiscipline so that a solution can be found to this problem. Now, the two most important influences on the student are his environment at home and at school.
On the home front, parents are to blame to some extent, for pampering the child and giving in to every demand. This causes the child to rebel whenever he is not able to get his way. Again, in most homes, both parents are away at work and have little time to spare for their children, so they feel neglected and turn their minds to mischief.
At the same time, the school also plays a very important role in forming the character of a child. We find that except for missionary schools, no other school has a moral-science class where students are taught basic traits of a good honest life. This, I feel, is a very serious shortcoming of our schools.
Again with the increasing population, the number of students seeking admission to schools is far beyond the number a school can safely admit. Therefore, there is severe overcrowding and the number of students in each class is far beyond what a teacher can happily manage. Thus, it often happens that there is little contact between the teacher and student. Often the teachers do not even know the names of all the students in the class. The absence of rapport between students and teachers makes them quite indifferent to each other. As a result, the student has no incentive to follow the good example of the teacher.
Yet again, the teachers are concerned with teaching the textbook alone and do not relate the lesson taught to its practical application in life – which could be a simple and effective way of teaching students good precepts without appearing to moralize.
Furthermore, teachers too do not have the kind of devotion to duty they should have. They are more concerned about their own family problems and about making side money through tuition or other small-time business activities. They are often quite indifferent if students “bunk” classes and regard it as a free period to be enjoyed. Instead of pointing out to students the wrong they thus indulge in, the teachers by their behavior make it appear like quite an acceptable practice. In such an environment it is little to be wondered about if students misbehave and are indisciplined.
It is important that this situation be rectified as soon as possible. Parents should make the utmost effort to spend more time with their children to guide them and teachers too should take more interest in their work so that students get the kind of education they deserve.
The students of today are going to be the adult citizens of tomorrow and be at the helm of affairs of the nation. Therefore, it is very important to mold them right from the beginning so that they might grow up into responsible, adults and lead the nation to progress and prosperity.

Discipline is the first law of nature. The sun, the moon, the planets, and even tiny insects follow the rule of nature. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The planets move around the sun in a disciplined way. The seasons of the years come one after another in regular turns. If there is no discipline in nature, the world will destroy. Discipline is also found in the human body. Various organs of the body co-operate with one another.
Discipline is very important in student life. If a student does not lead his life in a disciplined way, he will surely fail in life. The nation cannot expect any better thing from him. Student life is the proper time of practicing discipline. It is the time of sowing of future life. So, discipline is essential to student life.
Discipline is very important in every walk of life. To maintain peace and order discipline is the must. Otherwise, chaos and confusion happen. Without it, a house becomes a madhouse. A school, college or university cannot go a single day without discipline. A disciplined nation climbs at the top of success. On the other hand, without discipline, a nation goes towards destruction.
In the long run, it can be said that discipline is a must in all spheres of our life. Without it, our life becomes a life full of sufferings. So, we must be disciplined.
Value Of Discipline E ssay
Discipline Essay & Paragraph – Discipline means subordination to the existing objective rules and laws of the external environment so as to ensure overall harmony among things and their interactions. All creations human or non-human-have to maintain some rules and regulations to match with the entire system with which they interact.
If they did not maintain those rules, there would be anomaly in the system they belong to. And this is equally important for both humans and non-humans. But, fortunately, Nature has automatized the obedience to these rules for the nonhuman world. Therefore, when we talk of discipline, we only concern humans and human institutions. For this purpose, however, examples can be cited from the non-human world.
Every non-human creation of the universe obeys the rules of its own discipline. For example, the earth invariably continuously moves around the sun; the rivers flow up and down; the seasons of the year come one after another; and so on. Likewise, every member of the animal world strictly obeys the rules that it is supposed to obey to be in harmony with the system it interacts with. From these and various other unmentioned examples, we can easily conclude that discipline is imposed on us by nature herself.
If, however, we look at the human world, we also see the existence of such discipline that is imposed on us by nature. But, in addition to it, we have to follow various other sets of rules that are made and followed by ourselves. Such rules prevail in every span of our life. Especially, when we want to move systematically with the current flows of the aggregate activities of the society and, at the same time, want to make any progress, we must create some rules and follow them. Our deliberate subordination of such rules is called discipline.
Discipline helps to manage ourselves: our time, activities, institutions. If, for example, students want to perform well and advance rapidly toward the desired goal of life, they must discipline themselves according to the rules of the school, college, or university he/she reads it. Without discipline, soldiers could not be made soldiers, employees of a company would not work to the fulfillment of the corporate objectives, the streets of the modern cities could not aviod the traffic jam for a moment.
Without discipline one train would unmistakeably collide with another or the airport would no longer remain a safe place for planes to land. In a word, discipline must be there for everyone to work systematically towards the achievement of any goal whatsoever.
It is worth mentioning in this connection that people can be disciplined in two ways-positively and negatively. And accordingly, discipline can be said to be of two types; namely, positive discipline and negative discipline. When people are encouraged to behave in a desired way by providing them incentives or by exposing them to the feeling of achieving something for which they are working or behaving the way they do, we are said to follow a positive disciplinary approach.
When, on the other hand, people are made to behave in a specified way or manner by threatening to penalize or punish them if they did not behave that way, then we are said to follow a negative disciplinary approach. Virtually, in this approach, people are encouraged to behave in a specified manner because they are discouraged to behave in another prohibited manner.
It is to be emphasized that we should follow the positive approach as frequently as possible. But all human beings are not equally amenable to rules and regulations. There are some people who are not actually self-motivated to behave in a specified way. This necessitates the use of negative motivation also. In practice, both of these two methods are applied simultaneously to discipline people.
In conclusion, we must say that discipline virtually controls our whole life. Only discipline can ensure an uninterrupted progress for human beings. Therefore, we need to maintain it in every span of our lives. And what is more important, the best way to do it is by disciplining our selves by our inner impulse. We should always bear in mind that, without it we all would live in a world of chaos.
Essay On Discipline In Life
Discipline Essay & Paragraph – Introduction: Discipline means to obey some rules and regulations. It also implies the subordination of one’s personal will to the control of some superiors and external authority. It is also essential to work in a collective and a co-operative manner.
It is more than ever necessary in the educational institution for young people who are by nature full of high spirits which make them full assertive and impatient of restraint. e Teachings: Rules and directions are meant to fix the hours of work and play the forms of conduct and behavior.
The students should be taught- each is for all, no one for oneself. In other word—the individual must sacrifice his self-will to the demands of corporate life. Unless their natural ebullience or waywardness is held in some sorts of the check, their minds cannot be directed to any purposeful ends. In such a state they may go astray. Hence every educational institution must have a minimum set of rules and regulations.
The Competent figures : All men in society are not competent. Obeying discipline they become so. Hence discipline is to be regarded not as an end but a means to an end. Where initiative is discouraged, originality is satisfied and mechanical conformity to certain codified directions is the be-all and the end-all of life, it is off the mark. But true or real discipline is the voluntary restraint that one accepts in order to enjoy freedom. One who obeys orders is alone fit for commanding others in every sphere of life.
Curse of indiscipline : To regard discipline from a negative standpoint is quite wrong. It does not mean an affair of a mere denial of personal liberty or freedom. But freedom is utmost important for the healthy growth of a youthful mind. The object of discipline is not a denial of freedom but its proper direction and regulation is a must.
Unchartered freedom is likely to degenerate into license. The proper attitude should be to enforce the observance of rules in order that the individual tendencies and whims may not interfere with other works in any way. Rowdyism in the college corridors, disturbances in the classroom, refusal of the library rules, disobedience to the constituted authority etc also affect the general order seriously.
Whatever rules are presented or orders are passed must voluntarily be respected. But to its contrary, or if they are not, they have to be enforced by the authority, if necessary with fine and punishment. Such an action never appears to be accepted with good grace. We know that true or real discipline is also a creative process.
To liberate the mind is its ultimate object. One becomes so habituated of thinking and acting that one can develop an orderly attitude of life by spontaneously accepting a prescribed code of conduct. The enforcement of discipline must be accompanied by a recognition of its proper end. This is not only to act as a check on the errant student but also to be an intelligent guide to correct conduct, The student involved must be persuaded to find that he should not exercise any right himself unless he is at the same time conscious of his duties and responsibilities to others.
In a corporate life and society, it is necessary to subordinate his right in the discharge of his duties. Without strict discipline, an institution may become a madhouse where the members can do anything out of whims. The institution remains full of chaos and confusion and the students are bound to go to the dogs or to lose themselves in course of time. Discipline does not beget them academic certificates but provides them to enjoy a regulated and healthy life.
The Discipline in academic : Today we are passing through a period of acute and undesirable restlessness. Rules and routines in academic life have become too mechanical and often meaningless. What we think today will lead to action tomorrow. We have allowed things to drift for too long.
The society at large is becoming more and more intolerant, even violent. Rational and disciplined order need creating a good atmosphere. Once the realization develops the acceptance of discipline becomes easy and voluntary. It need not be rigid as the discipline in the army, but something easy-going and yet not loose/flexible at all.
Usefulness : Man is born in a disciplined way. But his rearing up needs a strong disciplined place. Academy of any kind teaches the goers discipline. There are some hard and fast rules in the academy. So discipline should be maintained all through one’s academic life. Education without discipline is not perfect. A disciplined academic life leads the nation towards justice, honesty and truthfulness. So perfection can be attained if there is a strong discipline in academic life.
Conclusion: Discipline helps a man lead a perfect life. It saves a man from being corrupted. It teaches a man to live a peaceful life. The world is a cosmos if there is discipline. On the other hand, if there is no discipline, the world becomes chaos. So for smooth run discipline is desirable in every sphere of life.
Discipline essay
Discipline Essay & Paragraph – Introduction : Discipline means to obey some certain rules of nature and society. It has been ensured for men. All objects of nature always go by discipline.
In Public Life: Discipline in public life is a must for leading the nation towards development. It is to speak that the recent outbreak of ‘plague’ and the wrong signals that this limited epidemic sent across the world, was not an act of the Creator as some might like us to believe but the regretful result of unpardonable negligence on the part of civic authorities.
Discipline in public life tries to ensure peace and harmony with all and sundry on earth. It offers impetus to the forces of development, progress, and prosperity. No country under the sun can afford to play duck and drakes with the duty known/called discipline. The steady slide in discipline among elected representatives of people manifest itself more often than not in state legislatures where less light and more heat is generated over issues of public interests.
All talk of equity and social judgment/justice becomes a cry in the wilderness or pompous promise if the power fails to comprehend and carry out the dictates of discipline at all costs and in all situations. With discipline as a way of life, all sorts of plans, policies, and programmes are bound to bear fruits. When people in public life or in private enterprise make a mixture of discipline, aspirations and achievements will go astray or go in vain or nip in the bud.
The woeful way the routine calls of duty and discipline by salaried/paid public servants were given a goodbye is a matter of crying shame for one and all. On the other edge, the heaps of garbage in towns and cities were allowed to get rotten and their removal left to ragpickers speaks volumes of the callous attitudes towards discipline.
Sometimes the drama of the absurd is enacted in such a way as all decency of debate and deliberation are thrown to the winds and only lung power becomes the norm of the proceedings. Defections, floor crossing, abductions etc are a painful painter to the near collapse of discipline in public life.
Importance: Discipline has a great importance in all spheres of life. It is the only route that can escort or lead people to the rightful place among the comity of different nations on earth. With discipline in public life under a cloudy sky, the entire socio-economic momentum is brought to a grinding halt. If there prevails any sadistic approach towards discipline, nothing can come to rescue people from being indisciplined.
Then some bigger calamities may overtake them (people) in near future. The remedy of many ills that are always affecting people today lies not in tall talk but in the restoration of discipline in public life. Discipline for any country like Bangladesh is standing at the threshold of economic breakthrough and a stupendous store of opportunities. Discipline in public life especially for the ruling class and the ruled is an essential ingredient.
Historic events: The historic event focuses on the necessity of discipline in public life. On having been reduced to ashes during the Second World War, now Germany and Japan have become economic giants. Both the countries have come to occupy their present economic supremacy by dint of their unstinged faith in their rules and the ruled in the golden principle of hard work and discipline in their private and public life.
Conclusion: Discipline, in fact, teaches people unity, integrity, responsibility and many other essential things by maintaining law and order. Hence it should be the order in public life with an unswerving attachment to it.
VALUE OF DISCIPLINE ESSAY-2
Discipline Essay & Paragraph – Introduction: Discipline means training of the mind so as to make it accept willingly the control of rules or orders. In short, it is spontaneous obedience to superior authority. It is a valuable lesson to learn.
Real meaning: The real meaning of discipline is to obey some certain rules for a fine life in society. It teaches a man to lead a fine life in accordance with rules without creating any disturbance to others even at the weight of a mustard seed.
Its necessity: Discipline is necessary, in the first place, for one’s moral life. Self-indulgence is a natural temptation (610a) for all men. Our senses seek easy satisfaction. But if we give way to this craving, we will, in course of time, think of nothing but this. It Is an easier path to lead ahead of the life of pleasures like a bed of roses, but ultimately this leads to misery. Therefore we must keep our passion under the fullest check.
We can do this in two ways, – first, we must accept a noble ideal. Man is greater than all animals because man is ready to sacrifice the pleasures of life for a noble cause. Secondly, we must accept the guidance of our respected leaders. To submit to the orders of this leader is no shame. At school, we must submit to the order of the teachers; on the playground of the captain and at home of our superiors. We should remember a wise maxim to maintain it, — “He alone can command who knows how to obey”.
In intellectual life : Discipline is equally necessary for our Intellectual life. This intellect must function under the strict control, Wit is to do any real work. All the intellectuals have felt the necessity of discipline. For example, if a man is unable to fix his attention on any who accepts discipline in the intellectual pursuits, he is sure to achieve some work of noble note”. Discipline is necessary for our spiritual life.
The spiritual activity must be guided According to a system. This is religion. Every religion focuses on discipline. If discipline is not maintained in religious life, life will not be perfectly religious typed. To practice religion discipline is a must.
In spiritual life: Discipline is of supreme importance in the military life — in the battlefield. The order of the commanding officer has to be obeyed, come what may. For the soldiers who march towards the battlefield, the motto is- “There’s not to reason why; there’s not to make reply; there’s but to do and die.”
For the young man who responds to the call of the country, there is the supreme need of subordinating his own impulses and desires to the direction of the leader. After all, to accept discipline is always to be on the road to success. It develops our higher virtues of a higher nature. Self-control, obedience, single-minded devotion to duty, the capacity for self-sacrifice – these are the virtues fostered by a sense of discipline.
In practical life: Discipline is necessary for practical life, lest life should be spoiled. It is not slavery. It may at first appear severely painful but will soon make one used to it. But obedience ‘may have to be rationalized on rare occasions and should not be done by ignoring one’s conscience. It has a higher object in view, The slave shows blind subservience to the master’s will. True discipline lies in a conscious and spontaneous subordination of one’s self to the achievement of some higher purposes.
Conclusion : Discipline must not be mechanical; for man is not a machine. It cannot mean the negation of independent judgment. To accept discipline is by no means very pleasant. It means a surrender of personality that is risky. If we place before us something higher than mere self, discipline will only be willingly but cheerfully accepted. It has an uplifting effect on the character.

Long Essay on Self Discipline and its Importance (600 Words) – Essay 5
‘Ways to Inculcate Self Discipline’
Self-discipline comes naturally to some people while others can achieve it with some effort. The effort made is worth it as it changes life for the better. Self-discipline doesn’t mean one has to be too harsh towards himself/herself. It just means exercising self- control. A person who stays in control has the ability to take charge of his/her actions and reactions.
The below mentioned points can be helpful in inculcating self-discipline:
The first step towards leading a disciplined life is to set goals. Goals give you a clear idea about what needs to be achieved. You must always set a timeline for your goals. This serves as a driving force and motivates you to work hard. It is a good idea to set both short term and long term goals and create a well thought out plan to achieve them.
- Get Rid of Distractions
In this technology- driven world, there are numerous things that can distract us and take charge of our lives. Our mobile phones, television, and chatting apps are some of the new age things that are a big hindrance in practicing self-discipline. No matter how determined we are to study, work or sleep on time, we tend to get distracted at the beep of our phone.
Social media platforms, chatting apps and web series are extremely addictive and hamper work. In order to practice self-discipline, it is important to stay away from these distractions. Put your phone on silent or keep it at a distance when you sit to study or work. Similarly, just put your phone away at bedtime and instead pick a book to read.
Meditation is one of the best ways to channel our energy in the right direction. It helps maintain focus, acquaints us with our inner self and furthers better self- control. It is the stepping stone for a disciplined life. Meditating for half an hour every day can help in inculcating self-discipline.
- Keep a Check on Your Eating Habits
No matter how hard pressed you are to follow your to-do list and accomplish your goals, you may not be able to do so if you are not eating right. Oily, fried and sugary food can drain your energy and make you feel lethargic. Junk food is a hindrance to leading a disciplined life. It is important to eat healthy food to inculcate self-discipline.
- Reward Yourself
Reward yourself for every goal you achieve. This will motivate you to work harder to achieve more. The reward can be anything from watching your favourite movie to going out with your friends. This is a good way to trick your brain to inculcate self-discipline.
- Set a Routine
Those who set a routine and follow it daily lead a more disciplined life. It is suggested to list all the tasks that you require accomplishing in a given day. Write them in the order of their priority, set a timeline for each and act accordingly. This is a good way to lead an organized and disciplined life.
You can inculcate self-discipline only when you are well rested. So, it is essential to sleep for eight hours each night. Maintaining a good sleep cycle is also essential. This means that you should try sleeping and waking up at the same time each day. A power nap during the afternoon can help further.
- Stay Positive
Many people want to inculcate self-discipline but are unable to because they somehow believe that it is difficult to achieve. They feel that it is too much to ask for and that they shall not be able to practice it. This is the wrong approach. You can achieve anything in life if you stay positive and believe in yourself. So, you should stay positive. It is a pre-requisite for inculcating self-discipline.
Achieving self-discipline may be difficult but it is important to lead a healthy personal and professional life. We must thus make some effort to achieve it. The above mentioned points can help in this direction.

I Have a Simple Solution to the College Essay Problem
Time to end this charade, once and for all..
Every year more than a million students use the Common Application, a standardized electronic form accepted by more than 1,000 colleges, to apply to college. And every year since 1976, the Common App, as it’s known, has asked teenagers to write an essay where they reflect on who they are and what they want to be. Now is a good time for college admissions offices to reflect on who they are and what they want the application essay to be.
Some people who work in college admissions are very concerned about students using ChatGPT to write their essays, but colleges should treat this challenge not as an obstacle but as an opportunity to, as the Common App puts it, “ learn from the experience .” Colleges should make the admissions process a lot more straightforward and a little bit fairer by asking students better questions, requiring simpler, shorter answers, and dumping the personal essay
While the intention behind the creation of the personal essay might have been to give students a chance to shine, it took less than a decade for it to congeal into a genre thick with clichés and conventions. By 1986, admissions officers at a national convention were already complaining “about dull essays piling up all around them ” and saying that “if things didn’t liven up, the essay could soon disappear altogether as an admissions tool.” The essay did not disappear, but it also did not liven up.
If anything, essays grew duller. Guidebooks, English teachers, and private college consultants have increasingly taught students to follow a formula that goes something like this: Start with an arresting sentence that leads into an anecdote about some experience that shaped your character. Make sure the story leads to a lesson learned. And do it in 650 words.
It’s a “really difficult” exercise, as a dean of admissions at Princeton University once admitted , “where students are asked to write what makes them unique. No adult is ever asked to do that.” Pretty much no college student is either. The application essay is a one-off that bears little connection to the kind of writing people do at work or in college. Sure, applicants to graduate school usually write a statement of purpose, and job applicants need to write cover letters, but they do not need to tell their “story,” as people—just in relationship to the opportunity at hand.
That’s a phrase you hear often inside the college admissions industrial complex —the essay is your chance to tell “your story.” But perhaps at the age of 17 “your story” is not over yet, and you cannot be reduced to a character in a narrative. One of the worst ideas in college admissions right now is the notion that colleges should be taking character into account in the admissions process. I’m sure that’s going to be wonderful for students, telling them they got rejected on the basis of their character instead of their grades.
This idea that people need to tell their story has become all too familiar from social media and brand marketing, where consultants and business school professors are always telling companies they need a story in order to sell their product. What makes this exercise even worse with the personal essay is that students don’t have a product to sell. They are being told to think of themselves as the product.
Colleges might think that essays help open up opportunities for students, but the opposite could be true. A new study by Taylor K. Odle, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Preston Magouirk, a data scientist at the District of Columbia College Access Program, looked at the nearly 300,000 students who started but never submitted an application through the Common App. They wanted to see if there were any patterns that would explain why a quarter of the people who started an application never sent one to a college. The element most commonly associated with starting but not completing an application—more common than being a first-generation student or living in a low-income neighborhood—was the failure to write an essay.
To be fair, there is something of a chicken and egg thing going on here. Does a student not bother to write an essay because they have decided not to submit an application, or does having to write an essay push them not to submit an application? Odle and Magouirk’s research cannot answer that question, and they are careful to say that they are making no causal claims about the correlations they identified.
It is not hard to imagine that at least some of the students who bailed on the Common Application did so because of the essay. Writing the essay is hard, so it’s no wonder that so many teenagers turn to tired formulas for writing essays and that many of them will likely be turning to ChatGPT this fall to write something like this.
In the midst of a sunny middle school afternoon, I find myself embroiled in a Pokémon battle tournament with my closest friends. The vibrant trading cards sprawl before us, and the excitement in the air is palpable. We’ve all gathered in my backyard, our youthful enthusiasm infusing life into the colorful creatures on our cards. The Pokémon craze has consumed our lives, and today, we’ve decided to settle, once and for all, who among us is the true Pokémon Master. The rules are straightforward: We’ll take turns battling each other, and the winner will claim the illustrious title.
The lessons learned?
As the sun sets on that memorable afternoon, our friendships have weathered a severe test. This middle school Pokémon challenge, marked by cheating and redemption, has left an indelible mark on our lives. It serves as a poignant reminder that honesty, communication, and fair play are guiding principles that continue to shape our journey through the complexities of life.
It’s not great, but it’s not terrible. Which means it’s like almost all college application essays, which do an applicant neither harm nor good in the college admissions process. That’s a fact missed by those who thought that dropping test requirements would give the wealthy a greater advantage in the admissions process by making essays more important . The reality is that researchers and admissions deans have acknowledged that the essay does little to help assess an applicant’s ability to succeed at an institution. The essay’s role in admissions committees’ decisionmaking reflects that common knowledge. A Penn admissions dean once admitted that “maybe one in eight” essays played a role in an admissions decision. A University of Virginia dean put the number at 5 percent, with a majority of those having a negative effect.
Hiring an expensive college consultant , some of whom charge $15,000 or more to help with applications , is one way to make your essay stand out, assuming that the consultant is good at their job. Although companies that outright write the essay in exchange for cash do exist, most college consultants take the ethics of their work very seriously and limit themselves to assisting with identifying topics and editing drafts. Even so—and I say this as a person who has been paid to help students with their application essays—it is very hard to keep a clean line between helping a student with their essay and shaping that essay. In the real world, of course, editors often significantly contribute to a writer’s work. Great writing is often collaborative, but the college application encourages an illusory notion that writing is a product of a single person working in total isolation.
What is most irritating about all the hand-wringing over ChatGPT’s threat to the integrity of the admissions essay is that it assumes the essay ever had much integrity or value. It has always been possible to pay for help on college essays, but as long as the cheating was mostly limited to the rich, it seemed to have been cool with admissions officers.
It’s an idea that lines up with what the writer Emi Nietfeld has suggested is the ulterior motive of the college essay, namely to prop up the mythology of elite universities with stories of individual triumph. “ This narrative of overcoming is especially dangerous because it’s used to justify certain institutions having all of this power ,” Nietfeld says. “It’s used to justify being in such an unequal world.” It allows colleges to believe that they are “solving issues of structural inequality, rather than perpetuating them.”
College applications’ reliance on stories and characters reinforces a fundamental human tendency, known as correspondence bias , which attributes a person’s condition and actions to their character rather than to the situation in which they act. That means a student born with a slew of advantages might look more accomplished than someone who had much more to overcome but doesn’t have the chance to shadow her aunt in the oncology unit or the opportunity to co-author a paper during a summer internship.
Some applicants, especially people of color or those from low-income households, feel compelled to compartmentalize their experience in a story that foregrounds the adversity they have faced and “ put their pain on display ,” as the scholar Aya M. Waller-Bey puts it. For many students, that pain is likely raw and real, but for others it might be largely tactical. “The basic strategy,” one Harvard student bravely confessed , “was to highlight the worst parts of your life to distract admissions officers from the reality that, on the whole, you are very privileged.”
These trauma narratives are likely to become more common as a result of the Students for Fair Admissions decision . While the Supreme Court effectively banned the consideration of racial identity in admissions decisions in June, Chief Justice John Roberts also wrote, “Nothing in this opinion should be construed as prohibiting universities from considering an applicant’s discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise.” It is hard not to interpret that comment as an invitation, if not a demand, to students of color to center their personal essay around their racial identity. Some students will want to do that; only students of color will feel compelled to do that, even if they might prefer to write about punk rock or kombucha . Privilege means getting to write whatever you want, while other students have to think carefully about how they perform their identity.
Some colleges that formerly considered race as one element in their admissions process have found a way around this problem by adding a short question to their application about an applicant’s identity, experiences, and/or communities. Harvard, for example, gives applicants 200 words to answer their new supplemental question: “Harvard has long recognized the importance of enrolling a diverse student body. How will the life experiences that shape who you are today enable you to contribute to Harvard?” While it may be a net win that students are still allowed to talk about how race and identity has shaped them, this question puts the burden for diversity on the shoulders of students of color, who are pressured to present themselves in a way that lets Harvard acknowledge how their racial identity has shaped their experience, even as admissions officers cannot take that identity itself into account.
Figuring out how to answer the diversity question is no small thing to ask a 17-year-old to do. It’s made worse by the fact that Harvard and other highly rejective colleges have done so little themselves to mitigate the harm the Supreme Court decision will do to diversity on campus. They continue to cling to admissions practices , such as legacy preferences, athletic recruitment, and heavy reliance on students from expensive private high schools , that primarily benefit wealthy white applicants. Maybe Harvard needs to explain how it is contributing to diversity.
Add to all these problems the fact that more than 90 percent of undergraduates attend an institution that admits most of its applicants . Why do a million high school students have to go through this painful exercise when it probably will not matter in the end? If everybody can now get a bot to write the essay, and admissions readers at even the most selective colleges do not get much value out of it regardless, why not scrap it altogether?
I have advocated for that position in the past, but conversations with people who work in admission have convinced me that abolition is not the answer. While most essays have little impact on an applicant’s getting into a college, there is that minority for whom it makes a difference. What makes a difference is not really in the story or the writing, however; it’s the revelation of something about an applicant that doesn’t show up anywhere else in the application. Rich students pay consultants to help them write an essay that will impress, but what colleges want are essays that inform.
So here is the very simple answer to all the problems with the admissions essay: stop asking teenagers to tell stories. Get rid of the personal essay and just ask them more straightforward questions that speak to what a college is looking for in a class of students. Limit their answers to 150 words or even less, so there is no room for anecdotes or evocative quotations from F. Scott Fitzgerald or Travis Scott. And make it clear that how applicants express themselves does not matter. If a college cannot come up with these kinds of questions, then it should not ask any.
Lots of colleges already ask more straightforward questions on the Common App, in what are called “supplemental questions,” that tend to ask for factual information rather than narratives. Many colleges use a version of this question from Occidental, which is perfectly fair to ask an applicant: “Why are you applying to Occidental? Why do you think Occidental is the right place for you to pursue your interests?”
Also common is this style of question from Emory, which asks students what they want to study and why: “What academic areas are you interested in exploring at Emory University and why?” You do not need ChatGPT or a consultant to answer that question.
Even better, Emory also asks students to fill out a checklist of the resources they used in the application process, including paid college consultants and essay coaches. All highly selective colleges should be moving in this direction, asking for important contextual information, including whether someone paid for a test prep or academic tutor in high school, in a yes/no format. They could even give applicants space to provide some context on their answers, if they liked.
If colleges limit themselves to asking questions requiring short, factual answers, ChatGPT loses its power, since it does not know a single thing about an applicant. So, too, do expensive college essay consultants, who make most of their money working on essays with students. If an application just asks questions that—perish the thought—students are already prepared to answer, why bother to spend thousands of dollars on an independent educational consultant? With very little effort, highly selective colleges could wipe out one of the most corrupt elements in the admissions process and make it a little bit more fair.

School kids are so violent coming out of the pandemic that they’re sending teachers to the hospital, but an expert says to resist ‘get tough’ approaches

The 2022-23 school year was a particularly violent year for educators .
In Florida, a high school student beat a paraprofessional unconscious . A 15-year-old in Georgia left her teacher with difficulty walking . And a group of students in Texas sent their assistant principal to the hospital after an assault.
Recent headlines suggest the 2023-24 school year may not be much different.
Such violence at school disrupts teaching and learning and has elicited calls to reform school discipline policies .
As a policy researcher who studies school safety and discipline , I have seen two camps form with polarized and politicized views on school discipline . On the one side are those who seek more restorative responses to misconduct that emphasize building relationships with students and discipline policies that keep kids in school. On the other are calls for greater use of exclusionary and punitive practices like suspension.
In my view, making schools safe requires school leaders not to get caught up in this either/or debate. Instead, I believe it requires recognizing a shared goal of safe schools and the need for a comprehensive approach to achieving it.
Behavior and the pandemic
Recent reports suggest these high-profile incidents of violence in schools are part of a general increase in student misconduct over the past couple of years. This contrasts with a decline over the prior decades.
For example, the National Center for Education Statistics found that 84% of public school leaders felt the pandemic negatively affected student behavior. Another survey found two out of three teachers and leaders perceived more student misbehavior in 2021 than in 2019.
Studies have shown that students who feel unsafe going to school have worse attendance rates than those attending schools with less violence and misbehavior. They also score lower on standardized tests , particularly when classroom instruction is disrupted .
What’s more, teachers who experience threats or physical violence from students are more likely to leave their positions , according to a study I co-authored in 2017.
Restorative justice experiences backlash
Over the past couple of decades, states and school districts nationwide have adopted school discipline reforms that prioritize relationships between peers and with teachers, positive incentives for good behavior and prevention of misconduct.
These policies, often implemented as part of restorative justice initiatives , focus on building community and a positive school climate instead of removing kids from school.
But as school violence persists, these restorative justice reforms are being called into question.
In Nevada, teachers union representatives from the Clark County Education Association sought to revise laws to immediately remove students for violence against school staff. The state legislature there passed legislation scaling back restorative justice and making it easier to suspend students. In San Diego, the superintendent promised to revisit restorative discipline policies after parent complaints about student safety. Policy advocates have claimed discipline reform has contributed to school shootings .
While restorative practices and other positive interventions can improve student outcomes , prior research has found many of these less punitive disciplinary reforms to be poorly implemented or less effective than hoped .
In some cases, this has meant students have been allowed to stay in school despite posing a threat to the safety of others.
Suspensions and expulsions aren’t the solution
The limitations of restorative practices have resulted in calls for a return to greater use of suspensions and other punitive discipline. In one of the most high-profile displays, a Florida sheriff announced in front of a jail plans for a return to more punitive discipline, suggesting a need for more use of detentions and suspensions. He lamented that students were no longer afraid of suspensions or having “the cheeks of their a– torn off for not doing right in class.”
In some cases, removing students who are disruptive to the classroom has had positive effects on other students’ achievement . But exclusionary school discipline like suspension and expulsion can have their own unintended consequences on students. For example, suspensions are related to lower academic test scores for those suspended as well as increased delinquency , such as criminal activity and arrest .
Additionally, schools suspend a disproportionately high number of kids who aren’t white – particularly Black students . In addition, males and students with disabilities are more likely to be suspended .
Ultimately, there is little evidence that suspensions and expulsions improve behavior. In fact, a recent national survey found that only 13% of principals agreed that suspensions reduce future misbehavior.
A path forward
Proponents of progressive discipline reform and those advocating for “get-tough,” exclusionary policies share a desire for safe schools. The sheriff speaking in front of the jail as well as his critics both want to prevent kids from ending up incarcerated.
How do policymakers and educators see past these divides to achieve safer schools?
First, it may help to acknowledge that effective school discipline policies can include both restorative and exclusionary practices. It is true that there is a need to reduce the disproportionate use of suspension for minor offenses. But it is also true that students who pose an immediate danger to others may need to be temporarily removed to settings where they can receive additional support.
Next, schools can focus on strengthening their school climate through excellent instruction and positive relationships between students and teachers . Welcoming schools where students are engaged in learning may preempt many behavioral situations .
Finally, policymakers can recognize that school safety is affected by the experiences of students outside of school . Addressing the trauma, violence and social disruptions experienced in homes and neighborhoods through broader public policy holds potential to improve safety inside schools.
All of this takes resources and support for schools, educators and students. I believe these are resources well spent, though, to achieve the shared goal of school safety.

Is Chicago’s shift to restorative justice and fewer school police working? Some say yes.

Youth organizer Maria Paula Degillo used to protest in downtown Chicago against the high rates of suspensions and expulsions for students of color.
Now, she collaborates with Chicago Public Schools to create safe school environments without harsh discipline and over policing.
Today, Degillo, with the group Voices of Youth in Chicago Education, is joining the district’s Chief of Safety and Security Jadine Chou at a City Club of Chicago event to highlight the partnership forged between the district and community organizations over the course of the last decade to improve school safety.
The event comes as Chicago says it has made significant progress disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline. Suspensions have plummeted from nearly 50,000 in 2013-14 to less than 10,000 in 2021-22. And the number of police officers on campus has been more than cut in half .
What’s more, new research released by the University of Chicago Education Lab earlier this month found student arrests dropped at schools where restorative practices were implemented and students said they felt a stronger sense of safety and belonging.
Degillo, Chou, and others who have been working on this issue for more than a decade say Chicago’s approach to school safety could be a blueprint for other schools across the country.
“When we talk about safety in schools,” Degillo said, “it’s about young people and their parents being able to be at the decision making table so that they can decide what they feel makes them safe.”
Chicago makes slow shift to restorative discipline
Chicago’s work to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline started years before national debates around school safety and the presence of police in schools heated up in 2020.
When Chou took the job as safety and security chief 12 years ago, she said she was the first person not from the police department to fill the role.
“It was not easy at first,” she said. “I think a lot of people were stuck in that same paradigm that, you know, if we go to restorative practices, bad things will happen.”
Early in her tenure, the school board approved several changes to the student code of conduct that activists, such as Degillo, pushed: limiting the use of automatic suspensions and redefining what behaviors deserved out-of-school punishment. And the state of Illinois passed legislation , at the urging of groups like VOYCE, to limit the use of suspensions and expulsions in public schools.
During the 2013-14 school year, 22 Chicago high schools and 34 elementary schools began implementing restorative practices focused on building relationships and conflict resolution.
Researchers at the University of Chicago Education Lab studied what happened in the years that followed. In a report issued earlier this month , they found that suspensions declined at schools that implemented restorative justice, student arrests in-school fell by 35%, and out-of-school arrests dropped by 15%.
Anjali Adukia, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and one of the report’s authors, said changing how schools approach student discipline doesn’t happen overnight.
She recalled talking to a teacher who saw restorative practices as “fluffy duffy stuff” that was going to take up too much time. But after trying some of the strategies, the approach made their job easier. That teacher is now a restorative practices coach, Adukia said.
Chou, with CPS, said the research confirmed what she felt she already knew: This was actually working. It also “refutes the myth” that restorative practices lead to “no consequences” and everything being “out of control.”
“The research actually shows that you do good both by keeping children in the classroom through these restorative practices,” Chou said. “And in fact, the climate is calmer.”
Removing police from schools is just one piece of the puzzle
In addition to its work to reduce suspensions and expulsions, Degillo’s organization Voices of Youth in Chicago Education, or VOYCE, was on the forefront of the movement to remove police officers from schools.
This was before a 2019 federal consent decree over the city’s police department pushed the district to rethink the role of police in schools and before the racial unrest in 2020 after the police killing of George Floyd.
Around that time, the district began to collaborate with community organizations, including VOYCE, on an effort known as Whole School Safety . The approach also gave local school councils the ability to vote on whether or not to keep school-based police officers, commonly referred to as SROs.
An initial wave of schools removed police in 2020, but the momentum has slowed more recently, with just two schools voting to remove officers last school year.
In June, the school board approved a $10.3 million contract with the police department to station 57 officers at roughly 40 high schools that have voted to keep them. It’s a fraction of the 140 stationed at district-run high schools in 2019, which cost roughly $33 million that year.
Chicago initially faced some criticism for pushing the decision about whether to keep police in schools down to local communities. But the ground-up approach may prove to be more sustainable, Chou said, noting other districts who removed police in 2020 only to return them more recently.
That was the case in Denver, where the school board voted in 2020 to phase out police from schools only to reverse that decision in a divided vote this past June after a shooting in March at one of the district’s high schools.
Although Degillo said VOYCE would still like to see police removed from schools altogether, she said allowing communities to decide is just as important.
“The goal is to create a process in which people are not relying on knee-jerk reactions to safety, “ Degillo said. “There’s so much more to school safety. The goal is to create that safe, healthy, equitable learning environment.”

The SATs Will Be Different Next Year, and That Could Be a Game-Changer

By Adam Grant
Dr. Grant, a contributing Opinion writer, is an organizational psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He is the author of “ Hidden Potential ” and “ Think Again ,” and the host of the TED podcast “ Re: Thinking .”
A few years ago, I started asking lecture halls filled with students to raise their hands if they had run out of time on the SAT. In each room, nearly every hand went up. I was surprised, but I shouldn’t have been.
For decades, educators have seen speed as a marker of aptitude or mastery, forcing students to scramble to finish tests. But a race against the clock doesn’t measure knowledge or intelligence. It assesses the much narrower skill of how well students reason under stress. As a result, timed tests underestimate the capabilities of countless students.
New evidence shows that although smarter people are faster at solving easy problems, they’re actually slower to finish difficult ones. They’re well aware that haste makes waste, and they don’t want to sacrifice accuracy for speed. You wouldn’t want a surgeon who rushes through a craniectomy, or an accountant who dashes through your taxes. Even for the many jobs in which people are judged on speed, there’s no evidence that doing algebra under time pressure is useful preparation. Although it pays to be quick, it also pays to be determined, disciplined and dependable.
Strangely, though, the tests that define students’ grades and help determine their educational and professional fates are rarely designed for deliberation. They evaluate students as if they’re applying to join a bomb squad or appear on “Jeopardy.” Time pressure rewards students who think fast and shallow — and punishes those who think slow and deep.
One fall, one of our daughters was pleasantly surprised by her grade on a math midterm. Despite being the longest and hardest test of the semester, it was her highest score. At first we were puzzled: She hadn’t changed her study habits or made a quantum leap in understanding. Then we learned that it was the first test where she didn’t feel pressed for time. Her teacher had allowed more time per question than usual.
On math tests , one of the few skills in which boys consistently outperform girls is mental rotation — turning 3-D shapes in their minds. But gender differences vary dramatically based on time pressure. Across several dozen studies , the more time students had to finish tests, the smaller the female disadvantage became. Shifting from short time limits to no time limits — or even just allowing more than 30 seconds per question — was enough to cut the gender gap in half.
It’s well known that the “girls can’t do math” stereotype can cause female students to underperform on math tests. The fear of confirming the stereotype can lead to test anxiety , draining working memory and disrupting cognitive processing. What we’ve overlooked is that time pressure can exacerbate these effects. When girls are distracted by doubts about their abilities, it takes them longer to finish problems. Having to rush leaves them more prone to choosing suboptimal strategies — and to possibly making mistakes. Even if they’re not anxious, female students tend to work more methodically than male students. When they have more time, they can rethink their approaches and double-check their answers. They also become more comfortable making educated guesses.
I tried this out with our daughter on practice tests at home. She’s an honors math student, but when she was under time pressure, she made distracted mistakes like plugging in the wrong formula on relatively easy algebra problems. It was the math version of a typo, and we ended up coining a term for it: a matho. But when there was no time limit, she excelled on difficult algebra problems — and mental rotation, too.
Time pressure doesn’t just underrate the math abilities of girls and young women. Having to hurry can obscure the abilities of anyone who has reason to worry. That might include boys who are expected to underperform in reading , immigrants who are doubted on verbal aptitude and Black students who face a host of questions about their intellect. It also includes students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia and ADHD — or mental health conditions, physical disabilities and sensory impairments.
A common solution to this problem is for schools to offer extended time to accommodate students with disabilities. But lately, this has created an accommodations arms race as parents and students try to game the system to get diagnosed with a learning difficulty or health condition. Why not give everyone enough time to complete the test?
I heard from one counselor in the Northeast whose high school experimented with extended time for final exams. After allotting four hours instead of two, they were bombarded with complaints. Students who had previously met the requirements for special accommodations — and their parents — said they ran out of time. Why? The teachers wrote longer exams to fill the space.
This madness has to end. If a significant portion of the students run out of time, it means the test is too long or the time period is too short. That’s why, as soon as I read about this evidence, I started writing two-hour exams for the three-hour exam period allocated to my class. But many other educators still cling to the fraternity hazing excuse: I had to walk five miles barefoot up a snow-covered hill, so you should suffer too! Most teachers, though, say they’re preparing their students for the pressure they’ll face in standardized tests.
It’s a delicious twist of irony, then, that the lifeboat to rescue us from the tyranny of time pressure is being piloted by the folks behind the mother of all standardized tests. I learned recently that the College Board has redesigned the SAT to minimize time pressure.
Historically, the SAT gave students “too much to cover and not enough time to do it,” the College Board’s chief executive officer, David Coleman, told me. But developing a digital version gave them the opportunity to experiment. And the results were so impressive they decided to stick with them. Starting next year, the test is shorter overall, and most importantly, “on average, 97 percent of students complete all questions in a section with up to seven minutes to spare on each section,” Mr. Coleman said. “It’s time we stop confusing quick with smart.”
This could be game-changing for teachers as well as students. If the dominant standardized test no longer creates time pressure, there’s less need to use a ticking clock on classroom quizzes and exams. I don’t expect students to start looking forward to tests, but they should be less likely to dread them. That will give them a better chance at putting their best foot forward. It will also give them a more realistic preview of what it takes to excel in the future.
In school, timed tests teach kids that success is a sprint. But in life, success is a marathon. Wisdom is less about the speed of thought than the complexity of thinking. The students with the greatest potential aren’t always the ones who can rapidly spit out the right answers. They’re often the ones who take the time to ask the right questions.
