Shopping has always been my way to de-stress from a chaotic life. Lately, I have been all too consumed with my university examinations. All I ever did was wake up, study, eat and sleep. So, when my exams concluded last week, I decided to head out and indulge in some inane shopping.

I had no idea what I wanted to buy, but I headed to the city's most famous street market. It is situated in the city's heart, at the 14th crossroad.

The market is a dream location for a shopping enthusiast like me. The lanes are covered with small shops selling all kinds of material products that you can think of. There is something for everyone- from clothes to decorative material for the house!

The street market is primarily known for its book shops. There are five shops in a row, all selling second-hand books at meager prices.

The yellow foxed pages of old classics have a magic of their own. What's even more remarkable is the annotations on the book's margins. Knowing that someone else read this book and scribbled their thoughts on the side allows me to connect with a stranger. It's an inexplicable feeling.

So, every time I visit this beautiful market, I make sure to stop by one of the book shops and buy at least one hardcover. I bought three books this time and was the happiest while returning home.

I absolutely love visiting this market. It's always bustling with so much energy- both the enthusiastic vendors and the curious customers. It's my comfort place, and I can't wait to go there again!

Describe A Street Market In Your City

I have never been the kind of person who was keen on going to shopping malls and checking out products from high-end brands. They are costly, and I don't find spending in favor of big corporations ideal.

Hence, every time I have to wish to shop, I pick up my bag and run to the nearby street market. It's one of the most famous places in our city. It features vendors who offer everything from clothes, books, and shoes to kitchen crockery and decorative house items. But it is most famous for its street food. There stands a small hawker selling the most delicious snacks or finger-licking food at every corner.

Besides the delicious and spicy food, the market is famous for selling affordable clothes. If you maintain them well, the clothes may even last years. It's better than spending on big brands that already have mammoth earnings.

Going to this street market indeed requires a lot of patience and strength, though. It's always bustling with an energetic crowd, and it's extremely noisy, too. There's always someone stepping on your toes, and it's a struggle to get any vendor to hear you.

Although visiting the street market is straining yet, I never come back empty-handed. I adore this little street market and plan to go back soon!

Are street markets better than shopping malls?

Street markets face tough competition from gigantic shopping malls featuring all the well-renowned brands. Yet, the emotional connection that local vendors can create with the target market is incomparable. Moreover, local vendors often use very sustainable practices instead of big brands, and their products are also of good quality. Hence, I believe spending money to help someone earn a living is always better than investing it in an already established big brand.

Is online shopping better than shopping at a street market?

Both online and offline shopping serve advantages of their own. Online shopping allows you to buy products without ever coming out from the comfort of your house. On the other hand, going to a street market and shopping will allow you to buy more for less. It also offers a chance to explore underrated goods that might not be available online. So, a mix of both shopping styles is perfect, in my opinion.

Big brands vs. street vendors- whose products are better?

The quality of a branded product might be slightly better, but the company ethics can sometimes be questionable. Moreover, they demand quite a hefty price. On the other hand, street market vendors fairly price their products and offer decent quality most of the time.

Are there many street markets in your country?

Yes, there are numerous (very many) street markets all over my country and that’s simply because they’re part of our culture. Street markets have a long history in my beloved country. They’ve been existing even before World War 1. These days, you can always see a street market wherever you go in this country.

Yes, undeniably! You can always see many kinds of street markets, most especially in big cities and some towns where there’s a huge population. Well, I just visited one last week and I bought some hand-made accessories and homemade bread. I actually had so much fun visiting that street market with my friends.

What do people usually buy at the street market?

More often than not (usually) , people buy homemade products like bread, cookies, jam, and the like (etcetera) . They also buy some handicrafts, clothes, and inexpensive electronic devices. In my opinion, buying those stuff from street markets is good because customers are helping small businesses to flourish (prosper; grow) .

Honestly, I’m not sure since I rarely go to a street market. I haven’t had many opportunities to see what people buy at the street markets. I assume they buy cheap food, clothes, or some second-hand (slightly used) items. But again, I’m not sure and I could be wrong.

Do you prefer to go shopping in the shopping mall or on the street market?

I can’t really choose between the two because I love shopping in those places. Well, what I like about the shopping mall is that it has a wide variety of choices. I can buy anything I want and it’s pretty convenient. Shopping at the street markets is incredibly (extremely) fun because I get to discover some valuable things that are cheaper. Besides, I enjoy haggling (to negotiate or bargain) with salesmen which I can’t do in the shopping mall.

Well, obviously, I prefer shopping in the shopping mall simply because almost everything I need is there. Besides, I feel safe inside the mall since there are CCTVs. In case I lost my valuables, I can easily ask for help from the management of that shopping mall. That’s something I can’t do at the street markets.

When was the last time you went to a street market?

Just yesterday! I was so stressed out thinking of this IELTS exam that I needed to divert my attention (distract one’s attention) . I went to the nearest street market in our town and bought some snacks which I’ve brought with me today. I guess after this exam, I’ll drop by (briefly visit a place) at some street markets in this city before I leave home.

It’s been a while, I guess two years ago. That’s when I traveled to Vietnam. I went to one of the street markets in the capital with my friends. We bought some souvenirs and ate some of their street foods. It was actually a memorable (unforgettable) experience.

Do you go to street markets?

Yes, I do. Visiting some street markets is my cup of tea, especially a flea market. I never miss any opportunity to check if there are some collector’s items that I can buy. I’m actually collecting some antiques and most of my collections came from those kinds of markets.

Not at all, I won’t enjoy going to street markets anymore and it’s not safe, especially in our city. I’m afraid of being victimized by pickpockets again. I once had a horrible experience when me and my friends went to a street market in our city to buy some summer dresses. It was me who suggested going to a street market so that I could save some money but I ended up losing my wallet and some important IDs and bank cards.

i.) ANSWER 1: The speaker gave a positive answer and talked about one specific kind of street market. He then talked about his interest in antiques which was one main reason why he paid a visit to some street markets. Notice some topic vocabulary words and collocations he used when answering the question. He expressed his thoughts very well.

ii.) ANSWER 2: The speaker gave a negative answer and simply talked about his bad experience as to why he was not into going to street markets. His way of explaining his negative experience helped him extend his answer a bit more. In that way, he’s able to express his thoughts in English spontaneously.

Why do you think people go to street markets?

I suppose some people want to buy some affordable goods which they can’t purchase in department stores or shops because of the hefty price tag. As you know, most items in street markets are way cheaper than the ones in shops. Also, some people take the opportunity to ask for a bargain since it’s always possible to do such a thing and in that way, they can save a lot.

Honestly, I don’t have any idea why there are plenty of people who prefer street markets over shops or department stores. I assume that they just want to find items that are low-priced but of good quality. Perhaps, they also want to enjoy and have fun seeing a wide range of items sold in street markets. Well actually, it’s really fun going to street markets.

Way (cheaper) – another way to say very cheap

Bargain [noun] – deal; agreement in order to get a discounted price

Assume [verb] – suppose; presume

Wide range of [expression] – a lot of things

i.) ANSWER 1: The speaker didn’t give a general answer instead he gave his supposition as to why people go to street markets. His answer was more focused on talking about prices. That’s one of the easiest ways to answer that question. Simple answer but with good topic vocabulary words!

ii.) ANSWER 2: The speaker gave a very honest answer claiming that he didn’t really know. Here, he just gave his assumption specifically talking about the price and at the same time talking about how fun street markets are. Don’t be afraid to tell the examiner that you do not know but just make sure to express your thoughts more.

When you travel abroad, do you go to street markets?

It’s such a shame to say that I’ve never been abroad, well, if I get the chance to travel or live in a foreign land, I will surely visit one. I want to explore their street markets and see the differences from the street markets here in my country. I think that’ll be fun.

Yes, I do, that’s always a part of my itinerary because for me that’s the best place to interact with the local people. I remember I had a memorable experience in one of the street markets in Chiang Mai in Thailand, I was able to buy some souvenirs and T-shirts at a very affordable price and the saleswoman was very accommodating, she even taught me some practical Thai expressions.

i.) ANSWER 1: The speaker was very honest and used a very good expression at the start of his answer. Since he didn’t have any experience in traveling abroad yet, he used the first conditional tense to express his hope to visit one street market whenever he could get the opportunity. This is a natural and clever way to answer. Using conditional tense surely helps you get a good mark in the criterion, Grammar & Accuracy.

ii.) ANSWER 2: The speaker gave a positive answer and talked about street markets as a part of his itinerary. Also to extend his answer, he talked briefly about his experience in one of the street markets in Thailand. His flexibility in using the English language helps him express his thoughts naturally.

Where is It?

I feel very weird to tell this to anybody, that I become very fascinated by street markets. It gives me a different type of happiness when I go to street markets. Maybe because seeing so many shops with so much stuff and things amaze me. I am very fond of stationery. This is the reason why I stop in front of the stationery shop, every time I see one. I like to stare at and analyze things a lot. This is one of my very old habits that I am not sure how to get rid of. I have a street market near my house, it is just 5 minutes away from my place. Whenever my mom is getting ready to go to the street market, regardless of how busy I am at work I tell her that I will be coming with her.

What can You Buy There?

Street Market around my place is a hub of everything. From vegetables to big showrooms of home decor can be found. It is a very big market, and many times I feel blessed to have a home near such a place where everything is readily available. Now, this is the era of online shopping which is more than convenient but still, there is some doubt that we still hold when we are doing online shopping. These street markets obviate my and my family’s struggle to do online shopping. But yes there is a great difference between the price that we get in the street market and that we get on the online platform. I usually go to the street market to buy vegetables, stationery, and clothes.

What is it Famous For?

This street market is famous for clothes. It has a plethora of shops that offer clothes for different ages, with different styles and also specific to different regions. Not only in my region this street market is famous in the whole state, and people prefer coming to this market from far away places. This is the reason it is crowded most of the time. In winters especially it becomes difficult to keep a foot in the market, because of heavy crowds. In wintertime, I prefer a particular time to go out in the market. It is fun to just go to the market in my free time and check out new things in the store and do window shopping.

How You Felt about It?

I feel blessed to have such a huge market around my place, where I can easily hang out with my friends too. The best part is that I can go to this market whenever I feel like, I don’t have to think about travelling a far distance, in summer it becomes very difficult to go out and sustain in a high temperature. In the summer, all are lazy days so it takes so much energy for me to get ready and plan a trip to a market far away from my place. All these reasons make me elated to have a full-fledged market near my place that has everything from vegetables, clothes to jewellery, home decor, and furniture. It just takes us 5 minutes to get to the market and buy what we want.

My Experience of Visiting a Street Market

A man limped into the stall selling chicken. His ribs were visible, and his, what some would call scraps, had definitely seen better days; they were like paper after it had been rubbed with charcoal, stepped on and tossed in mud. He reached his bony, long fingers, trying to pinch a piece of the Michelin star chicken. If you were going to steal food, you might as well go big. He touched a piece, but his hand was slapped away by one of the customers, and he was pushed back, stumbling onto the wet streets below.

He strayed back to his small perch, resuming his begging endeavor, but to little avail. People were about as likely to give him money as the average limpet is to let go of its rock.

This was not a place for the faint hearted.

The bright and colorful stalls sold a variety of goods, ranging from small rubber ducks to fried squid. It was a haven for the average shopper, cheap goods of all sorts: fresh fish, grilled chicken, umbrellas, slippers.

Coruscating lights flashed from the stalls like a disco, changing color from blue to green to red. It was a hard life for the sellers. Some broke even, others made a small fortune each day, hundreds coming to their stalls. A small family strolled into the market. The children skipped happily, and the parents were smiling. The weather was beautiful, and the sun shone brightly. It was one of the few days where it was warm, but not sweltering.

They sauntered into a stall. Like a landmine, the smell of the succulent chicken blew them away, and left them breathless. They purchased a piece of fried chicken; the sour and spicy taste was intoxicating, like a grenade of lime juice had exploded inside their mouths. They proceeded to walk down the street, looking carefully where they were stepping – lest they trod in dog droppings or step on the tail of a cat, looking to snack on bits of fish that fell from the stalls. Sellers all around were haggling, trying to get the best price for their product, while the customers looked around for the best price, and inspected the products carefully; it was an ecosystem everyone was profiting. Everyone, except maybe the beggar and some of the thieves who were not able to pull a fast one on any of the sellers.

Smelling a street market for the first time is an experience to say the least. The smell of a street market cannot be compared to anything, but if it could there would be nothing closer to the smell than the fumes of fresh fish combined with ignited charcoal and grilled chicken, with a hint sewage water. A slight whiff of raw fish could also have been smelled by the more advanced. Thin, oily smoke rose into the air from the grills, like the smoke that would soon rise from the buildings overhead

A pick-up truck was seen driving into the market. Its paint was chipped, and every time the driver revved the engine, it howled. The engine was dilapidated from the huge load it had to bear daily. Hundreds of kilos of ice and fish delivered every day to sellers at markets all over the city. People moved aside, as it sped across the street, the puddles splashing everywhere. The truck clattered to a halt, and the driver stepped out. He was about 5 foot 7 and walked awkwardly, with a slight limp. He had a small cut on his shin. His oily black hair shone, and his eyes were red. Grabbing a bucket, he shoveled fish into one of the stalls. The ice rattled and quite a lot fell on the floor. It slowly melted.

Street markets are really interesting in any country you go to. With a variety of goods and different kinds of local as well as international cuisines, they have a charm of their own. Therefore, in this cue card, you get an opportunity to share your experience of a street market you have been to. Try practising for IELTS Speaking with the Part 1 questions given below.

Speaking Part 1

1 are there many street markets in your country.

Absolutely! Street food and markets are a huge part of my culture. Many, no matter rich or poor, go to the streets in the morning to pick up the freshest produce from the street vendors. The thing is that the street produce is the best quality and price! You simply cannot find fish or crabs straight out of (directly) the water onto your plate in a supermarket.

2 Do you like going to street markets?

I love it! I love the whole experience of seeing people selling their products, as well as I believe that the freshest produce comes from there. I would much rather go to a street market than a large name brand supermarket, where the produce is treated with pesticides and other chemicals to keep it from perishing.

3 What do street markets sell?

I’d say the most common items are fresh fruits and vegetables, maybe even meats or fish as well. However, the farmer’s markets in my town tend to only sell fruits, vegetables, and local products such as honey from their bee farming.

4. Do you think people like street markets?

Definitely. No matter what your economic status (how much money you have) is, there is always something for you. Moreover, our street markets are famed for freshness and quality at the lowest prices, so why would dislike that? On the other hand, some people fear being ripped off (being charged a higher price) , so they avoid the street markets.

5. What is the difference between street markets and supermarkets?

Street markets have fresher products and usually involve local people or farmers coming to sell their products, whereas supermarkets sell more commercialized products. Although street market food may be tasty and fresh, supermarket food can be safer since they have tighter restrictions from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) .

Yes, I often visit the street market for two reasons. Firstly more daily necessities like groceries, vegetables, and household goods. Secondly, whenever I feel like not cooking at home, I go to the local street market to taste the mouth-watering delicacies served by the food vendors.

Also, we can buy all kinds of fruits and vegetables here.
Some markets open on a daily basis.
However, there are others which open only on a weekly schedule.
Villagers flock to the market to sell their chickens, ducks and pigeons.
Furthermore, people also set up food stalls in the market.
Apart from spices and condiments, visitors can purchase clothes, utensils and furniture in a market.
Also, hobbyists go to a market to collect essential items for their respective hobbies.

A Visit to a Market Paragraph

Last Sunday, I accompanied my father to a weekly market in the outskirts of our town. He parked the car on the side of the street.

Next, we climbed out with four large-sized bags. I was excited because my father would be buying a lot of stuff for a dinner party in our house the following night.

To begin with, we stopped to buy vegetables. Honestly speaking, I was astounded to see pumpkins of various shapes and sizes! My father bought a dozen of them.

Cabbages, cauliflowers, potatoes, onions and lemons were also picked. Later, we purchased curd and cheese. We also stopped to have tea and snacks. Finally, while making our way out of the market, my father bought me an ice-cream.

How do you describe a market place?

A market place is an area where different kinds of business activities occur. Additionally, it’s a place where folks who are interested in selling articles come.

At the same time, buyers visit this area to make their purchases. A market place gets crowded during festive occasions. There is more din and hustle during these times.

People go to the market place to buy fish and poultry. Besides, they also get their dairy products from here. Furthermore, all kinds of sweets and snacks are available for sale at a market place.

A Visit to a Market Essay For Class 9

Yesterday, I had to go to the market although the weather was quite gloomy. We had just got back from a month long tour. Therefore, our pantry was empty.

We hardly had anything to eat. Mother said that I needed to collect some food items immediately. Honestly, I was feeling tired after our long trip out of the state.

Therefore, I was not in the mood to go out. Yet, I did. There wasn’t any other option for me. A couple of guests would be staying with us for a night or two. Furthermore, to make matters worse, father wasn’t at home that day.

It was raining by the time I got dressed. Hurriedly, I grabbed my wallet, phone and a shopping bag. Next, I fetched out a large black umbrella.

Honestly, going to a market in pouring rain is not fun. Luckily enough, I caught sight of my neighbor next door getting ready to visit the market too.

She is an elderly lady who lives all by herself. My neighbor was pulling out her car from the garage. On seeing me, she offered to give me a lift. I have never felt more relieved! Needless to say, I accepted her offer instantly.

Once, we reached the market, the first thing that my neighbor Mrs. Singh purchased was a colorful umbrella. Next, I hurriedly collected bread, eggs, vegetables, rice and lentils. My companion said that she wanted to have some hot drink. I guided her towards a small coffee shop.

We had coffee with pastry and vegetable rolls. I bought some pastry and rolls for my home. On second thought, I bought some for Mrs. Singh as well. My gesture took her by surprise. However, she accepted gratefully and seemed delighted!

The rain had stopped by the time we got back home. That evening, my mother invited Mrs. Singh to have dinner with us. Had it not been for this kind lady, my shopping experience in the torrential downpour would have been a rather unpleasant one.

A Visit to the Market Essay for Class 10

Every weekend, I make a trip to the market. Sometimes my parents and siblings go with me. However, on other occasions I go alone.

Additionally, I enjoy visiting the market with my friends. Last weekend three of my school friends accompanied me when I visited the market. My parents and younger brother and sister were also with us.

The reason why my friends came with my family is because my parents wanted to buy them some gifts for Diwali. My friends often visit my home on holidays.

Consequently, they have grown quite close to my parents. My mother wanted to buy new evening gowns for my class-mates Sarla, Maya and Preeti. My father wanted to get them some sports equipment. Therefore, all were rather excited about the visit to the market.

We arrived in the market in the early hours of the afternoon. There wasn’t a rush at that time. Therefore, we were relieved.

At first my father collected the regular groceries and dropped them into the back of our car which was parked outside. Next, we walked into a fancy-looking cloth store. My friends selected their gowns. Maya chose one in velvet while the other two girls selected satin.

Next, we visited a shop which deals in sports items. Our father bought new badminton and table tennis rackets for all of us.

Furthermore, he bought a cricket bat and ball for my younger brother. We also visited an ice-cream shop. Thereafter, we went around checking out all the lovely items which were on display in various areas of the market.

My mother insisted that father should get a couple of new shirts for himself. Consequently, further purchases were made.

My sister wanted some silk thread for her embroidery classes. Besides, my brother asked for some new pastel colors and paint brushes.

It was pitch dark by the time we returned home. Our cook Sylvia prepared chilly chicken and fried rice for all of us. This was a memorable visit for me because, for the first time, my family got the chance to take my friends out for shopping.

IELTS TOPIC: Buying Something From a Street Market

Things to consider:

Be careful in this topic. The topic is about describing a market and not an item. It's easy to get confused and talk only about an item.
When we talk about a market there are two things to consider and discuss - the products it sells and the atmosphere in that market. Here are some examples:

Products - vegetables, fruit, crafts, souvenirs, homemade gifts, homecooked food, second-hand items, sea food and fish, etc.

Atmosphere - lively, noisy, crowded, messy, a little dirty, busy, bustling, people shouting, kids running around, etc.

Don't be afraid to express positive or negative (or both) feelings. You can say things like:

I love the atmosphere and the freshness of the products, although I dislike the bargaining.

Part 2: Sample Answer

Alright, I have visited many of these outdoor markets, from typical farmer’s markets where I buy vegetables, to flea markets where I can see many curious little gadgets , toys, knock-off clothes or shoes and many snacks. I’ve even been to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey , which is one of the most famous markets in the whole world. However, I’ll tell you about my favorite market, one that I’ll never forget and will always try to visit – the Christmas market in Germany.

I introduce some types of markets that I've visited.

This is not one market in particular , but instead , it’s a whole cultural tradition . Every winter, a week before and a week after Christmas, Germany (and other countries) will set up Christmas-themed markets in every large city. These are usually in the city center and look like festively decorated small wooden houses that sell all sorts of amazing foods , snacks , gifts , souvenirs and homemade crafts .

I describe the market I want to talk about.

This is probably the most amazing time of the year in Europe. I highly recommend you and anyone else to visit at that time . I remember I went there a few years in a row . I usually stayed in Frankfurt city , with a few friends. We would wake up late morning or early afternoon and go to the market. In Frankfurt, the market is huge , and it’ll take you a few hours to go around, especially if you stop and try stuff. They will build a small amusement park with rides in the middle of the city, and hundreds of wooden houses . Every time we go there, we go for two important things – mulled wine and meat , all sorts of German sausages , barbecue ribs , steaks , hotdogs , you name it. They have it all. It’s like a food fiesta , or a food festival .

I give details about what you can see and buy over there.

My feelings about this outdoor market are simply wonderful . For me, this is one of the fondest memories of my teenage years . I can almost taste all the fantastic food , and all the mulled wine , which is a specialty and you can get… many many cups of . It is a hot , flavored red wine with a fruity taste . It is simply fantastic . I can’t wait to go and visit that market again in the future. It’s totally worth it.

Different countries have different views on markets and things sold over there, however , from my experience , there are still many types of food markets around the world. The most common are farmer's markets and sea food markets (also called wet markets ). These can be seen in almost every country. Some of them are outside and some are indoor , but they do exist. These markets are probably the best place to find fresh food and ingredients for your daily cooking.

These are more rare, but still can be found in different places around the world. There are small antique markets , where vendors can sell rare , or very old items like coins , stamps , knifes , and other home decorations from the 60-ties, 70-ties, and 80-ties . Other types of item markets are flea markets or pop-up markets . These can be organized between people (even online) and can pop-up at some street (usually on weekends). There you can find all kinds of homemade products , cheap tools, daily necessities and knock-off clothes . Ananas and Dike anyone?

There are quite a few kinds of markets in China. For example, there are many farmer’s markets . These are usually close to some of the big neighborhoods and provide fresh vegetables and fruits every morning. You have to see them . It’s a whole experience going to those wet markets . As China is next to an ocean , you can find all sorts of interesting colorful sea animals on the market like clams, different types of fishes , different types of squid or octopus and even some more rare animals like sharks or sweet water turtles . There is real evidence that outdoor markets ( especially the small ones) will disappear. They simply can't pay the increasing costs of selling outside, and can't compete with the huge supermarket chains who sell everything half the price of those selling outdoor. Unfortunately , many of these small markets get closed down these days.

If No then...

If you believe markets will continue to exist in some form , then you could say that markets, especially farmer's markets and wet markets are part of a country's culture . As a cultural phenomenon , these markets should be protected and there should be areas given to people who want to sell goods and crafts in every city. If we protect these areas, and support them with funds , then those markets won't disappear.

Online shopping.

Of course, one of the biggest changes the last 10 years has been online shopping . Nowadays, people sit on their mobile phones or computer screens and scroll through thousands of products, until finally they get their desired item . People spend a lot of time online, and a lot of that time is spent shopping for clothes, home equipment and daily life improvements .

Buying Patterns

Buying has changed a lot, these days, but something else that has changed is what we actually buy. Because we get so influenced by social media and celebrities or influencers , we tend to choose too many expensive, high-end products and brands like Apple , Samsung , Gucci and LV . What's more, people, and especially young people, always want the newest and freshest product from those brands. It is very expensive to be a modern and fashionable young person.

A market place is a very busy place where people go to buy articles of their needs. It is a centre of attraction for both buyers and sellers. There is no other place in the area having so much brisk business as the market.

I always find a big crowd there. There are several shops, all decorated beautifully. Big shops look more attractive. Businessmen come here from far and wide for purchasing or selling their products. The market is always crowded with carts, horses, donkeys and camels. They come loaded with the produce of the season such as cotton, grain, oil seeds, vegetables, etc.

Whenever I visit a market I find the hawkers shouting loudly to sell their goods. They try to attract the people by several names. Generally they sing songs in praise of their goods. They face hard competition because there are several hawkers selling the same article.

As the prices of the items are not fixed, the hawkers as well as the buyers do bargain. I watch these people who feel greatly satisfied after purchasing a thing at a minimum price from the hawkers.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

The market is at peak in the evening. There is not a single shop where a big crowd is not seen. Everyone seems to be in hurry. There are jewellery shops which shine brightly in the light. Cloth shops and ready-made garment shops do great business during a festival.

The hotels and restaurants are also crowded with people. Some people are seen with plates of ‘chat’ others are seen enjoying cold drinks. There is flavour of all kinds in the surrounding area. It is very difficult to drive a car in a market place.

What to talk of a car or a motorcycle sometimes it becomes difficult even to walk. On the occasion of festivals like Diwali, Dussehra and Holi the situation becomes worse. It seems all the population of the country is on the road. There is great hustle and bustle. In between the cars and motorcycles, we see those carrying different articles for sale. They create great problems as sometimes they bring the traffic at a halt resulting in loud horns from the car-drivers.

The market is really a very noisy place. One can meet all sorts of people there. There is joy and laughter on all sides. Friends welcome one another and enjoy fast foods. Some people are seen discussing politics in the light of their business.

Our markets are quite different from the markets of the western advanced countries. Our markets present a rural glimpse and fill us with a feeling that we belong to India whose soul lies in villages. It is really very pleasant to move in a market, particularly in the evening.

I always welcome those moments when I visit the market for this purpose or that. It is a place where one can see the life in so many colours. One can get valuable experiences too by visiting market and buying different commodities.

Introducing a street market

Every neighbourhood has a central place where the residents can go and shop for their needs. Similarly in my city, we’ve Town square .. which is quite popular among the foodies .

Where is it?

Town square market is located at the heart of Sector – 15, Pune in Maharashtra. Due to its proximity to the national highway, it can easily be accessed through public or private transport. Although, sometimes traffic may frustrate you but still it doesn’t dampen the spirit of visiting the market.

What can you buy from there?

If we talk about the market, it’s mainly a street food junction and offers plenty of dishes for people of all tastes. In addition, It also has two multi-retail grocery stores and they serve almost every daily need of the residents.

What is it famous for?

Largely Town square is famous for the Vada Pav – a native fast food dish of Maharashtra. You won’t believe, I’ve seen people coming from places like Goa and Gujarat which are miles away, just to witness the delicacy of Maharashtrian Vada pav. Also, The special weekend discounts on the grocery stores are quite popular among the community and as such people rush to buy household items during these days.

How you feel about it?

I feel Town square is not just a market, it’s the very basic reason why residents of my city always remain united and joyful. Apart from eating food or doing shopping, it gives us a chance to meet new people and grow our ties within the city.

In the end I’d just say that….Shopping is primarily a human activity and Street markets are its core. I’m glad that my city has such a wonderful street marketplace .

Primarily, Branded products are perceived to be the symbols of quality . People wish to buy them because they are perfect, long-lasting and having good post-sales service.

Mostly they’re a hoax , I believe. In most of the so called large discounts advertisements, there’s a thing written at the bottom called T&C apply . When you read all the terms and conditions of the discount, you’ll hardly find anything discounted.

The script is standard: Avoid talking about the specifics of the allegations and attest to the accused’s character, implying either that the victims are lying or the actual crime wasn’t that bad.

How to navigate the Moscow Metro – a brief guide

The Moscow Metro is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, and one of the largest, with 269 stations and counting! Still, no one is immune from standing flummoxed in the middle of the platform not knowing whether to go left or right, or which of six or more exits to take to escape the subterranean maze. Our guide sheds light on some of the finer points, and will definitely make your life in the subway easier.

Floor stickers

These began to appear back in 2014, and are now visible at all the main interchange stations. Huge stickers with arrows on the floor show where you need to go to change line.

The lines are indicated by number and color, with the names written in Russian with English transliteration. For example, the number 7 in a purple circle means the Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya line; it is the purple line on the Metro map.

The Moscow Metro has over 20 different types of signs, which all complement each other. So if you look at one and are still confused, try looking at another.

Metro signs answer the key question: “Which way should I go?”, and usually show the end station of the line and/or the general direction (northbound, southbound, to the city center, etc.). Some overhead signs show only the line number and the end station; such a scheme is also used in the Paris Metro.

There are also signs on the platform walls, which tend to be more detailed. They tell you which direction the train is headed and which stations it will stop at. The station you are currently at is marked with a rectangle in the color of the line, and all others are listed in order from top to bottom.

All sign information is duplicated in English: names of Metro stations in lobbies, on platforms, and in rail cars are all shown in Latin script. Stations in rail cars are also announced in two languages, Russian and English. And ticket windows with English-speaking staff are marked with the sticker “We speak English!”.

How to find the right exit

Many stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations, Kitai Gorod, has no fewer than 15! But numbers, stands, and wall guides will help you out of the labyrinth without needing a ball of string.

Locals often use subway exits as geographical markers. For example, they might say “Let’s meet by the exit at Solyanka.” But for tourists this might not be very helpful. That said, maps showing the local area and main sights are available at exits (not all), or on round colorful stands in station lobbies and on platforms:

But since all exits are numbered, it’s best to be guided by the exit numbers.

There is often an overhead sign at exits listing the nearby sights, streets, shopping malls, and other reference points.

And on platform and lobby walls, you can see more stickers with bus, tram, and trolleybus numbers, showing the way to public transport stops.

Meeting place

The traditional meeting place in the Moscow Metro is v tsentre zala ("the platform center"). But recently, special stickers with the words Mesto vtrechi ("Meeting place") have appeared, making it easier to find one other.

Mobile apps

Some stations have a stand with a Metro map in the center of the platform and by the ticket windows in the lobby. But these days, the best way to navigate the branchy subway system is via a mobile app. Armed with one, you can work out the fastest route from A to B, calculate the journey time, see all available transfers and ground transport stops, and get notifications about temporary closures of stations and exits, etc.
