The five-paragraph essay is one of the most common composition assignments out there, whether for high school or college students. It is a classic assignment because it presents an arena in which writers can demonstrate their command of language and punctuation, as well as their logic and rhetorical skills. These skills are useful not only for classroom assignments and college application essays, but even in the business world, as employees have to write memorandums and reports, which draw on the same skills.

Mastering the five-paragraph essay is doable, and here are some tips.

Components of a Good Essay

The five-paragraph essay lives up to its name, because is has five paragraphs, as follows: an introductory paragraph that includes a thesis, three body paragraphs, each which includes support and development, and one concluding paragraph.

Its structure sometimes generates other names for the same essay, including three-tier essay, one-three-one, or a hamburger essay. Whether you are writing a cause-and-effect essay, a persuasive essay, an argumentative essay or a compare-and-contrast essay, you should use this same structure and the following specifics.

Keys to Introductory Paragraphs

Any introductory paragraph contains from three to five sentences and sets up the tone and structure for the whole essay. The first sentence should be a so-called hook sentence and grabs the reader. Examples of hook sentences include a quote, a joke, a rhetorical question or a shocking fact. This is the sentence that will keep your readers reading. Draw them in.

What Makes a Thesis Statement

The last sentence should be your thesis statement, which is the argument you are going to make in the essay. It is the sentence that contains the main point of the essay, or what you are trying to prove. It should be your strongest claim in the whole essay, telling the reader what the paper is about. You should be able to look back at it to keep your argument focused. The other sentences in this paragraph should be general information that links the first sentence and the thesis.

Content of Supporting Paragraphs

Each of the next three paragraphs follows the same general structure of the introductory paragraph. That is, they have one introduction sentence, evidence and arguments in three to five sentences, and a conclusion. Each one of them should define and defend your thesis sentence in the introduction.

The first body paragraph should be dedicated to proving your most powerful point. The second body paragraph can contain your weakest point, because the third body paragraph can, and should, support another strong argument.

Concluding Paragraph Tips

Your concluding paragraph is important, and can be difficult. Ideally, you can begin by restating your thesis. Then you can recall or restate all three to five of your supporting arguments. You should summarize each main point. If you have made similar arguments multiple times, join those together in one sentence.

Essentially, in the concluding or fifth paragraph, you should restate what your preceding paragraphs were about and draw a conclusion. It should answer the question: So what? Even if the answer seems obvious to you, write it down so that your reader can continue to easily follow your thinking process, and hopefully, agree with you.

A Note on Compare and Contrast

Let’s look a little more closely at the compare-and-contrast essay, which is a very common assignment. It can be a confusing one due to the terms used. Comparing two items is to show how they are alike. Contrasting two items is to show how they are different. One way to approach this essay is to make a grid for yourself that compares or contrasts two items before you start writing. Then, write about those characteristics. Do not try to write about both. The name of the essay is actually misleading.

Keep these pointers in mind when you need to write a five-paragraph essay, and your end result will be clear in its argument, leading your reader to the right conclusion. Often, that conclusion is to agree with you, and who doesn’t like to be right?

Also, I listen to all genres of music but Hindustani classical , semi-classical, Bollywood songs are my favorite. Melodious songs are close to my heart. I always participate in musical and cultural events organized in my school. I also take part in the inter-school competition and have been a winner at an inter-school competition a couple of times. Those are cherishable and proud moments of my life.

Every person is a mix of good and bad qualities. I am not an early riser by nature. I understand that waking up early is very important to become productive. Still, during my holidays I take the liberty of waking up late.

I am an ambitious person and a dreamer. My dream is to become a teacher. I think a teacher is a big motivator and guide. I would like to motivate people and guide them to do good for society.

Fourthly, the role that we all love is that of a friend. I have many friends. I love moving out and spending time with my friends. We help each other in times of need. We live happy moments together. Friendship is very beautiful. I love to make my friends feel special, and never miss wishing them on their birthdays.

Conclusion             

Life is full of experiences. Every moment we meet different people and face different situations. In this course of life, we not only get to know different people, but we also get to know ourselves in different ways.

As we grow, our likes dislike interest changes. Our perception and outlook toward life also change with time and experience. Thus, the search to the answer to the question of who I am is a lifelong process.

Not worth it

All I wanted to do was get the answer to test questions and your only allowed to have a limited amount of answers and when those are all gone they try to make you pay for more answers which is completely ridiculous. I understand they have to find a way to make money but there are so many other ways they could have done so it’s annoying and not worth it. When they advertise they say “oh sign up to see answers so you sign up”. then you only have about 5 answers that you can see without it saying you have to pay X amount of money a month which is completely stupid to me and pointless. Don't download the app it will save you your disappointment. Apple or google play get this app off the App Store and replace it with an actually useful app. Oh yeah not to mention when I did TRY to pay for Brainly plus by putting in my credit card info and stuff when I pressed proceed to payment it didn’t even give me Brainly plus. I still couldn’t see the answers and I tried to refresh and that still didn’t work. Not worth it like i said don’t download or buy from them they are worthless and trying to scam you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ads loading forever and not showing up at all...

The app it’s self is really good and very helpful and I appreciate it very much but, Recently for the past 3 days whenever I’ve went into the app and had to watch an ad as usual, it would load for very a long time and never show up in the end no matter how long I waited. I even tried many things to see what the problem was. My connection was fine and I’ve tried to refresh, turn off or shut off my phone, logging in out logging back in, deleting the app and re-installing, and offloading the app. But with all the efforts I put in to make it work it never did. So I decided to go on the website instead and it worked perfectly fine the ads did show up and let me play them. So the problem seemed to be the app it’s self, but the only thing that is inconvenient about going to the website instead of the app, is it only gives me a limited amount of ads I can watch to get answers in a day. I’m not sure if I’m The only one with this problem but I believe since a couple days have passed this seem to be a really worrisome for me and difficult since I really like the app in general. So therefore, I would like to see and know if there’s anything I’m doing wrong or something that I need to do to make it work. Please and thank you for your value time.

Mainly questions...

This app is amazing! A total life saver! I would 100% recommended this to anyone. But two questions. One, when I have a notification for things I go to my profile to look at the notifications and every time i click on it, it seems to say something like, “Oops, something went wrong. Try again,” but I refresh, restart my phone and it won’t fix it. Two, when I answer a question sometimes I need to ask them a question back first before answering, like what kind of math is this or something to clear something up, but once I answer something once I cant answer it again, maybe you can on a computer, but not on phone, so maybe you can make it so you can answer it twice. And I would like to suggest that when you click on the answers that you or someone else had answered on a subject like on their profile, it could show the answers you or they have answered. Thanks, and please get this seen!
