My Love of Food
I love food and love eating it, who doesn’t? When I am enjoying a meal I am thinking about the next one. I don’t know why but one of my favorite things to do is eating out. I have a passion for food and want to be a cook when I grow up. My inspiration is definitely my grandma taking me out to eat and letting me help her cook on holidays. When I am cooking food over the stove I love the smell of it rising into my nose. Fortunately there have been no incidents yet while I cook, because I am an amateur cook. I wasn’t really thinking about becoming a cook until one night I knew I had a passion for it. My family and I went to a restaurant in Oakdale called Maninios. It was my first time going there and now it’s my favorite restaurant. I had two giant chicken breasts stuffed with spinach and sundried tomatoes on top of their signature pink sauce, it was indescribable. My mom and I tried to re-create the dish and I think it turned out even better. We also stuffed mozzarella cheese into it. Some of the real chefs that inspired me would be Gordon Ramsey, Mario Batali and Guy Fieri. I watch their TV shows all the time. They usually cook dishes that they make up or compete with other chefs to see who the better chef is. I have a couple of their cook books too. I don’t know how to explain it but my world, revolves around food

In order to perform well in life, our body needs energy. We get this energy from the food we eat. Without food, there will be no life. In today’s world, there are so many dishes available worldwide. Food comes in a wide variety all around the world. Dosa, Paneer, Naan, Chapati, Biryani, and more Indian delicacies are available. We are also offered western cuisines such as noodles, pasta, burgers, fries, pizzas and more dominating the food industry. In my favourite food essay, I will tell you about the food I like eating the most.
My Favorite Food
As the world is advancing day by day, it is becoming easier to get access to many kinds of food at our doorstep. Every day, we all want to consume great and delicious cuisine. There are many different varieties of food accessible all throughout the world. We all like different foods, however, my personal favourite is burgers. I have eaten many cuisines but my favourite food is definitely a burger. I cannot resist myself when it comes to burgers.
Burgers are one of the most convenient and easiest foods to eat on the fly when we’re in a hurry. We can have a burger at any time of day, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or supper, and maybe some fries and a Coke to go with it. Many restaurants are well-known for making their speciality burgers in a particular style. Preparation changes from one establishment to the next. But what exactly makes a burger taste so good? They will taste vary depending on where you go, but they are all built the same. It is made up of a bun, a ground meat patty, and various toppings like cheese, onion slices, lettuce, and other sauces.
They are so soft yet crunchy, fresh and juicy that I love eating them. Even though there are many kinds of burgers, my favourite one is a chicken burger. The chicken patty gives the burger a juicy taste and it tingles my taste buds every time I eat it. I can already smell and taste it in my mouth as soon as I walked inside McDonald’s or any other restaurant that serves chicken burgers. As soon as I take a huge mouthful of it, I forget about any problems or troubles that are going on in the outer world and concentrate my entire concentration just on my chicken burger.
I love eating a burger which is filled with cheese and vegetables . The more vegetables you add, the better it tastes. My personal favourite is lettuce. It gives the burger the right amount of freshness and crunchiness.
I always eat my burger with ketchup. Most importantly, the thing I love about eating burgers is that I get to eat French fries along with them. They work as a great side to the dish and also make my stomach full.
Even though I liked eating a burger from a famous fast food joint, nothing beats the chicken burger my mother makes at home. She prepares everything from scratch, even the burger. Thus, it is extremely fresh and healthy too.
I know and feel that burgers have the great flavour and taste that would make anyone’s stomach pleased after a long day of work. I can tell by the reactions on people’s faces when they order their preferred burger variant. Overall, I don’t believe any other fast food will taste as good as a chicken burger. It’s just difficult to think that something will triumph in the future. As a result, I consider my favourite dish to be the best ever created.
A Great Variety
Perhaps the great thing about burgers is the great variety they offer. It has options for all people, who prefer vegetarian, non-vegetarian and even vegans. Thus, you can select the patty of your burger and dive right in.
There are a large number of burger joints being started in every corner of the city, each serving a variety of their own specialised and self-curated recipes. Burgers that are health-friendly and a go-to with a diet are also being introduced by these newly upcoming burger places. There are a lot many burger cafes that give their customers the choice to create their own burgers by providing them with a choice between patties, fillings, veggies, sauces as well as the number of burger layers they want.
Even though my personal favourite is a chicken burger, I also enjoy eating cheeseburgers and vegetable burgers. For me, all burgers taste delicious. Whenever we go out to eat with friends , I always order a burger.
My friends who do not eat non-vegetarian also eat burgers thanks to the great variety it offers. When we order food at home, we make sure to offer all kinds of burgers from cheeseburgers to chicken burgers, so that we get a taste of everything in our meal. Thus, I love burgers and their great variety makes it better.

Food, A Love Language

Cherished family memories ground and bond us, enriching our lives in ways nothing else can. When difficulties and myriad choices like roadblocks arise, we can remind ourselves we’re not alone, gaining strength to navigate the path forward. I am a Lebanese Southern American woman. Food was the glue of our family and my port of call in an often tumultuous and disappointing world.
My earliest memories are in the kitchen on Sunday mornings standing on a stool next to my Lebanese grandfather helping prepare the traditional foods we loved. The aroma of garlic and onions warmed the kitchen; my brother and I bounced like restless racehorses at the gate, waiting for Kibbeh Nayeh. Old pictures show us sitting in our highchairs with o eager mouths open, as our grandfather pushed in little bites of ground lamb kneaded into bulgur wheat, shaped into a large oval shape on a platter like the king it was. Olive oil drizzled like ribbons of velvet lay nestled among quartered white onions, Kalamata olives, and pita bread specially made by the butcher’s wife.
Kibbeh Nayeh was the dish that bonded me to my Jidu (Arabic for Grandfather), in a special way. My grandmother never liked the texture of it no matter how many times she tried; she said it reminded her of the farm, a life she didn’t want to remember. My brother and I happily pressed close on either side of him stuffed it in as fast as we could, and then smelled so strongly of garlic and onions, no one wanted to come near. But we couldn’t have cared less, we had him all to ourselves even if only around the table for one day of the week. My grandfather was generous, fiercely protective of us, and always wearing his beloved Brut Cologne. We knew that we were loved. Love that laid the foundation for me to step out into the world and chart my course.
When I went away to college, my grandfather packed lunch with my beloved Kibbeh wrapped in pita bread (no onion), and told me to hit the road, wipe those tears off my eyes, and go make friends and enjoy my life. He’d be waiting for me with the table set for two.
When he died after I graduated, I was lost, where was my cheerleader, my best fan? I wandered around town for several days, winding up at the butcher’s shop, drinking Turkish coffee, and listening to him and his wife fighting in Arabic about who was going to do this or that. It filled my empty heart.
On those Sunday afternoons, the party began when his brothers, sister, and my cousins descended upon the house, everyone speaking Arabic energetically. My very southern grandmother escaping to the sunroom, the chaos and the Middle Eastern music she hated that sounded like nails on a chalkboard or sobbing depending on how you were feeling that day. I loved it. I learned how to make a great scotch and water, a high ball in those days, and served it round the table to my animated relatives smoking endless Pall Malls, discussing some wayward relative in the Old Country, or politics here and there.
My grandfather was the patriarch of our family, coming over from Lebanon to New York in 1914 at the age of fourteen, alone, to make his fortune importing Turkish and Persian rugs sold to the finest families across the North and South. After his business became prosperous, he moved his four brothers and three sisters to America. Later, leaving one brother and sister to run the store, he led the family to Texas, stopping in Virginia to drop off rugs already ordered, staying just long enough to find his blue-eyed red headed wife.
The story goes, he and one of his brothers were introduced to two young women while dining with clients. He took one look at her, and it was love at first sight. He wooed her with fine dinners and dancing, all the while painting a picture of a lavish life in the bustling city of Dallas. The third night he closed the deal, took her to her parents to pack, bade farewell, and never looked back. She, soft spoken and only eighteen compared to his dashing thirty-one. They remained married fifty years, raising two daughters, one with severe disabilities. He traveled a lot selling rugs, but when he was home, the music and food of the Middle East were the parenthesis that kept us together.
Early every Sunday without fail, my mother brought my brother and me to their house, something that we looked forward to all week. Like rambunctious puppies, we tumbled up white steps onto a wide veranda surrounded by ferns and Adirondack chairs with sunny yellow cushions, the opposite to the mysteries of our homeland. Though we’d never been, but had in the many stories told and in our dreams.
I learned to make Kibbeh, cooked and raw; Lahm Bi Ajin, Tabbouli, Falafel, Stuffed Kousa, and my mother’s favorite Malfouf Mahshi, stuffed cabbage because she said she wouldn’t gain any weight, but did anyways because bread was her downfall. When the ink of night closed the curtain over day my grandfather sent us home with the cooked Kibbeh for Monday’s dinner. I went to bed late on those nights falling asleep to visions of red horses galloping through the streets of Beirut. I was cocooned in silken threads of another era, brought to life every Sunday in my grandfather’s kitchen.
I stood on a stool by the kitchen counter while Jidu taught me how to roll, stuff, and cook our weekly menu. Sitting to the right of him at the table, the feast began and so did the spirited conversations on who made the best Kibbeh. My grandfather called my aunt, Alice, cheap for using beef instead of lamb then it was on - who was the best at this and that dish, cigarette smoke so thick a candle couldn’t penetrate the haze, my brother and I smiling ear to ear. It was wonderful; we were safe in the sameness of it all, the stability, the path to adulthood. Though there were heated arguments, we knew nothing would divide us. My grandmother Gami (she refused to be called Situ) learned to like some of the food, none of the music, and a couple of relatives, though my Aunt Nezlah would debate that.
This was our world sewn into the fabric of being an American in the 60s, where our mixed heritage caused some to whisper while in the grocery store or church. But we learned to pay no attention, we shared the rhythm of family that nourished our souls and bodies. Sundays, the bedrock of my imagination.
The traditions of my Lebanese grandfather combined with the roots of my gentle southern grandmother make me the strong woman I am today. Though our Sunday dinners died with their generation, my grandparents’ resolute vow to their marriage and our family is the anchor of my present. Their ongoing grief raising a child with disabilities taught me to stand strong in the face of unimaginable pain – the death of a son.
I carry the hills and valleys and sea of Lebanon in my DNA; the food of love fills and sustains me. The geography of the past and present, for me, is boundary-less.
Sunset, palm trees, and chicken on the grill - these three ingredients should have made for a perfect evening.
That hot June night, my mother made me ride with her in the dark blue Dodge out to Route 38, what we thought of as “the highway.”

I could say Italians are real food-lovers and so they raise their own crops, choosing the ones which are most important in their cooking. Early in my life, I have learned to indulge in home-grown foods. The words, “Home-grown vegetables are the most delicious in the world”, have become a cliche for me because they were my grandmother’s daily verse. As a result, I have grown to consider home-grown vegetables as the very heart of every meal. I do not consider eating as a lively activity when there is no green thing on the table.
Without the colorful vegetables that make the poultry attractive, the blood in my home-grown relationship with food is quite drained. I guess I could say that my romance with food is like tomatoes. It is very attractive. With the red color, it expresses its passion for me as much as I do for it. It is as juicy as my early romance with food in my hometown in Italy. For the first seven years in my life, I have smelled and appreciated food even before I knew anything about it. It did not simply sustain me to live and be healthy.
Rather, food gave meaning to my life. I could say that just like the tomatoes, my first seven years of romance with food has been the juicy stuff. I remember my grandmother excitedly gathering her homegrown vegetables and gleefully bring them to the kitchen for our consumption. I can see the males preparing the meat to mate with the vegetables to eventually give birth to a delectable victual. Then, the whole family sit together to eat, giving the children the priority to indulge first with the food before the grown-ups pick on our morsels.
The whole family was engaged in the preparation and consumption of the food and I think that is what makes my love affair with food quite juicy. It has been a homegrown relationship, strengthened by the people around me and, which was nurtured into a love that is to make my life more colorful and meaningful. When my family moved to California, my homegrown romance did not die. Although we did not grow our own vegetables, mother always made sure that we still have the lingering taste of grandmother’s homegrown vegetables.
Local fresh foods were always made available for us. My mother always made it a point that we prepare our food and that we all eat together at home because she knew that going out to eat in restaurants, especially fast food restaurants, would spoil our love affair with healthy food. I see this time in my life as a carrot. It still looks attractive and healthy although the chewing gets a little difficult. This period brought us challenges that eventually affected me. My mother really had to work hard to keep our kitchen a place where we could still indulge with food and see each other.
With the demands of a busy American lifestyle and the inability to grow our own vegetables, preparing food has been quite a feat. Nevertheless, my mother did not give up rather she kept my romance with food aflame by teaching me how to cook even though we had to get by with vegetables from the fresh market which are locally produced. When organic vegetables became popular, I could say that my relationship with food became more interesting. I did not have to worry about the source of the food that I eat rather I was confident and felt like I was with my grandmother once again.

Yes.. I’m in love! Deep, untamed, uninhibited love that runs deep in my veins – and stomach for that matter.
I love everything about Food: the fragrant, irresistible smell; the amazing, original colors and the rich, overwhelming tastes.
My love for food is not only about eating .. I enjoy cooking -a lot. I love to innovate but mostly I try to learn all the secrets and tricks from a most amazing teacher, Nana (my mom). I have a theory about food, a theory that all my family shares: “the most important ingredient for any food is love”. This is probably why I do not enjoy food in restaurants. It is impersonal- cold.
I know my passion for food is so obvious, it sometimes embarrasses me. This is why- again- I hate eating in public. I feel like everyone is watching me and I cannot be comforted by Food.
Food is always tempting, always! No time limit, no place, nothing can stand in the way of tasting and getting my fill of my favorite food.
Food is always benevolent: no matter what mood I’m in, no matter how upset, happy, depressed or enthusiastic, I can always count on food to cheer me up or celebrate with me..
Food is always missed: when the time comes, nothing can replace it or sooth the craving…
I know most people consider Food as secondary to happiness- not me! I think being happy is getting your fill of favorite food in the company of your favorite people. Nothing can beat that, NOTHING!
These days, we hear about the famine happening in Somalia and I believe no one feels their ordeal more than I do!I grieve for them all the time, mention them in every prayer and try to help as much as I can. They know, better than anyone, the importance of food.
I guess it can never be compared to Somalians, but you can better understand how Ramadan is a difficult month for me. long hours of deprivation and longing… Exhausting!! Yet, the promised Heaven is a great motive 🙂
